    I love how the tail comes off the ground before these aircraft begin forward motion. Simply amazing.

    • @TheNachotime
      @TheNachotime 7 років тому +3

      technically the pivot off the landing gear is forward motion until the ground forces the wheels to roll. but yeah. pretty cool stuff

    • @roycevanbeethoven
      @roycevanbeethoven Рік тому

      Late to the party, but lifting the tailwheel decreases the angle of attack of the wings, reducing induced drag to allow the aircraft to get to rotation speed faster and in a shorter distance.
      Letting the tailwheel stay on the ground would hamper the aircraft's ability to generate lift under its wings.

      Ouli93 : Thrust and lift. Robby P in the final shot only had a Rotax 912. All up weight about 1500 pounds plus his seat.

    Thanks for posting some real down to earth aircraft and pilots in a place that still
    free to fly in. Those guys look like first rate pilots. The kind you looking for on a trip
    in to the back country or that could drop in a tight spot and take you out if hurt
    thanks for posting

    I'm assuming the tail lifts pretty much from stationary because of the airflow over the aircraft from the propeller?

    • @calebingraham5179
      @calebingraham5179 7 років тому

      Yep, the airflow from the prop is enough to generate lift, basically its faster than the tail`s stall speed

    2:11 how did this guy not stall at that angle? Isn't there a risk of the air flow over the wing going from laminar to turbulent at that angle? I was taught just to point the nose at the horizon when taking off but I'm not doing STOL. I use a huge runway.

    • @logankotz6851
      @logankotz6851 7 років тому +2

      they are probably using something like a 90 hp rotax in the smaller planes, in the larger planes probably a 4 cylinder lycoming making roughly 150hp

      short takeoff and short landing competition. If you didn't notice, these takeoff and landings are incredibly short.

  • @rubiconnn
    @rubiconnn 6 років тому

    Why don't they move the front landing gear forward so that they can just mash the wheel brakes without tipping forward?

    • @JM-nz8gw
      @JM-nz8gw 6 років тому

      Rubiconnn They’re designed as taildraggers because theh are meant to land anywhere. Many bush pilots land on grass, gravel, dirt, etc. The tires have to be beefy; some use 35” bush fat tires to be able to land anywhere. A trike design can’t really have big tires like that, plus an extra big tire would slow down the plane due to drag and weight.
