    🎉🎉🎉 Thank you Markobi
I Love the way you think and the way you describe what you do and you look at both sides of being a magician and being a fan of magic.
You are truly an artist and I see that 100%.

I just started learning what can be done with cards. I really appreciate what you choose to share. Maybe more importantly, I appreciate what occurs to you to share, as in, how you go about thinking is so much more valuable than just technique. Thank you. ♥

Hi Markobi, I agree with you, I have had similar thoughts, not as a magician but as a musician. This reminds me of something Bill Evans once said: "I believe that all people are in possession of what might be called a universal musical mind. Any true music speaks with this universal mind, to the universal mind in all people. [...] I do not agree that the layman’s opinion is less of a valid judgement of music than that of the professional musician. In fact, I would often rely more on the judgement of a sensitive layman than that of a professional, since the professional, because of his constant involvement with the mechanics of music, must fight to preserve the naivety that the layman already possesses.“

I don't think it's necessary to overcomplicate the definition of magic. Of course the definition depends on the context, like you said, some people say it's "magic" how their smartphone works, and what they actually mean is "I have no idea how this amazing thing works". They know of course that there's a rational explanation. In the context of entertainment, magic refers to creating illusions to entertain an audience. People are also amazed by the performance, they don't know how the illusion works, it feels like magic. They also know it's a trick. Well, most of them.

As a layman, who enjoyed learning magic tricks as a boy, to me magic is the moment of surprise and wonder where something not ordinarily possible in the world is now possible. I think that's also why other kinds of performances (like acrobatics or juggling) or even a new technology can seem like magic.
The techniques behind it can be very simple or incredibly complex. The layman doesn't know the difference as long as it seems like magic to them. Some magicians could get too hung up on techniques and lose their sense of magic, others can be masters in their craft like Penn & Teller, but you can still see the wonder on their faces when they see a trick well done.

For me a magic trick in the core is a known deceit but still hidden. I'd categorise magic to genres like: comedic, dramatic, poetic, and so on. The type of trick (card, coin,..) doesn't really matter to me as much as how the deceit powers the story arc of what the whole thing is about. I guess those things define what is the quality magic to me: level of deceit, genre, story arc, and how the deceit powers the story arc. And what it is, is you know you are being deceived but you just do not know how.
    Interesting topic for sure.
I don't practise magic but I play music and from that perspective I get what you are saying; a lot of times listening to music is not the same as it maybe once was, now it is so often decrypting the theory behind what I am hearing, especially when I like what I am hearing so I can incorporate some of it to my own stuff.

If you're a drummer, you should listen to saxophonists and guitarists. If you are a keyboard player, you should listen to tuba players and so on. It helps the musician to get other points of view. You see your own instrument through another pair of eyes.

I liked this video (especially because you kept it short) but can see YT burying it.
I say the audience's reaction will tell you if something's magic. If I find a meal delicious, I may be curious how the chef made it but ultimately don't care if it was hard or easy to make.

    Wonder. Magic is Wonderful

  • @yeshevishman
    @yeshevishman 4 місяці тому

This is not ONLY a discussion in magic, but this is the same discussion that is going on within ALL artistry. Since art is subjective and based on experience, there are MANY ways to experience art and no "right vs. wrong" way. There is NEVER an objective "truth" to what it is or isn't.
However, magic has an amplification of this in a way that OTHER art does not vy being ABOUT changing perception of reality in a much stronger way. Anyone can be amazed by the realism in a painting, although an artist knows MORE about the talent and technique that went into creating it, and can appreciate that. It is DEGREE of appreciation that separates laymen from craftsman.
With MAGIC, however, understanding more about the technique can take AWAY from a layman's appreciation. As opposed to the painting, which CAN be explained to laymen who want to know more, the knowledge of magic DEMINISHES the experience final artistic product in many ways.
This is because art is ALWAYS about what impression it leaves on the observer. When the impression is ABOUT the distortion of reality (as most of magic is), then revealing WHY your reality is distorted takes that away. Magic, in many ways, is the artistry of manipulating perception (the same way painting is manipulating paint and music is manipulating sound!) At a higher level of understanding, a magician apreciates it the same way as a master painter apreciates the realistic painting, but their perception BECOMES manipulated in the knowledge of the method! It's a catch-22 with almost NO real solution, because perception is ALWAYS subjective!
However, I have ALWAYS used the example from Penn and Teller's Magical Mystery Tour to explain that it's NOT a zero sum game. For those who haven't seen it, Teller talks about how he appreciates an Egyptian magician setting him up for classic cups and balls and the punchline was NOTHING HAPPENED. He had his perception (based on his expectations) manipulated, and ONLY a magician could experience that because he HAS different expectations than laymen.
TL;DR - magic is the art of manipulating perception and expectations which can break down when your perception and expectations are different than average people.

So as a part of discussion, what in your opinion is the difference between magic and technique? If, say for example, one would learn a number of card techniques and would create an act sequencing them in front of an audience it feels like that would not be "magic".
But maybe i am wrong, so can you discuss what this act needs to move into the direction of becoming "magic"?

  • @tranceend

Bruce Lee summed this idea up very well: "Before I studied the art, a punch to me was just like a punch, a kick just like a kick. After I learned the art, a punch was no longer a punch, a kick no longer a kick. Now that I've understood the art, a punch is just like a punch, a kick just like a kick. The height of cultivation is really nothing special. It is merely simplicity; the ability to express the utmost with the minimum."

being mystified creates a feeling somewhat like learning from a very intelligent conversation, where the mind struggles to keep pace , but of course complete understanding always remains illusive with magic, because of the trick. when one sees through the trick, it is kind of disappointing , which gives me even more application of the masters of illusion who never let you down, such as this guy. .

Bravo.

Or it can be just perform a small trick card but it also good as it is even this is not really a standard because it was a try, but when you think about it then you should take some people questions and opinion and read it and answers it like a "ask my anything" type, or not I don't know

As a non-magician, my answer is that there's no such thing as magic. I dislike that we call it magic.
There's my favorite subcategory: sleight of hand.
There's also the subcategory of gimmicked items.
And there's my least favorite subcategory: forcing.
Sleight of hand is my favorite because it takes such incredible skill to develop flawless sleight of hand like Markobi has. Gimmicked items are also interesting because of the different set of skills necessary to design such items, and it still takes sleight of hand to use the item properly. Forcing just kind of pisses me off, and I hate that it's grouped together with sleight of hand and gimmicked items as being "magic."

Sounds like you are comparing magic that is a technical show-off (that on a technical level only other magicians can appreciate, e.g. Penn & Teller's "fool us" show) vs magic for us laymen 🍋, who think the thumb detatching/reattaching trick is fun if the audience is right and there is some witty banter going on (Jack Rhodes has a hilarious routine where he was just doing easy kids tricks on purpose)
