Outside of the big cities it should/could be a bit better but looking at you're surroundings is always a must!
Haha, true. Tourists on rental bikes for sure are the most dangerous. They never have control over their bikes and are all over the place. Another tip: if you cross a "zebrapad" (pedestrian crossing), don't get scared if a biker comes towards you in full speed. Keep walking in the same pace, in a straight line and with confidence. The biker will adjust (like going around/behind you). If you suddenly stop because you get spooked out, you will for sure be run over. And yes, ofcourse no crossing when there is also a red light.

I once shoulder checked a tourist that just stepped onto the bike path because he was too drunk or high to realize where he was going. Saw it coming from 20 metres ahead, so I braced myself, sped up a tiny bit and pushed him over with my shoulder. His friend was in stitches. It was a bit of a mean thing to do, but at some point one does get fed up with tourists that don't pay attention.
Lol. As as Dutchman I’m so used to the clearly separated bike paths that I was almost run over several times by cyclists in Berlin. Here the only available path in the street was divided by a small white line. 70 cm on the outside for cyclists and the remaining 90 cm on the inside for pedestrians. They will have thought: stupid tourist/Dutchy 🤣
I laughed my ass off :), but it is so recognizable. It could be me swearing at those idiots on the bikepath of death, hahahahaha. I think this situation only exist in Amsterdam, in the rest of Holland there is always a clear separation between the pedestrian path and the bicycle paths. You can't make mistakes about it.
Actually, it’s not the clear separation of the paths but some spots in Amsterdam are so crowded that pedestrians and cyclists are getting in each other’s way very easy.
Where do these numbers even come from ? I guess you don't have to register a bike somehow like a car and also don't have to unregister it when you trash it. So its mostly just the number of sold bikes in the last 100 (or whatever) years without knowing how much don't even exist anymore.
Why would someone apologize for being right? The people were crossing a red light, not the cyclist fault. Might as well make sure they don't do it again.
🤣🤣this is so funny, and so true. Cycling is serious business🤣. I used to work with a bunch of Brits, they bought bikes, I got scared. Indeed, the (pink) bike lanes are for... bikes ;-) Not to walk on, only to cross (when it's clear to do so) And yes, the tourists on bikes are really dangerous (also to themselves), since many have hardly ever driven a bike before, nor have ideas about the traffic rules. Also something that always happen in Amsterdam; a tourist trying to photograph a building (the very specific rooftops) and therefore walks backwards further and further, off the sidewalk onto (you guessed it) the bike lane, where both bicycles and mopeds are driving and thus hitting the totally oblivious tourist. By the way this also happens every now and then with a more dangerous and serious result when tourists step in front of the "tram", which is a trolley driving through the city, knocking the tourist over and sometimes (seriously) injuring the tourist...
My sister used to tell me when I visited her: bikes are to Dutch people what Cows are to Indians. And I can confirm that yes, the comparison fits the bill properly.
Cyclists go thru red lights an awful lot, nowadays, always watching their phones, headphones plugged in their ears. So accidents with them (involving pedestrians and cars) increased where in the past it dropped, due to more education at school, campaigns about having lights and reflection on the bikes.
