S.F. Skater Faces Long Recovery After Crash Near Dolores Park

- A well-known San Francisco skateboarder remains in the hospital Friday night after a daredevil stunt near Dolores Park last week went horribly wrong. Andria Borba reports. (7-19-19)
If anyone sees this & is wondering how shes doing now, shes mostly recovered, still skating, and running a skate shop in SF called Tomo Skate Co.:)

I play airsoft, and the first game i played after getting a helmet was the day that i fell from a staircase and hit the back of my head in a wall. My head was intact, but my foot was fucked... 1 year of recover...3 months without touching the floor... I did skate back in the day, and never used helmets, but i wasn't going down hill too... this is really dangerous

I don’t think I would bomb a hill with wheels nothing less than 70mm. With larger size wheels you can get away with tiny rocks or uneven road. I use 80mm Kagels by the way.
Helmets people! I bike in SF all the time and a helmet saved me a couple times from having a $50K gofundme for my recovery. I will rather donate for children cancer.

@@heyitsnasira Basic science, helmets protect your skull not your brain from impact. At these speed hitting your head even with a helmet is pretty devastating because the helmet doesn't stop your brain from crashing into your skull.

Skateboarding is just like boxing, you will get hurtz you most definitely will face times in which you'll get really hurt, and you need to have in your mind the knowledge thst you can die doing it.
The best piece of advice I had is don't do it if you don't feel comfortable enough, breaking out of fear is one thing, not being comfortable is another. Be safe you guys, and I hope she gets a nice recovery.
I've been skating for most of my life and I only wear helmets in 2 occasions: 1) bowls or halfpipes that are 6 foot or higher 2) bombing hills.
Many skaters think they are too rad to wear a helmet or taking the risk is what makes it exciting. Well no thanks. I saw a friend of mine completely destroying his skull because he bailed a bs 360 in a bowl (trick that he had 9/10 tries) he hit the back of his head on the concrete and then hit his face as well and for the most part of 6 months he sat in bed looking like a picasso with bandages all over his head. Nope. I will pass on that "thrill", I'm not "rad" enough to risk brain damage like that XD
It could have been prevented if she had worn a helmet, but a lot of the comments here show absolutely no sensitivity. Be more human people.

I had a concusion so bad from playing ice hockey when i was a kid. I literally felt like i was drunk or something for two days. And i was wearing a helmet. Couldnt imagine what would of happened if i wasnt wearing one.
Skaters need to be smart at at least wear helmets at these events. It's one person after another falling and hitting their heads multiple times.

Don't think the answer is helmets, the answer is to think smart and don't bomb hills at speeds where you're out of control. I like the hill Dolores hill bomb is cool but its not worth the risk. Seen too many skaters die over it.

Most of skateboarding does not involve riding your board down the side of a small mountain. That is a whole other level of dangerous, even though I don't wear a helmet when I skate, if I was going to do something like this, I absolutely would wear a helmet, although to be honest they don't necessarily protect you all that well but they are better than nothing. It should be noted that helmets do absolutely nothing to prevent concussions, only skull fractures, and even fractures there's debate about how much they actually help. Tony Hawk has knocked himself out multiple times while wearing a helmet

If a helmet seems impossible use wrist protection so if you go down that palm protection can keep your head off the pavement. Not as good as a helmet but a million times better than nothing. And so easy to wear.

I can remember being a crazed 10 year old in 1972 wiping out on a homemade "coaster" on Dolores Park's side of that hill. Back then the craziest thing we did was hop on the back edge of moving J Church street cars and ride to Noe Valley.
Pads and helmet are the way to go y'all. I shattered my elbow just skating to work once lol. Got a plate and some screws now but I still skate. Just wear protection

Once again, wear a helmet!!! This stigmatization of helmets in the skate scene really needs to stop, especially when doing shit like hill bombs. She could have potentially saved herself from brain injury if she was wearing one. I'm not saying I judge her or anything, but people need to wear helmets more!

Everyone saying to wear a helmet; really? Don’t you think they know that. They chose to not wear one. And they will continue to do so. It’s their life. People die in car crashes with seat belts on, people drown in water swimming. Shit happens. They choose to take that risk.
