Ikr, I was watching someone try it on stream earlier in a group of four. It took them a few tries before succeeding and the streamer was a veteran player who has been playing MH since the original on PS2.

Thanks for this great video on showing GPs. Your videos are really amazing and a great insight to the world of Monster Hunter! I hope I helped out a bit and please do correct me if I am mistaken somewhere.
gaijin hunter, you're my Charge Axe hero! Seriously, after seeing your video on the GP last time, I didn't bother to try the idle GP AT ALL. But seeing this video made me realize just how useful (and fun!) it is to master it as well. By the way, can you explain in a bit more detail about that part where you do the super by holding back and pressing X? Thank you very much!
If you have your shield charged, you will do an ultra as your third special attack. However, if you press (or spam) back tilt on the circlepad and x, it will do the super attack instead.
OK, I tried it out. So it's basically like a cancel move that goes from Ultra into Super. That's really good! I can save the phials if I know that I'm going to miss the Ultra! Thanks a lot for the explanation, Buri13.
Load up can be great too. Once you get the barrage earring it's easy to get and with charged shield that's two extra phials.... For impact charge blades artillery can be useful too.
Hey, just noticed when practicing, you don't need to combo to guardpoint from sword to axe, if you tap and release X and R very quickly (its a bit easier if you hit X first, then R, but its still gotta be like with a few frames), it will result in the delayed switch, also, pressing the kick button the on the touch screen when in sword mode also results in a guard point switch.
Hi, Gaijin! I really love your tutorials. They are awesome :) Well, two things: 1) I used to miss the Super EAD (instead Ultra EAD), but a friend discovered something really nice: you can change in menu>options>orientation and set to "type 2". Now, it doesn't matter where you are looking, to change from ultra to super press down on circle pad (even if you character is looking down too) :) voi lá! 2) regular blocks seems to work like GP. Is it true? With normal blocks I can eventually stun the monster too (with shield boost, of course)? In you tutorial you said that there's no GP from idle sword to axe (R+X), because the hunter pulls from his back, mas you're using it in this video. I'm confused now: R+X idle (not X, then R+X) works for GP to? Thanks! (Sorry for my English, I'm brazilian)
GPs are different than regular blocking since: 1. You won't lose sharpness 2. You won't consume stamina 3. You can counter attack If the axe's charged then the shield will burst dealing extra damage (not sure if ko or the same as the cb's phials).
At 5:33 I saw that you reached a full charge, then reloaded to get phials. But then you did a split sec mode switch to axe and spent your phials into red super very quickly (sorry if I got the name wrong). How did you do that? I have to switch to axe, press x+a, then press r during the last charge attack to spend my phials into a red super.
Huh. I clicked this video out of curiosity just to suggest the Guard +2 thing, and that happened to be a large part of the video itself. How about that. Though I admit I like to go one step further sometimes and do things like put the Guard Boost skill on top of +2 and practice with Rajang or weird-angle beams you normally can't block. If you can block lightning, you can block anything!
What combo did you use to charge your shield at 5:30? I saw the axe for a brief second, then you pulled the sword back out and had the shield loaded... it has something to do with the shelling i guess...
I didn't know GP until I saw this video, it's been 50hrs using CB. So that's why I accidentally blocked some attacks while morphing Practicing GP took me few hours to get used to it while doing actual hunts
chernabogs scythe is an amazing charge blade and i use guard points all the time with it, reccomended for all hunters because its easy to get and you can get it early in g rank too
It is but don't accidentally hit R first or it'll count as a guard to morph meaning zero guard point. Alternatively you can tap the special icon on the touch screen to do it as well
gaijin hunter Hey I'm new to the game, just reached Caravan 8 and I use the charge blade as my primary weapon, but I don't understand what's happening here, can you explain it? Sorry for the hassle, I love your videos though
superleetninja if you check out his video on CB tutorial it has a better explanation but I will do my best, during some animations the hunter will put the shield in front of them and gain the guard ability of a lance instead of a great sword, with the shield charged it's even more powerful. If you do the shield charge move at the end you will see the hunter put the shield in front of them, I don't use guard point (that's what it's called) but I have blocked a brachy and a pink rathian from doing a leap attack and poison tail respectively. Hope I helped
Aaron Care I've been playing non-stop since I made that comment, and I've learned a lot of things including guard point since then, thank you for taking the time to explain it though :]
What happened at 1:43 ? He seems to input GP (since CB already morphed into axe mode when he gets up at 1:46) but he can't block the attack. Are the first few frames not count as GP? I myself have this issue a lot :(
1 year late reply. At 1:43 he most likely used a regular morph to axe attack. You need to either press X and R at the same time or X then press R after a slight delay to get gp frames on a morph attack. If you accidentally press R then followed by X you won't get any GP frames. (You can also use the kick action button, typically the START button or the touch pad, to do morph attack with gp frames.) You can visually see the difference because the morph attack with gp has longer animation time compared to the gp-less morph attack.
