A video I'm watching for the first time, being a recent subscriber, and can't find more words to express my total admiration about them all: BRAVISSIMI!!❤ Thank you for sharing such beautiful videos!
This new fangled version of the old Beating Retreat by the Guards has tried to jazz up the old format. Unfortunately we have lost several elements of the old show in the process. No more mounted display by the bands of the Household Cavalry, and no massed Corps of Drums either. The Pipes & Drums still get a small medley which was Irish tunes this year in keeping with the Irish Guards Trooping the Colour a few weeks prior. That display was cut from this video which only shows excerpts from about half of this years' show. Still, this is a nice video with titles of the music and some good video angles. As what tends to be the case nowadays whenever an old format is upgraded they cut out the more traditional elements and replace with crowd pleasers like fireworks and some jazzy music. Not the same in my opinion, but at least The Guards are still able to put on a modern version of the old Beat Retreat. This was well attended by many young people which is encouraging and I guess you have to make these changes now in order to get their attendance. But unfortunately you always lose something in the process when these changes and upgrades are made. Such is life in this 21sts Century post Covid world.
It always amazes me that the marching bands can play so many different compositions in the same show while performing complicated drills and never looking out of breath! Thanks for sharing the performance with us, Military Bands Everywhere. Did you get a paper program for the show, describing it and identifying the various regiments and Drum Majors, the solo saxophonist, etc., & who choreographed the intricate drills & chose the music selections ?
I can help on the Drum Majors, They were, Drum Major Daniel Fairley, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. Drum Major Stu Laing, Welsh Guards. Senior Drum Major Gareth Chambers Drum Major Paul J. Carson, 1st Battalion Irish Guards Assistant Senior Drum Major Scott Fitzgerald.
@@delvinrodriguez3341 As always, thank you! So, it's the same 5 DMs each performance? And I wonder if it was the first time a musician performed on the roof like Paul McCartney. I thought that was pretty cool.
@@susandreger-epps3676 You're most welcome!! Yes, the same Drums Majors as in the Troop. This is usually the case as 5 Drum Majors are usually picked for every year to do ceremonial duties (well 3 if you don't count DM Chambers and Fitzgerald). Hmmm, as for a Musician performing in the roof, not sure. I know that it has happened at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
@@delvinrodriguez3341 Personally, I always count Fitzgerald even when he's not there. LOL Seriously, though, I do find it confusing sometimes, because I just seem to get used to a DM being appointed as a Senior DM and then he disappears. And was DM Roddha ever a Senior DM?
@@susandreger-epps3676 It can all be very confusing! Senior Drum Majors usually have the role for 4 years then they either retire, or take another role, like Senior DM Damian (2018-2021) who now is an instructor. But not sure if it's a rule that when you reach 4 years you need to leave or it's just a tradition. Sadly DM Rodda hasn't been Senior Drum Major yet, I say yet because he can still be chosen. Because DM Gareth was brought back from retirement. So it's possible, I personally think he'd make a great Senior Drum Major. Would be great to see him as Senior DM in the future!
I noticed that too, trapezemusic. I was surprised, because it looked as if most of the guys in the rows ahead of the camera had soldier haircuts. But it seemed that most of the chatter stopped when the Household Cavalry band was performing.
You are 100 percent right...the days of the quiet thinking and observing man are long gone....but the British tradition of the best military bands in the world are still here and better than ever...and im an American observor, trombonist and military rifleman...its great to see British discipline at its finest for without it you have nothing..
@@Littlewing1986 Her height does not affect her ability to be a good musician, but (in my opinion) a military band on parade should look good as well as sound good, and (again in my opinion) having a very short person among taller people does affect adversely the look of the parade. (Ditto having fat people, of whom there seem to be quite a few in the bands these days.)
Appearance has everything to do with serving in a Guards band. Using your logic you would be quite happy with the female members of the band wearing skirts and high heels.
@@frederickcoppillie3396 No, I would certainly not approve of military bandswomen wearing skirts and high heels! I am not sure what you are getting at. My point was that I think a military parade looks best if everybody in it is reasonably tall, all roughly the same height, and nobody overweight. You may of course disagree.
Excellent video. Being a dyed in the wool traditionalist, with such a choice of memorable classics, ask why on earth totally unsuitable limited shelf life pop tunes dominate - is this just another attempt to be politically correct by catering to the plebian musical education of the masses?. It appears a good deal of the audience have zero appreciation anyway for this amazing spectacle which no doubt cost blood sweat and tears to perfect.
Went on the Thursday and have to say didn't think it was as good as previous years, personally would prefer it more military based and not banging on about tree's. I also think the fireworks were poor and pointless especially since it was still very light and there impact was nil. Also the female host was dull and boring and added absolutely nothing to the show, marks out of ten for the event sadly only 5 which is sad as it used to be so much better.

I was there. Absolutely enjoyed the event.
Wish I had been there but I live in Canada. Originally from England though.
I attended the Weds 6th. A great spectacle and atmosphere, but even more so the level of musicianship was incredible. Respect to the guys (and girls)!
26:05 the part some of you have been looking for, he was rocking 😎🎸🤘
Spiffing video! The bands sounded amazing! Great display!
Great stuff, eh! Regards from London, Ontario, Canada
That is a lovely march that was written for her Majesty's Jubilee. Such a beautiful performance.
Great video
Hope, there’s no chatter when I go to beating the retreat next Thursday
Yes, too bad about the behaviour of the younger boys and girls talking during the performance....no respect.
@@emstirling-is4nuwhen I was young I always was quiet lol. Loved these parades
Unfortunately we had no TV so I am just thrilled to see them here...big fan.@@AdmiralNeIson

Awesome military music
They keep shrinking the bands.
Thanks you for sharing 👍
Great video, looking forward to this on Thursday evening now.
Brilliant👍👍👍👍Thank you.
New Layout to previous years by the looks of it. Great Display by the Household Division!
Wished I been there! Fantastic experience 👏 thanks 😊

Was this Thursday the 7th I was there ??absolutely fantastic
This was filmed on Tuesday 5th. Excellent event every night though!!
Ahhh thankyou it was an amazing show... wow from start to finish was a lovely night Thursday night too thankyou for replying 😊
Why was Zadok the Priest cut so awkwardly? It is a spectacular piece of music!
I wish all spectators would stop talking (aka flapping their gums) once the bands come into view. Sadly. I know that is too much to ask for.

I could not believe how small/short the bandsman is in the left-hand rank 5th from the front , Why would a Guards Band have such a small person ?
Because height has absolutely nothing to do with her ability to be a guards musician

No it's called getting with the times and catering for today's audience! A case of supply and demand!
Why don't people shut up and listen to the music ruined the video
Would like to see them rejected!
