- *James is shown looking at himself in a restroom mirror. After staring at
himself for a short time he takes in a deep breath.*
James: Mary... Could you really be in this town?
*James walks outside of restroom and into the observation deck parking lot.
Mary's voice is then heard as James walks to the edge of the parking lot that
overlooks Silent hill.*
Mary: In my restless dreams, I see that town.
Silent Hill.
You promised you'd take me there again someday,
But you never did.
Well I'm alone there now...
In our 'special place'...
Waiting for you...
James: I got a letter.
The name on the envelope said 'Mary.'
My wife's name...
It's ridiculous, couldn't possibly be true...
That's what I keep telling myself...
A dead person can't write a letter.
Mary died of that damn disease three years ago.
So then why am I looking for her?
Our 'special place'...
What could she mean?
This whole town was our special place.
Does she mean the park on the lake?
We spent the whole day there.
Just the two of us, staring at the water.
Could Mary really be there?

I lost my dad to suicide when I was like 9 years old, I used to look for him around the streets thinking that maybe he would come back some day. Reminds me of James looking for his wife even though he knows she's dead.

i've made a similar experience, i lost my mom when i was 12 years old due to pulmonary embolism. later, when i was older, i've had dreams where she just returned home, but could'nt speak, like we're sitting on the table and eating, she sits there as well but dont speak a word. weird, never talked about this before :D
In case anyone like me wonder why does James run his hands over his face like that, apparently it’s a lucid dream technique people use to see if they are awake or not. So James is trying to see if he’s dreaming or not by looking in that mirror.

@@mauzki- NO!! Have you tried it yourself? It really pisses me off -- everyone is talking this crap but no one tried! James is NOT looking at the player -- even more, there's no eyes, because it's too dark plus compression artifacts.
@@Valet2 apparently theres been brightened up images of james apparently looking at the player but it wouldn't make sense if he actually was wouldnt it?
@@Valet2 I want to believe but it seems all the pixels are just plain black, there's no way you could brighten the image and since it's pre-rendered you can't even look at the 3D model in different lighting condition or angle :/
The shot is fuckin brilliant and it makes his reflection look hollow and lifeless. I interpret it as him putting on his mask to the player.
When you consider just how bad even Hollywood-grade CGI of human characters looked around the time the game was released, it's absolutely crazy just how realistic the initial shot of James looking in the mirror still looks more than 20 years later
Even more impressive when you consider that it was made by one guy.
And then we have this dogshit by Bloomber team

@@NickyNicest Well, I'm not a fan of the current copyright laws. Part of the reason is because it lasts past death, which is why I consider it that way. "A dead person can't write a letter," is the best way to some up one issue with current copyright laws.
The line when she say " You promised you'd take me there some day again " has this very subtle and sad like the way the voice actor delivers it like she have gone thru this problem before it feels so real everytime i played it the voice is just soo genuine feeling we can feel it too
The voice actress reportedly was breaking down towards the end of the full letter, and you can even hear her voice breaking at the end. The letter is just so overwhelmingly lonely and sad, i get why she started crying.

The English translation of this line, more specifically, the part of "But you never did" actually kind of removes some important subtext from the original language. It is implied that Mary doesn't blame James for not fulfilling their promise, more so her own sickness from derailing their lives and preventing them from doing so.

Such a sad game, I go though a whole gamut of emotions whenever I hear the music, hear the voice actors, just think of the general tone and story. Thank you for such a high quality upload, very clear and the description is nice to read to.

One of the best scenes in video game history. The mood and atmosphere perfectly captured. It feels like a dream you had, or a place you've visited without remembering the details.
One day. My father killed my mother in front of me and i couldn't do anything. Just watch while hugging a pillow and crying. My mother was so kind and nice. She was also pretty hearted woman. She was caring about people around her. I wanted to be like my mother. I didnt want to be like my father. My father is still staying at jail for almost 3 years. It happened when i was 12 year old. Now im 15 year old. Trying to act kind and nice to people around me like how my mother did to everyone. I always go to her grave. And talk to her. I wish she was alive. Sometimes i go to his grave and sleep next to his grave. Feeling safe. This video reminds me of my mother. Thank you.

this is one of the best video games intros of all time, the way Mary reads his letter with the eerie ost then James start speaking and that guitar starts is just wow, i has hooked into the game the moment the ost started playing. hope the remake will be good because this is the best survival horror game of all time

Playing this game for the first time sadly spoils it for subsequent playthroughs. But you truly don't forget the first time you complete it.
not really, you can try to get different endings. and personally, every time I play through it (like 20+ times now) I notice something different. obviously since it's a story driven game the 2nd playthrough isn't going to be as impactful as the first, but saying that it "spoils" the experience simply isn't true, otherwise I would have stopped after my first or second playthrough.
@@hypnos9336 For me, the game was so f*cked up and psychologically disturbing that I couldn't even manage to play it on around my 4th playthrough. I don't know, I just couldn't take it anymore. I had a good time the first few times around, but the concepts that were explored in the game hit a little too close to home. I still thoroughly enjoy the music from the game though. I'm glad other people found a lot more in subsequent playthroughs.

