I’ve always been trying to figure out on how to film overhead. This will be useful!
Awesome Cindy! Again this is just my way of doing it, there are other ways, but this will hopefully give you some good practices overall :)
Great video and some excellent tips there Ben! Another option for mounting a camera overhead - I use an old boom arm style microphone floor stand, and bought a SmallRig camera clamp mount. I removed the microphone mount from the end of the boom arm and then clamped the SmallRig camera mount in its place. Now I can move the stand anywhere I want (as well as raise and lower its height by 3 feet or so), adjust the boom arm angle and have it pointing straight down at the subject area. Cheap and simple, and it works!
That is a FANTASTIC diy work around,
LOVE IT! 👏🏻
Looks like a very helpful comment, thanks for sharing. Can you please share what exactly you use so I can use the same setup.
Been waiting for this!

Huge fan of this video. Right now I have a ring light on a C stand with a phone holder to film my overhead shots. I’m mostly shooting notebooks so it’s works, but I need other options for when I’m filming screens or shiny options. Thanks for the lighting inspo.
Ah yes I could see the reflecting being an issue, glad it works for your notebooks tho!
@@benjohnsoncreative I’ve been doing an offset lighting to not get a glare and a different camera angle - playing around man. It’s fun

A million thanks bro! Got me searching for the lepow monitor, i thought it was an ipad or something. nice content again bro. Keep it up!
Definitely looks like an iPad right?! Haha but just a monitor. It’s pretty neat tho! Been using it with my iMac as a secondary to watch UA-cam videos while I make UA-cam videos 😂
@@benjohnsoncreative Nice! =)
Hi again😁. Can you make a video about that small monitor which is conected to your camera, please?! Thank you both.✌🏻
Its a Neewer 4k 7inch monitor :)
Thanks for the tips. I've watched lots of videos on tour channel today ☺️
Thanks for supporting!
Nice Tipps. Blew my mind, that i can just try if my mic stand can support my cam. Subbed and Liked, great content.

Would love an updated version of this or newer products you may recommend
I’ll add it to my list
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks! I’m trying like heck to find a table like you had to shoot the top down on. The ikea one I want isn’t available to ship sadly and my closest IKEA is 3 hours away haha

