Dog’s sense of smell are more stronger than us,human’s sense of smell. They smell everything, even when their human had diseases such as diabetes like this dog alerting his hooman about her low blood sugar.
My mom has a service dog that alerts her when she has low blood sugar, it's a 6 lb Pomeranian. Yes little dogs can be service animals and it is annoying when we go to the store and people try and say he can't be a service dog because theirs no service such a small dog can perform. He has also seemingly learned the triggers for her PTSD on his own and alerts her when someone comes or is coming into a room, or someone at the store is getting or is going to get too close to her... He is an amazing little dog I must say.
We culled off wolves/close ancestors of wolves that weren't nice to hunter gatherer ppls...while kept the nice ones that knew if they didn't bite the hand would feed them. Which over time caused selective breeding, cause the wolves that stayed with hunter gathers would breed with other wolves of similar temperament. And that process leads to domestication syndrome.
Um, yes thank you, I'm familiar with the subject of animal domestication. I didn't ask how we got them, I asked what we did to deserve them. Hypothetically, not in the literal sense but wow bless your hearts.
A towel with a low sugar sample of their sweat/saliva. Ketones build up when ur sugar is high or low. This smell often is said to make someone's breath fruity or bad when it is to a point humans can smell it. But a dog can sense it well before a human (we have 6million olfactory centers, they have about 100million, while the part of the brain that processes and interrupts smell is about 40 times larger than humans.) But this is great cause they can smell the changes quicker.
Oh friend, welcome to dogs. Their sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times better than ours with 300 million olfactory receptors compared to our 6 million. Even the part in their brain that analyzes smell is 40 times better. It'd be less time consuming to ask what they can't smell vs what they can.
Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics could get high levels of blood sugar when the cells of the body aren’t able to uptake the sugar for fuel. No fuel=the body starts to shut down. The body attempts to consume other lesser used sources of fuel, but a waste product of these alternative energy pathways is ketones. Ketones build up and get excreted in the breath and sweat. The smell of ketones can be a warning sign that blood sugar levels are already dangerously high. If the blood sugar problem is not addressed, hospitalization may be required.
I absolutely love how your dog signals, it's so cute. My dog just whines at me and wont stop till I get something to eat because she knows she'll get a treat for alerting me.
Dogs are not the only animals who alert.. I have a cat who comes and headbumps and pats at my arm with his paw if my bloodsugar is too low or too high. On several occaisions while dr is working on adjusting my meds he has come to me and pestered me until I take my bloodsugar. Each time it has been either below 70 or above or near 200.
