What is a Monkey Shoulder?!
A Monkey Shoulder is a term describing a medical condition that the malt men on traditional malting floors could get when they kept performing the repetitive movement of turning the barley with their shiels, resulting in a lower hanging arm on one side - like a monkeys - and was therefore called a "Monkey Shoulder" 🐒
Monkey Shoulder - Blended Malt (originally made with whiskies from Glenfiddich, Balvenie & Kininvie) - 40% - ex-bourbon casks
Notes of pear drops on the nose and malted notes such as barley sugar on the palate.
Have your tried Monkey Shoulder - or perhaps the Smoky Monkey!? 🐵🔥

I just fell in love with Monkey Shoulder tonight but then again I’m drunk so I might feel differently in the morning.
no, its an amazing whiskey
Haha, cheers!
Monkey shoulder is up there with the smoothest whiskies ive ever tried, up there with dalwhinnie 15 and jameson stout cask
Very good appraisal. It originally listed the three distilleries you mentioned on the bottle. Then they changed it to 'triple malt'. And now it's changed again with no mention of the name or number of distilleries. Just bought a bottle for the first time in a while and it's definitely changing. Still malty and sweet but a little less soft and perhaps fruitier than before. Definitely going to finish my glass which is unusual for me - only kidding, I always finish the glass. Oh, and your accent is really interesting - sounds like an Edinburgh brogue but with the Swedish influence peeping through now and again (the sharp 's' in 'floors' for example). Nice job!
For its price, like 25€ here in Germany, it’s a very good „every day drum“ despite you should not drink every day 😅😂
Its very sweet in the nose, with a huge vanilla nose and little bit caramel and lite fruitiness.
In the mouth its very mild and mellow, you get a little bit of smoke and I think you can taste the oak of the barrel in the end.
But it is fast gone again and you can tell that it is a blend of young malts.
I would not choose it over a single malt but its a very nice add on to my collection and I like to go for it some times when i want a uncomplicated, light malt in the evening.
Good one for its price tag
I enjoyed the Monkey Shoulder, but it is on the sweetish side (Speyside?). I would opt for something less sweet as my first option.
Monkey shoulder is my favorite , well when it comes to scotch that is ! Awesome review , cheers
For the price, I liked it a lot. Not the best I tasted, but it is pleasant for now and then.
One of the best $ per $ value and taste you can find. Love it!
Very light and butterscotch. Pretty great for mixed drinks too but I really like Monkey Shoulder after other harsher scotches as a desert scotch.
Always have a bottle of this in, good to give people as their first introduction to scotch. Don't mind them throwing a mixer at it if they wish to either. Often have a long drink in the summer with ginger ale in it. Good review 👏
Paul Gibbs Thank you got watching it! I totally agree - it’s a good value dram that a lot of people will enjoy - that malty note goes well with ginger ale for sure! ☺️
A recent bottle that I've been drinking has had a huge banana, sweet malt character. Good review--it really works as an all-around whisky for mixed drinks or just straight. Yes it's very accessible and there's nothing wrong with that!
Alan Hunt Nice to hear! And Exactly! ☺️
Great review! I plan on trying this soon. Btw you are absolutely gorgeous and have a fantastic accent. Nice to hear a woman’s view on whiskey. Cheers!
I was on a golf trip in St Andrew’s when I first heard of Monkey Shoulder. We were at a pub and we asked the waitress if Monkey Shoulder was a good choice, her reply, “it’s shite”. I have since tried it and enjoy it.
Haha, good thing we all have different whisky preferences 😅
Great review as always. A great all round blend that dosen't break the bank and taste great. I really want to try the smokey one. We just did a review of Monkey Shoulder on our channel too :)
You have a bit of a Scottish accent.
I love Monkey Shoulder...mostly because it's about $25-28, and here it's bottled at 43% ABV. I get the same hard apple candy smell off it that I do Glenfiddich 12 and (even more so) Glenlivet 12. For the price you can't beat it. I had no idea there was a smoky variety; I've definitely never seen it in any store.
Aaron Brasher Ah that’s interesting! The smoky version was intended for bars only, but I think a few online stores might have it as well ☺️
@@swedishwhiskygirl I wish! Ordering whisky online is a bit tricky for us Tennesseeans. Possibly illegal. There's some grey area I think. But most people will only ship wine, and even then only when it's not really hot! Maybe eventually I'll see a smoky monkey.
Agreed that it's a good introduction to malty whisky for sipping and cocktails. I enjoy it neat, my good friend likes it in a cocktail. It's a good easy bottle to share. Thanks for the review.
It’s a good blend, enjoyed the video 👍🏼.

It's funny to see how the arrow on the Tobermory clock jumps during the video, which tells us how the video was actually recorded. 😉
Haha, I realised a clip that I recorded towards the end of the video actually fitted better earlier on so had to edit it a bit ☺️
Hello Swedish Whisky Girl, and thank you for the review. If you get the opportunity to review the peated version 'Smokey Monkey' that will be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work & have a lovely day!
