I get a bigger kick out of seeing artists working than looking at the pictures themselves.
Because you could imagine taking any story or idea and make it tangible. Take Disney for example, Ted uses it as a slight towards the Hildebrandt brothers. But there's no reason you couldn't take something childish and mature it. Disney's Pocahontas, Disney's Hercules, Disney's Aladdin rendered by Alan lee And Ted Nasmith. The idea that anything can be elevated and that illustration is the easiest way to make it obvious something has matured. Very inspirational.

Mr. Nesmith wrote back to me once as I praised his work. I wanted to buy something but the time got away grom me. He was so sweet to take the time. I see now why; he is a dedicated knower of the lore. I don't say fan for "fan" doesn't hit precisely. Might I say though that THE HOBBIT is a children's book and it's only fitting that Ted Nesmith's art should reflect the Hobbits as child-like in appearance and personality though not in character. Only children can be trusted to take on tasks to appease, earnestly, their "adults", and to not be spoiled by the presence of evil. They simply don't understand and have no experience with it. Like Tom Bombadil was not concerned nor effected by evil, albeit for different reasons.
I think Ted Nesmith got it right first off. The other artist took hold of the image of Hobbits after they were consumed by adults.

Short story... I had all three Hildebrand Brothers calendars in my shed. They were left by the previous owners of the home. I was unaware of them for years when we finally cleaned it out. My husband threw them in a drawer under a window. I never thought about it. The divorce came, the shed went unused, the window got broken, the rains came in repeatedly. 20 years later I went to sift through the old place. They were still there but so completely destroyed by mold and mildew, fading and warping. I threw them out in disgust. I remember when they were pretty. Oh, the mistakes I've made.