Isn't Guard+2 "Greatly increases the likelihood of standing your ground when blocking an attack." and not a guarantee guts ( I thought it was used to be called survival) which prevents fainting only one time, and not everytime u get OHKO with hp at 60%
hi gaijin, in minute 4:55 you done a Super discharge after block. im pressing R to block then X+A and i cant do super discharge. im doing something wrong? you recomend me guard+2 or something? i have hg earplugs, honed blade, challenger +2, razor sharp. Thanks
Wow, I started going towards insect glaive as I felt it took way less maintaining during battle, but watching your GPs makes me want to jump right back into CB. Love the videos. By the way, I know when you GB, you get a free "phial blast" right? Is it the same for when you do the shield thrust?
you get a free phil blast on shield thrust but only when you have boost mode on. boost mode is like the place to be at all times, you aint boostin? you aint nothin'
I noticed at about 5:04 the Tigrex flinched at a GP, does the GP actively do damage then? Being someone who used to use a heck of a lot of lance this GP stuff is very interesting to me, as I already have the knowledge of timings and when to guard for most monsters so I may be able to take advantage of this :P
***** when GP activates you do blast damage if i remember correctly and if it's on the face it does KO/Elemental damage. so yeah it does actively do damage back to the monster when you block. that's why guard point is such a strong thing to master.
It does if the shield is boosted. You see the yellow impact phial burst during GPs, and so can exhaust/KO a monster faster. The phial applies even if you're not directly hit by the monster, but rather its projectile, if you manage to still be in close to it. Eg. GP-ing rocka thrown at you will dmg a monster if you're close to it when the phial goes off.
Just a note to people struggling with when to GP: if you still have it, use the auto-guard charm to figure out the right timing without getting smacked around, lol.
I just realized that hes using the G rank Silver Rath CB that we cant get at the momoment lol. That specific CB though has to upgrade like over 10 times :O
That looks to be a defense hone. It's a weapon 'enchantment' you get later into the game. They do look similar so I see the confusion but the defense hone is orange, with attack being red and life being green.
oh my fucking god... i've owned the game for months now and clocked in nearly 450 hours into it and my skull was thick enough not to realize it's R+X on that first guard point and keep trying to do it with R+A, even after watching this video and the tutorial several times... i facepalmed a little hard when i noticed...
Thank you for the video for it has helped me immensely. However, I can't seem to know when to pull back the c-stick and press x to cancel the ultra. I believe you'd understand to why I can't simply just keep charging to get ultra and fail which would result in me charging the blade again. Again, thank you.
By idle does that mean not moving at all? Or can you still do it if you're running? Cuz I noticed you were actually moving a couple times when you GPed. Or did you just let go of the C-pad before you get hit? Useful video by the way :)
I sometimes messed up when I pressed the R first. I've been practice a lot in demo. I can do GP so well when I fough goa magara, but when it comes to other monsters... well I need to practice more. lol.
yeah it takes practice for sure. I still need a lot of practice doing super instead of ultra from a GP, which is the most important skill to have for high level play with GP. LOL
for that move, I can do it easily with holding down (depend on direction of your character facing) the analog and tapping X. btw, nice tutorial, keep up the good work!
While i was training GP against molten tigrex i noticed that my weapon's sharpness dropped when i blocked using GP, but i read that by using GP weapon's sharpness does NOT drop.. am i missing something?
Thanks for the video. For the times that you're running around in shield and sword mode and do guard points out of the blue, is that just standing still and R+X?
Great video. I have a question about the super after GP. I found that the direction of the super can be changed after you pressing down+X. What's the correct timing ? I jus can't do it....
Hmm, my question is... do I need guard boost skill then?; the skill that allows unblockable attacks to become blockable....? or does that guard boost for CB build that in?
Do you have any secifics on Guard Point in Monster Hunter World (with or without Iceborne)? Usefulness of Guard skill, attacks that cannot/ should not be guarded, good practice "partners", et c.?
