"Though Afong Moy did not speak English, visitors could communicate with her because she was accompanied by her interpreter-a Chinese man named “Atung.”40 Since audience members wondered about her life in China, the practice of foot binding, her long voyage to America, and her impressions of New York, Atung fielded such questions and translated them into the Cantonese dialect for Afong Moy. Atung also made sure Moy did not remain seated for long; every few minutes, he would say a few words in Chinese, prompting Moy to rise from her chair and hobble with difficulty across the room before returning to her seat.”
