Adding to what you said, when Yitzhak Rabin later became prime minister of Israel, he worked hard with the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization Yasser Arafat on a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine known as the Oslo Accords, and those talks started with Palestine renouncing any militancy against Israel, and to end and ensure that no further militant actions against Israel to happen, and Israeli recognition of the PLO as a legitimate authority of the Palestinian people, along with agreeing to continue a more indepth negotiation. The peace talks then proceeded along fairly well between the two, and they were pretty close to completing them, until one day a Far-right ultranationalist Jewish extremist assassinated Rabin because he believed that Rabin was a traitor to the Jewish people, and a Traitor to Israel for even recognizing the Palestinian people, wanting to remove Jews who forcefully removed Palestinians from their homes and then claiming them, and allowing the Palestinians to have a recognized and sovereign land of their own.

So they grabbed a lot of hostages instead of 20 they got 100. Most of the shootouts were IDF soldiers reacting to Hamas and shooting back. They wanted to get hostages and say we don't have any more war or mistreatment of the Palestinian people and we want a peaceful solution and 2 state solution. The peace talks then proceeded along fairly well between the two, and they were pretty close to completing them, until one day a Far-right ultranationalist Jewish extremist assassinated Rabin because he believed that Rabin was a traitor to the Jewish people, and a Traitor to Israel for even recognizing the Palestinian people, wanting to remove Jews who forcefully removed Palestinians from their homes and then claiming them, and allowing the Palestinians to have a recognized and sovereign land of their own.

The "Palestinian" right of return meant the elimination of Israel with the influx of over 5 million Arabs from around the globe, anyone related to the 700K who had left Israel in 1948 at the outset of the war they waged and lost-- most left at the urging of the invading Arab armies to make the slaughter of Jews easier. The "release of prisoners" meant terrorists with blood on their hands responsible for countless Israeli lives.
