Thank you Dr Novak for creating all these content to explain the concepts behind anoxic filtration. I sat here watching hours of your videos wondering about how to get rid of the green algae on my fish tank, when it dawned upon me that I used to have a whole infestation of black beard algae and it was all gone in the past month. In my little Tidal 35 hang on back filter, I suspect I've overloaded it with media and neglected it to the point where the flow is so slow, it has turned anoxic and started reducing phosphate levels. Somehow my laziness and created a partial solution to my problem. It is good to understand what has happened nonetheless. I'll be getting a Hana meter to check my phosphate levels. I'll also be adding a BCB bag to my newly bought Oase Filto 200 for my 25ga tank. I'll probably start a new system with a plenum to test out some ideas soon.
With regards to the BCB bag, it is not easy to find hard kitty litter in Singapore. I happen to have a huge (1 ton) stash of green zeolite 1-3mm. Do you think I can use that with laterite to create a BCB bag? Or is the particle size too big/the material unsuitable to do so?
    Thanks in advance!

I mentioned my plenum setup in a group on Facebook, and a guy got pretty salty about it 😂, my tank has been set up for over a month and so far so good thanks for sharing. 👍

You must remember when people get pretty salty about it it's because they themselves can't do any better, they themselves can't invent anything better, they themselves are too scared to try anything new in their life so therefore they repetitively do the same things over and over again whether it's successful or not.
“If you have never failed, you never tried anything new”. Einstein
In other words, everybody has become an expert that otherwise would never be recognized as an expert in anything. The Internet has given them absolute power over everything that they say as being true and factual and they like that. The thing you need to do is challenge them and bring them to their own turf. Ask them/him and/or her where is the scientific proof of the system that they advocate. Where is the literature written in books that actually show scientific test results from universities or anything else that is out there that can be substantiate what they are saying is absolute science. Expect to hear crickets.

@@anoxicfiltrationplenums Haha you are right, their backup is "years of experience" 😂 and that for me that's kinda like "trust me bro" but what works for yourself doesn't necessarily means that could work for everyone, in my personal case I am doing it because I like the whole concept and since I am having fun doing it, I don't really care too much about others opinions.

That’s one great thing about utube, the information available now. Now i few of us have given the anoxic system and realize the benefits of it more people are able to share their experiences with it . 👍🏼 love your work 😉

Listened to your previous video. Been running my new set up for 4 months. Glad to hear ,that over time the BCP bags in the cannister filter, will age into lower nitrates.

Hello, thanks again for your content its great, I want to setup an aquarium in a couple of months, my question is, if there is a way to start ahead with the bcb basckets and activate them beforehand or at least save some time and how can we keep them in working or alive if for some reason they are not in an aquarium or a pond. Maybe its a silly question but I was thinking about that; since as far as I understand it takes a long time to have them working in order to take advantage of the anoxic filtration. I am also happy that more and more people are into anoxic filtration and want to be one of them!

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  2 роки тому +1

Some people like I have done will make up the baskets ahead of time and if you want you can add a bottle of like API aquarium starter to a bucket of water and place to be should be baskets inside of that. Another thing they may do is if they have a sump put some in a sump and then when they make the new aquarium just move them out of the sump into the new aquarium.

I have a question: can I use a black sponge filter material instead of using gravel on a gravel filter.

I guess my final concern before I do a bcb is how much is enough on a heavily stocked tank or light stocked. Planted tank or cichlid tank you know like experiments already done.
Like "you need this much for 200 liter or this much bcb volume for a 500 liter tank"
Im definetly a fan of biohome already but bcb sounds like a killer idea for a pond

The plenem and BCBS are really the only way worth doing yes it easy to just add gravel to a tank and use normal media in a filter but what's the point in doing that ur gonna get issues and fish dieing algae ect I only ever set my tanks with plenems or BCBS or both apart from one nano tank I'm running with no substrate just bear glass at bottem and a hob with 300grams of biohome biogravel media to see if that'll give me the full cycle turning the nitrates to n2 gas n out the surface of tank and so far so good nitrates are 5ppm they should go down to zero over time iv put a wild Cott stickle back fish in there I'm gan to keep it for a week then put Bk into river

I know it wasn't the point of the video, necessarily, but it's great to know that when you're trying out different filtration setups, that there's such neat devices, like those Hanna testers! I've never even seen those, and I've certainly shaken the API tests, to the point I thought my arm would fall off, after I got to the 3rd tank! So, thanks for the helpful info there, for sure! 😄

Thanks for the video. It is a honest video showing the 10ppm nitrates level. It is an acceptable but can be better as you said.
I also like the clarification that there are two denitrification processes by bacteria, one that can survive with very low dissolved oxygen levels and the other in complete zero oxygen levels.

Hanna NO3 is not suitable for fresh water . It gives bad results . I asked about it in Hanna company . Please change the way of measuring NO3 .

OK, a few people have said this and I will repeat to you what I told them. I have doubled and triple tested the test results coming from the Hanna test kits to the API and one of the best test kits out there that is used professionally a LoMotte and they all came out the same. End of story. Hobbyist really don't need to use a professional kit like a LoMotte to test their aquarium water. However, that test kit being a professional test kit showing the same as the Hanna test kit tells us that for the sake of us hobbiest it's good enough for what we want to use it for.
Since I have done triple blind test with all three test kits, and they all came out the same don't tell me change the way I measure NO3, if you want to believe the manufacture knock your socks off. In fact, why don't you prove me wrong and buy all three test kits, and test it out yourself. Instead of telling me, I'm wrong with no verification of what you were saying, except the manufacturer who just wants to sell you more products. By the way, the API test kit test for both fresh and saltwater with the same kit.