Play it. It’s incredibly easy to find the PC version and the enhanced edition. It’s one of the greatest games ever made. Please don’t play the remake as a substitute; no matter how solid that ends up being, it will never be a replacement for this amazing game.

I really, REALLY hope the "White Noize" OST is kept in the remake. It's one of the best pieces of music I've heard, so brief yet so chilling.

A lot of the ambiences that were used by Akira were from sound sample cds, or musical libraries. I imagine most, if not, all of the ambient music will be kept as is.
This story is really better than any horror movies
The reason why Silent Hill 2 it became a classic is because eventually people began to see how unique, eerie, melancholic and authentic the game's atmosphere it really is, and took the time to enjoy its deeply thoughtful narrative and symbolism. To this day it’s by far one of, if not the most mature examination of grief, sexual trauma, suicide, and morality all combined. It’s an intelligent game that does not hold anyone’s hand and comes at the player with utmost confidence in itself. It’s fantastic stuff. The rest of the original 4 are great in their own right and have their own well written stories, but they don’t hold the same emotional weight to them. I think SH2’s maturity by comparison is something that a lot of people are drawn to. ☯️
Out of anything this to me is the best story in any game made.. im not going to speak for anyone else but to me the voice acting, the crazy shit James goes through... man.. this is one of the best stories ever told! To me its real!

I was born in 2007. A time when this game was 6 years old already. And even tho i don't experience it myself, i can imagine the nostaliga millenials experience watching this intro of one the best games of all time once again. The music, the dialog, the eerie atmosphere, It really is amazing
This is still the best horror game with a deep story. No horror game has come even close to this level

I first played this in 2006 when I was only 11. I was a horror junkie back in the days and no other game gave me the same experience it feels as if the game was truly alive, like a portal to another realm. I’m glad young people are recognizing this masterpiece!
It sounds weird, but I don't think people knew what they had at the time. Read the Gamespot review for the PC version, where they called the story Nonsensical and Implausible and gave it a 6.2

He cries all the time now, he just looks like a man baby, instead of a lost soul wandering across purgatory while slowly remembering the truth about his past. One of the coolest things about the silent hill games is how dreamy they seem, with the characters having very small reactions to terrifying things, and it made the experience way scarier overall. They really ruined that in the remake by making James overreact a lot, making it seem way less dreamy and more like a generic western horror game.
I have... concerns. I am happy to finally get new content (that was no doubt brought on by Konomi's utter shock form the DBD crossover that people still care about this title), but I can't help but feel it will sort of be like it's own thing, similar to the RE3 remake, but maybe slightly less obvious. It will never replace the original. I already saw various conflicting themes in the trailer alone that wouldn't quite make sense in the original, but I still have high hopes and believe it will be decent, maybe even good, in its own right.

Actually it's some of the best voice acting when you think of it. Everyone sounds so "off", from their tone and even how they respond to each other. Except Laura arguably. This is to create a dreamlike sense of discomfort. And then right at the end when we actually hear Mary, this time, it's delivered genuinely, and emotionally.
When i woke up in the morning and go to the bathroom i always remember this scene,specially on monday

It's kind of there an not at the same time. James at the start is unaware Mary is in the car. James as he is in the beginning is so blinded by pain and is purposely forgetting she is there. The game silent hill i suppose forces him to see this. This is his silent hill/ dream state.
Theyre're hard to see, but there are posters of Maria's face on the wall of the restroom. Flyers for Heaven's Night.
After Fallout getting a good adaptation, i have hope for the upcoming Silent Hill movie. Return to Silent Hill.

I can’t stand how James cries more often like he lost Mary recently. I like his lack of emotion and sense of absence from his reality since she passed. It’s a more suited detail of his dilemma.

After the Silent Hill 2 Remake reveal. I’m freaking excited to see all of these scenes again to its fullest potential, though Guy Cihi not reprising his role as James, but I faith in whoever the person is voicing James in the remake.
It's definitely not the same. But I'm sure I'll come around to liking his voice once the game's out.
