My pal (an amazing drummer himself) calls this stuff "tiny tapping" which always cracks me up because I always angrily counter with...no, its called dynamics...

This guy is amazing. I feel like he hasn't found his John Coltrane, yet. I'm just waiting to hear what music is inspired by this guy. He's such a sum of his influences and where some forward thinking players left off.
Interesting. He's remarked in his drum book that we're all a "sum of influences". In the book there's a method/concept he designed called D.R.O.P. (Dynamics, Rate, Orchestration, Phrasing) Think about those for a moment, what they mean, and watch this video again with that in mind. This man is already an alien behind the kit.
His style for sure is developed already. Check around on his music though. I think he has found it. He's absorbed a lot of music before he became known in the drum world. I feel he's the first jazz-influenced AND jazz drummer with a sound that's robotic in some ways.
He also doesn't flex technique just because. Also one of the very few that doesn't just display chops for so long. He also embellishes his pocket in no inimitable way. I could go on forever about him. But I think he's found his John Coltrane already.
and you actually CAN do poetry to this .. spoken word segments appear in a lot of his music. 'Beat Music' is an appropriate title...
It took decades of practice to purposefully sound like he just started playing.

Nah dude, it’s all in time, the subdivision skill on this guy is insane.
XneverstopfightingX oh, I know. He’s playing around the beat on top of switching between subdivisions. It’s art, for sure. As I step back, however, I can roughly equate the overall sound to that of someone just starting the drums, but it’s done purposefully. Maybe I’m not making sense here, but it’s just a joke in any case.
@@rnjesus9950 glad you clarified 😂 it's definitely an avant-garde style of drumming and unique style to him. I get the same feeling you get listening to alot of concert stuff (delecluse, John cage,elliot Carter etc.)
