Does Bourbon go bad?

  • In this video I do a taste test with 2 bottles of EH Taylor Small batch I have. One of the bottles has been open for over 2 years and the other one is mostly full and only been open for a few months.
By no means does this mean bottles will last forever but I am much less afraid to leave bottles on the shelf for a long time, especially special ones.
I think the most important factors are; making sure there is no direct sunlight on the bottles, that all of the corks are sealed tight, and that it is in a cool location.
Let me know what you think? Do you have any old bottles that are still good?

My thought is to also take care of your cork on bottles that have been open for a longer period of time. You don’t want them to get dry.

      Absolutely

The condition of the cork depends on how much humidity is in the air. Alcohol eats cork, so wetting isn't the answer. You will be replacing natural corks with synthetic over time if you live in the desert.

@0529mpb good info. I live in the desert soooo I'll probably need to do that soon on some of mine

@RocksBourbonReview Get a cork puller for broken wine corks and learn the bag trick for corks that fall through. I gas my bottles with argon if they are half empty and I want to keep them a long time. Air mellows oak. At some point, you start to lose flavor.

@@0529mpb good call on the argon. I’ve seen it used for unfinished wine bottles, makes sense it would work for bourbon.

Good bourbon will always be good no matter how long it has been opened as long you enjoy it over time. Cheers! 🥃

I think a whiskey will not taste as robust if you have those EZ pour caps on them for a long time. My Dad had an open bottle of Chivas Regal 12 year about 40% full in his liquor cabinet for 30 years and it tasted fine. I bought a new Chivas Regal 12 year and they tasted closely the same.

Good whiskey is like a good woman once you pop the cork you should enjoy it until it is gone and then replace it

I have never kept it long enough to find out. I finish it too quickly.

Great Idea. I should do a lot more bind tastings. I especially find that interesting. Thank you for your kind support!

Trust me in a 4 year time frame the production quality is probably not as good.

I have bottles that have been open 10 years and still tastes good.. bourbon you can't really tell the difference. Only thing I can tell from being open a long time is Islay Scotch. The smoke flavor leans more ash after a few months

How about not taking 3 years to drink a good bottle of bourbon?

I will take much longer than 3 years for the good stuff

@@RocksBourbonReview yea I tried it about a month ago and it was still good. Honestly I had a few bottles that I kept and they all change with time. I haven’t had one that got worse with age yet.
