    During the tumultuous political protests touched off by the renewed #BlackLivesMatter protests during the Summer of 2020, the Big Picture aired a quartet of episodes dealing with the complex history of depictions of law enforcement in films, television and other popular media; specifically centering on the transition of "The Police" as viewed by American pop-culture as minor public functionaries and even comedic objects of ridicule in "THE KEYSTONE KOPS" films to virtuous symbols of order in Jack Webb's "DRAGNET" and eventually larger-than-life superheroes often in conflict with the society they ostensibly protected in "DIRTY HARRY" and the like - rendering later attempts to explore or even satirize (as in the "POLICE ACADEMY" franchise) law enforcement as a subject difficult and confused at best.
    This installment of "THE BIGGER PICTURE" collects these episodes - edited and streamlined into a single narrative for clarity - along with other related episodes of the series and select reviews of police-themed films from "ESCAPE TO THE MOVIES" to provide further context and expand on specific themes and the work of filmmakers like Clint Eastwood or series' like "BAD BOYS."
    "THE BIGGER PICTURE" will collect (primarily) more recent episodes of THE BIG PICTURE on a single or related subject into a convenient longer-form feature; edited, annotated and (in certain cases) expanded for topicality. All source content originally published on The Escapist, now property of MovieBob Productions 2020.

    I feel like at some point we should get a REALLY THAT GOOD: ROBOCOP, seeing as how deep he goes into everything about the films he does in that series would be great to hear him go over his favorite film. I have watched the Robocop video about how great it is in this compilation many times over the years, and I would love to see him go more in depth into this film, especially considering how relevant this film's satire is right now

    I maintain that the one and only good part of the Robocop remake is the scene when Murphy asks to see what's actually left of himself, so they dismantle his robot parts until only the mangled head, single hand, a few vacuum-bagged internal organs remain. It was the one moment in which Joel Kinnamen sold me on the ghastly body horror of Murphy's situation.

    • @Gigas0101
      @Gigas0101 4 роки тому +3

      That scene was great, though the fact that they kept Murphy's hand when the original movie threw it away always felt like the remake admitting it wasn't capable of matching the original.

    Good analysis, but I wish you could have mentioned how one of the most popular comic strips, Dick Tracy, was created by Chester Gould in the 1930s partially in disgust of gangsters like John Dillinger getting lionized in the media and he wanted the police to get a fictional hero of its own.

    • @digitaljanus
      @digitaljanus 4 роки тому +20

      Dillinger, Bonnie & Clyde, and their bank-robbing contemporaries were being lionized for the same reason the cops were an easy target for comedy in the Keystone pictures: it was the Great Depression, a lot of people were out of work or otherwise poor, and it was a nice break from their misery to see someone stick it to The Man.

    I can’t even watch the original Law & Order. Seeing a man shot live for seemingly doing nothing, other than possibly being the wrong color, is terrible but doesn’t shake one’s faith in society. Seeing the police chief dealing with said event by playing it off as ‘no big deal, happens everyday’ -that is what shakes ones faith in society. Imagining 2/3 Lt Van Buren’s police force shooting unarmed people and/or covering it up, spoils the whole premise. And seeing these really did make me question what is the exception and what is the rule for police violence/corruption, considering the media back patting of police.

      The Escapist's parent company chose not to renew their contract with Bob after its original term was fulfilled. In mid-October, they publicly announced Bob would not be part of the Escapist's content rotation going forward. By all accounts, it was a relatively amicable end to things.

    56:53 - I agree that the original _Robocop_ 's Det. Lewis is super-awesome and one of the best sidekick characters ever because she so completely subverts so many tropes without anyone saying anything about it - just by being _her_ - you can't call Michael K. Williams "just a guy" - he's fuckin' _Omar_ dammit, show some respect! ;-)
    tbh I haven't seen, and don't intend ever to see, this or any other thing called "Robocop" besides the actual _Robocop_ , so I don't know if he's any good in it.

    • @ian2081
      @ian2081 4 роки тому +11

      A keystone is the uppermost stone in an arch, the ‘key stone’ that holds the arch together in place. A cornerstone, is, well, the corner of a foundation where two walls are joined. It’s usually the first stone laid, hence it’s use in metaphor.

      I like the 80s movie a lot, even still, but don't know how much of that is because I was 12 when it came out, so it was exactly the kind of Dragnet movie I wanted 😄. But it's in that weird category of movie that was a big hit in the moment, but kind of got forgotten just a few years later as Aykroyd's cachet faded and Hanks moved away from zany comedies, so it's not often considered a beloved comedy classic.