Hey Ben! What focal length do you recommend for flay lays like this?
I liked the good video
Thanks Midilaj!
കൊള്ളാം പോളി സാധനം
Thanks for watching!
Tks for your video. May I check what is the monitor you have linked to your tripod stand where you watch the top down video while you do your display?
Here you go : amzn.to/3mw2DdU
Very helpful video. Would have liked to have seen some commentary on that cool monitor you have off to the side. How are you connecting it to the camera?
HDMI cable, it’s a Neewer 4k monitor
Super cool hack. Gonna try it with my 5d mark2. Might be a bit heavy for my mic arm. :D
Yes take it slow and safe when trying haha!
Very good!
Video idea: how do you light a subject wearing glasses?
I talk about it in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/IXe3rEWrDVg/v-deo.html
But I can do a full video on this as well!
Great video Ben! What are thoughts on the Sony A6400?
LOVE the a6400 highly recommend for youtubers!
Great video man! What table is this?
It’s just a rolling table I found at my local Target a few years back
✌🔥
Thanks for watching RAJ!
What brand is the key light that u used
Super like
Big thanks!
Cool tutorial dude :) what camera and lens did you use for the overhead rig?
In this video I used a Song a6300 but I've recently switched to the Sony ZV1 and love it for overhead shots: ua-cam.com/video/roe4w5DYok8/v-deo.html
Any tips on how to prevent light reflection on the sapphire crystal when doing wrist watch reviews?
I would try putting the crystal on an angle or slant, and then angle your camera on a tripod to match to keep the flat lay look
This may help
You can also try bouncing the light off of other objects in the room to disperse it
Great video for flat shots. I'm thinking of upgrading from a Canon camcorder to a Z but I'm not sure which one, but I saw your Z video). Do you have any suggestions? I would like it easy and nothing fancy, Thank you
Not sure if this was the video you saw, if not, it should help answer: ua-cam.com/video/Bu1AjBO7lNQ/v-deo.htmlsi=1kZ5B6vgDNdInrqo
what mic do you recommend for unboxing videos that can capture those crispy unboxing moments and tearing of plastic covers? budget tier
Hi Ben. Just wondered what frame rate and shutter speed you shoot your videos at. They are so crisp. I’m shooting 25fps / 1/50 shutter with manual focus. It just not as crisp as I would like. Thanks
I do the same :) I color grade tho and it’s shot in 4k
What lens for over head shoot? My camera is zve10.
million subscriber soon your
Thanks so much!
I discovered your channel today. Now I already rank it number two from premier gal channel. Love your work. I am spending the rest of 2020 on this channel. What are you planning for us new subs for year 2020?
Glad you are enjoying the channel! Let me answer your question with a question: what content would you like to see? I’m always interested to hear what my subscribers are finding beneficial, what problems you guys have, and if I can help bring solutions
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks so much for your warm welcome. Most UA-cam channels out there are churning out the IJKL of the industry. For most of us who are starting or almost starting, we are yearning to learn the ABCD of the industry. Glad that you are giving us that!
Hey Ben, how exactly did you setup the camera with the rode microphone stand? I bought the Ulanzi ballhead but can’t seem to figure out how to attach it to the stand. Also what goes in between the ulanzi and the camera, could you also link that?
You may need to get a 3/8 to 1/4 inch screw Adaptor to mount it to the Ulanzi. I’m using a manfrotto ballhead here which has a 3/8 inch screw on it instead of the regular 1/4 inch
What camera was on the mic arm?
I use the Sony ZV1 or ZVE10 for top down shots
the head of my mic stand is a ball joint, I couldn't tell from your video if yours was the same thing.
My mic stand is not a ball head joint but the tripod plate adaptor I’m putting on it is
what's your favorite monitor display for the Sony camera?
I love this as an on camera monitor for filming myself: amzn.to/2PbxBKM
The exact external one I use is out of stock but it’s a 4K 7inch around $150-200 any of those should work great
How do I connect the Ulanzi U-80L to the attachment pin on the PSA 1? The attachment pin is too big for it. Did you use an adapter?
I use a manfrotto tripod head that has the proper thread
The desk in the description, is that for the one in the background or the one for the product shots. I'm in the market for one and I like how that has wheels. Cool channel, btw!
The desk in the description is for the desk my computer is on, I got the one with wheels from target
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks for the reply! Glad to hear it wasn't a special order, or something along those lines. Heading to their site to find it now. (or something comperable)
what i really like about this table is that its flat.
As in not textured
What’s the adapter used to convert the mic arm for the camera? Also, what will I need to attach an iPhone instead. Thanks for this video.
The mic is a 5/8 thread
You’ll need an Adaptor from 5/8 to 1/4 inch which would be a standard for camera tripods and phone mounts
In my case I used a manfrotto ballhead which has a 5/8 thread on the bottom, and a quarter inch thread on the top
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks
hi! Which camera do you suggest using for avoiding the autofocus issue when creating unboxing videos?
Any autofocus can cause issues, I’d recommend using Sony tho, they have better autofocus than most
@@benjohnsoncreative thanks dude!
Hey Ben can you provide the link of poster board which you used in this video ❤️
I just got it at a local craft store
Hey Ben, I was wondering what monitor you are using in this video? Don’t see it listed in your items or description. If you want to flip me an Amazon aff link that would be great!
Thanks for sharing Ben. Please share the cheapest and best quality web camera for live recordings. Also what are these side lights you have? What do you call them?
I am from India and I don't see them on Amazon in my country please share how should I buy these?
Thanks a ton.
Check BAndH they are called fotodiox flapjack
@@benjohnsoncreative okay sure thanks for quick response. Love your videos. 😉
what camera/lens are you using in the video?
I use the Sony A7c: amzn.to/3joWZfo
with the 20mm 1.8: amzn.to/3YfVGOE
Did you shoot the overhead in a flat picture profile & edit it?
Weird question but I love your hat, d you know the model name or where to get it?, I find it hard to find that kind of fit lol
This is it I think: amzn.to/3zSKhHW
