LAUGHLIN: The Hottest City In America - Why Do People Live Here?

  • I visited the Hottest City in the United States, chatted with some locals & tourists, and drove across the newly opened Silver Copper Crossing. (The 2nd bridge connecting Laughlin, Nevada & Bullhead City, Arizona)
Laughlin at the southern tip of Nevada is a beautiful resort city on the Colorado River. It also recorded the 3rd highest temperature of any state at 125°F on July 29, 1994. And its average July high of 119°F is tied for the Hottest City in the USA!
What is life really like in the Mohave Valley? Why is it one of the poorest regions of the country with many meth heads and abandoned trailer parks? Join me on this epic road trip to find out.

Great video! You pretty much got it all!!
Regarding your statement about the average income here in Laughlin, keep in mind that this is a retirement community, and a huge percentage of residents live off capital gains and investments they've compiled their entire life which is not reported as income.
When you made your point about all the land and didn't understand why there wasn't more development.............First, thank goodness there is not!!! We love our small town with no traffic!! But the reason for it is that we currently have in place a building moratorium due to the limited water storage. We have plenty of water, but in order to build more homes there is a requirement for more storage capacity. Nobody wants to pay for it. I'm sure one day when the home prices get high enough and the numbers make sense, some developer will be happy to pay for the construction of that storage.
There is an area outside of Kingman of abandoned "mansions" that might make a great video. It was an upscale development which collapsed during the real estate crash around 2008. The developers just walked away and left it all empty. Most of it is still standing.

@@FromHeretoThere Wait, is he saying that capital gains are not reported as income in the studies from which you got your median income figures? That would be odd, because capital gains are certainly counted as income by the IRS. Luckily for retirees, long term capital gains are taxed at a lower rate, but they're certainly counted as income. As are the dividends and interest from their investments.

    • @mathematrucker
      @mathematrucker 20 днів тому +8

@Frank-James geezerpleasers_OG is right about income being taxable in general. I think the main reasons Laughlin has a below-average median income are its affordability for middle- and lower-income retirees and the fact that most casino jobs don't pay all that well.

Laughlin, NV is actually my hometown, I'm proud to say. My dad was the GM of the Edgewater around the time i was born and helped build the Colorado Belle (Save Colorado Belle). It has some things that could absolutely be improved, and yes, it's so ridiculously hot, as soon as you walk outside, it feels like your eyeballs are going to melt, but i truly love this town, and the river and have a lot of great memories. I lived in Oatman in the 90s. Generally about 5 degrees cooler than along the river, for what that's worth! Don Laughlin, who we all called Uncle Don, was a true gentleman, he used to fly his helicopter up to Oatman once in a while, just because he liked to hang out there, with all us "little people", always very friendly and a pleasure to visit with. He was a real class act.

When the Mohave Power Plant was under construction in the 1960's the project brought in many well-paid contractors and upon completion a large well-paid permanent crew with families. Over the years the permanent work force and ongoing contractor support caused the population and economy in the area to expand rapidly. Eventually the town turned into a tourist destination with the building of more attractions. Prior to the power plant being built Laughlin and Bullhead City was one of many small fishing camps along the Colorado River. Now the power plant is gone due to environmental issues and potential cancellation of water contracts to use river water. However the area grew enough to support itself with out the Power Plant.

@From Here To There - Wow! - Excellent and accurate Nevada vlog...A friend of mine used to drive a water taxi for 10 years..he loved living there. Thanks for keeping it real... We are in Reno , Nevada - also a beautiful Nevada city, with a great river, The Truckee..Reno is in the High Sierra foothills..Reno is about 500 miles from Laughlin..One side note - The Aquarius was the Flamingo Laughlin. In Reno, at the Circus-Circus Reno, for years we used to have a Friday horse racing contest, competing with the race horse players at the Flamingo Laughlin. We used to have a great time, we won both good prizes, and cash. We have actually bought several great vintage Flamingo Laughlin bright teal satin jackets on Ebay....

