The origin of the word mentor actually comes from mythology. Mentoring in Europe has existed since Ancient Greek times. When we look at the origin of the word Mentor, we see that it goes back to Mentor, the son of Alcimus in Homerus' Odyssey. If we briefly define what a mentor is; we can explain it as developing the person, guiding the person, guiding the person in line with his/her goals.
Mentors provide knowledge and information. Mentors can often see where we need to improve where we can't. Mentors find ways to encourage our personal and professional growth. Mentors encourage and help us keep going. Mentors are disciplinarians who create necessary boundaries for ourselves that we cannot set. Mentors are trusted advisors. And more in this video.