I’ve put it on my to-review list so I I’ll definitely keep it in mind the next time I’m buying a new bottle ☺️ thank you for the request and for watching 🌼
@@swedishwhiskygirl Thank you:)
Ironically I have batch 27 on the shelf right now. It’s an amazing scotch for the price
Allen Whisenhubt Oh lovely! 🙌🏼
All are batch 27. Its not something referring to present batches, its just marketing. They say it was the 27th batch that they picked when they sampled different blends to decide which one was the best and should be put on the market. Just like jack daniels no.7
loooonieeee Oh brilliant - didn’t know that! But that makes way more sense than them doing it in individual batches 🙏🏼☺️
Every single batch is batch 27 world wide. It's called a marketing sales pitch.
Good Review ❤️
Great video swedish whisky girl you have a new subscriber 🥃🥃🥃 cheers
Matt's Cigars And Whisky Oh thank you so much! 🙏🏼☺️ Slainte!
First time I have found your channel, really well presented videos , I am now starting to work through them, sláinte 🥃🥃
Matt's Cigars And Whisky Aw that makes me so happy! Thank you for taking your time to watch 🙏🏼 Will try to keep it up 👍🏻
I would say that monkey shoulder has an oak spiciness as opposed to a roughness!
I absolutely love your accent!🥰
Thank you - I like to think of it as an organised chaos of an accent 😅
Agrega traducción porfavor buen video
I love monkey shoulder.
Does it have a smoke flavor (peat) like connamara Irish whiskey. I heard that was good but I just don't like the peat which I hear is a Scottish thing
lastdracon No this isn’t a peated whisky so no smoky flavours here. You will find there’s a lot of peated scotch whiskies but there’s also LOTS of unpeated whiskies from Scotland if you prefer that as well ☺️
lastdracon There is a smoky version of this whisky called Smoky Monkey however 🔥🐒
Which one has sweetness for drinking neat, this one or Grant's Rum Cask? I have a sweet tooth and I don't like bitterness much, that's why I hate rum now. Thanks
I haven’t tried Grants Rum Cask I’m afraid , but if you are looking for a sweet rum cask influenced whiskey I can recommend Teeling Small Batch ☺️
Hi Moa, which rates better in your opinion: Monkey Shoulder or Dewars White Label Blended? Thanks!
Oh I'm not sure because I haven't tried Dewars White Label in a while but my initial thought is that I would pick Monkey Shoulder which has a bit more body to it ☺️ But if it was between Dewars 12 and MS I'd probably go for the Dewars instead.
@@swedishwhiskygirl thanks for the reply. Dewars 12 years is smoother delicate and less alcohol burn.
A dash of water and it tastes 100% caramel
Can anyone that currently has a bottle of this give me the height measurement of this bottle with cork on? Need to know for a liquor cabinet, thanks in advance.
Just measured it and it's just under 24cm tall ☺️
@@swedishwhiskygirl Just what I needed, thank you so much for doing that.
How does this compare to JW Black Label or Teacher's?
I've never compared them side by side and haven't had Teacher's in ages but I'd probably say that Monkey Shoulder is slightly more robust and has more grain-flavours than JW Black, and the latter has a touch more sweetness and light feel because of the addition of the grain whisky ☺️
In italia la parola fi-ka ha un altro significato....
Wish I had a cute little nose like yours.
A woman that drinks scotch is one strong woman.
Where to buy this whiskey in Sweden?
Stefan Not sure if Systembolaget has it - I would think that they would, but I believe The Whisky Exchange has it and ships to Sweden if not ☺️
@@swedishwhiskygirl Tnx👍🛸
A beautiful girl and a beautiful whisky.... Now that has to be a beautiful blend...
🔥🔥
Had probably 4 or 5 bottles I thoroughly enjoyed. Then one bottle turned me completely off and I haven't tried it again. Very disappointed.
Oh how strange ! What’s your new go-to whisky?
@@swedishwhiskygirl Glenfiddich 12 is always my go to. I prefer a single malt but gave Monkey Shoulder a fair trial. I may try it again.
I get honey and chocolate...
Yum!
I agree. The review is fantastic, but the accent is not Swedish at all.
Thank you, I think 😄
@@swedishwhiskygirl lol sorry if that came out wrong. Your accent is lovely. Thanks again for the great review.
@@SaltyTowers haha no worries! ☺️🙏🏼
Chivas reagal 12 and johnnie walker black is better and cheaper !! little bit disappointed with Monkey shoulder. not good for drinking it neat.
Johny Walker black is neither better nor cheaper. Chivas is ok, and not cheaper either, but I'll take the Monkey Shoulder.
Have you picked up a bit of a scottish accent, thats not a swedish accent i've ever heard haha
Haha, I keep hearing that but it's difficult for me to judge... I just talk and hopefully people understand me ☺️
wouldn't mind having a drink with you..
Only question I have .... will you marry me? 😍
I might be the only feller who does not enjoy this blend.
We all have different taste ☺️ I wouldn't say Monkey Shoulder is my favourite blend either because it's has a bit too much of a cereal character for my palate - do you have any other blended malts that you prefer?