Ran across your video, thoroughly enjoyed it!
Laughlin is a must stop on our way to Quartzsite AZ every January since 2009, except for 2021. Travel by RV, though not officially Snowbirds, we're from NorCal.
Laughlin used to have alot more free or low fee dry camping areas, like the 2 tier parking directly across the Laughlin River Lodge. Now that was a beautiful view! Used to be River Palms Resort, and when they changed owners, the area was closed to any vehicle or RV parking due to insurance liability reasons, so we were told. There were good priced buffets in every casino. Locals would flood them due to coupons they had access to for being locals! Laughlin was pretty hopping back then. We thought of it as a slower paced Vegas. Most of their headliner shows were scheduled for Spring. Harrah's had dry camping in the lot next to the Shell Station/Convenience Store. They had a water/sewer station, sold propane and diesel. Sadly, it all closed after Covid as did most of the buffets.
No matter, we still love Laughlin. We ride our bikes along the trail all the way to the dam, Pioneer has free dry camping; but if its a cold year, like the last 2, we book a few nights at Riverside RV Park for the electricity! We frequent the fast foods, Walmarts and other shopping in BHC, but the best thing is the diesel prices are, like, $1.00 or more less than when we left home, so it's always a fill up stop as well.
One thing we enjoyed about the video is seeing how nice the water looks during this summer, it's way too hot for us!
    Good job !👍

Arguably the best Laughlin/ BHC video there is! My family watched it from the area, which made it even better. Your optimism and enthusiasm about the area made us all smile, because you were so complimentary. Around a decade ago, my parents bought a house in Laughlin Ranch as a vacation house, and they’ve since moved here because they love it so much. It’s a gated community with views of the Colorado River and casinos. You’ll have to check out the golf course and clubhouse area next time you’re here:) Laughlin has been called “Mini Las Vegas,” but as a longtime Orange County resident, there are many Californians who prefer it over LV any day. There’s also the IFP airport (literally stands for International Fun Place), that has random domestic flights from snowbird-centric locations. It’s awesome. Thanks for posting this amazing video; I just subscribed and I’m looking forward to watching your future videos! 🥳🎉🤩

We and all my friends and my parents were there and I was so surprised to see everyone. We went to Calico Ghost Town which was nice and saw the London Bridge.

Wife and I stayed in Laughlin about 2017, it was quite hot!
Took the boat tour to the dam and back. Went to the rock drawings.
Quaint area, not busy and relaxing atmosphere.
Never did venture across the bridge though🤷🏼

Great video. I have been to Laughlin many times, love the river, Lake Mohave and Lake Havasu in fact I am probably going to retire nearby in Arizona. My friends and I have stayed at Laughlins Riverside Casino many times and met Don Laughlin on a number of ocassions as he walked through his casino, he was a very nice person. Laughlin does attract an older crowd, but I think it also attracts a crowd of younger people who want to party and have their dollar go farther. I have a lot of great memories boating up and down the river or at Lake Mohave, gambling at the casinos, then partying in my hotel room later. Way more fun then burning through money in Las Vegas.

Dude, the heat in Las Vegas must really suck. No doubt whatsoever it’s insanely hot way out there. By the way, the hottest temperature on Earth, I once heard, was 134 degrees Fahrenheit in Death Valley, which was way back in 1913.

Very nice. That little road you saw at 26:26 just before going over the new bridge is Laughlin Highway Road (might be a different name). On weekends, there are 100s of cars mostly Californians going to Laughlin. You only showed one car. Also, before 1988 or 1987 you had to drive all the way over the dam and around to get to Bullhead. It was a 15-16 mile drive but it was the only way to get there. I started going there in 1979 and stayed at Kathryn campground.

Very interesting and well done! Glad that you had stats on the area and interviewed some folks. A concern that I would have about this area, or any desert area such as the Palm Springs area, is that since temps are clearly rising yearly at this point in time they could become practically unlivable in a few years. That said, I am still considering the Palm Springs area, or some of the more affordable nearby towns, for retirement in a few years.

Up off the parkway in bullhead City is the nicer homes..
Originally, bullhead was a fishing city along with mines so the lower bend is more a mix of new construction along with trailer homes.
Maybe even homes up off of 68..
I will say some of the vacant land down by the new bridge in laughlin is a alot of native land. Down in nevada across from ft mohave is an Indian casino. Called Avi

@FromHeretoThere Great video! A couple things you missed though. You missed goat island at the taxi stop across from Riverside/Aquarius. You can park in the lot and walk own to the boat launch and you will see a small island about 1/2 the size of a football field. There are about 6-8 goats on the island no one knows where they came from, no one feeds them, they just eat off the land and drink the river water. It is really interesting. There is also a little rock garden up the road behind Tropicana, someone made 6-7 little rock mazes. The casino you went in River Lodge is pretty new, you need to go upstairs to get to the main casino you were in the lower casino area. The Colorado Bell casino (looks like a steam ship) is no longer open. It closed during the pandemic and never reopened with no mention of it reopening at all. I did not know about the petroglyphs and will have to look for them next time I go. Thanks so much for sharing the video.

@@FromHeretoThere I can't get over how quickly you pivoted from Cairo to Laughlin. On that note, there's a second or two glance on your Cairo video (Gezira Island from the bridge, perhaps) that almost looks like Laughlin, but on a much larger scale.