First of all, I love you, second of all I have two questions 1) does simply using R from idle when monster coming head on give GP? 2) how do you do super as your third A attack with shield being charged?
in order to perform a guard point, you MUST use the frames of animation with the shield in front of you during transformations, simply blocking doesn't work. it's really more of a "parry" than anything else. As for how to perform the super instead of the ultra discharge burst, you have to hold back on the control stick and press X during the part of the animation where the weapon is behind you, transforming and charging. Honestly, it takes some practice. I still can't really do it in the heat of the moment- timing is really tight.
SylemGistoe here's a tip that rly helped me. Charge your shield, just the shield. Now go to an empty area and try to do the super burst. If you mess up and do an ultra by accident then don't worry, since you have no philes it won't consume the shield buff and you can try again. Don't do it on monsters tho because it does literally no damage. I did this for a while and now I don't have a problem doing a super with a charged shield.
***** I've been reading a lot of comments on people accidentally blowing their ultra, but it's never happened to me. You can just spam back-tilt + x and it will never do ultra.
***** There's an option called "Orientation", if you pick Type 2 it'll read your inputs in relation to your character's direction. What this means is that down+X will always work no matter where your camera is.
Didnt know you could GP from idle. GP has always been hard to do for me since it was after a move but if it works just like eva its fine. All my sets have had eva1 since MHFU
gaijin hunter Until watching your video I always did GP from idle and found doing the x-swipe beforehand actually harder lmao. Maybe its my old evasion habits kicking in.
Probably a really noob question.... but how do you do the last part of the 3 hit combo WITHOUT it draining all your phials? Obviously it doesnt do it when you havent got the red axe (not sure what else to call it), but when i have the red axe and do it, it gets rid of all my phials and reverts my axe to normal. I just saw you do it...and it does none of those things..you still have some phials and axe power.... help
Hey gaijin, any hints on when to press the buttons, swear no matter what i cant GP, always end up morphing to axe or just nothing. Also, is there any other way to cancel out of ultra? like if enemy moves, can wither just do a super, or add to shield
just a quick question to all who can answer. Does the Charge Axe Burst/Boost Mode Slam Does any damage? Meaning, do the power geysers do extra damage. Also, do anyone know a good website for the damage charts for each weapon?
Whow how do you go from GP to Super/Ultra burst? When I do it, i usually do x+a it'll do a shield stab, then x+a again to super/ultra. In your vids, it just goes from GP to Super/Ultra.
gaijin hunter , does auto guard affect guard points? because i seem to lose a tonne of sharpness even when timing right?(i know i should hvae chucked it a while ago, but i accidentally melded my good talisman)
Looking at the defensive side of the Guard Points. Is the Guard Point a stronger guard than a regular one? Let's say I have no Guard skills and the shield is charged, so my shield has now the properties of a Lance (Guard +1); if I defend using a Guard Point would it be equivalent to idk Guard +1,5 for example?
Hey Gaijinhunter, I would like to know which CB path you think is better for impact, Im currently doing rathalos but the brachydios/black guard paths seem better
Hey Gaijinhunter I know you've seen Chris' CB videos and was wondering if you noticed him doing two shield checks in a row at times and if so, do you know how to do it?
Hi i was planning on maining bow this time. i was wondering if it can Keep up damage wise with the top melee weapons. If a Monster is trapped would i still do the damage of a CB or DB user assuming booth of us were hitting the head?
I'm still fairly new to the Monster Hunter series, and so I'm not too keen on advanced techniques. My question is, what exactly is the purpose of using guard points as opposed to blocking normally?
When you block normally ( R button ) you lose sharpness for each attack blocked and eventually lowering sharpness causing you to use a whetstone. But GP is a tactic that doesn't let you lose sharpness at all, while keeping the blocking ability. It's a tough trick but very worthwhile once you master it.
You can deal KO damage to the head with a successful guard point. It also lets you go directly into various counter attacks. If you press X after guard pointing you do a morph into axe attack. If you press X+A you will do a super burst axe attack that can be "canceled" into a quicker ultra burst by holding Down + X.
***** Yes whenever you do the super burst you can press X and holding down to get the ultra burst, always great if you see you are going to miss, because you waste less time and phials and get to keep the shield charge.
Hi Gaijinhunter, just wanna ask, how do you change the super attack when on shield bosst mode.. when I'm on shield boost mode, my super always using the ultimate which is deplete my shield boost and all my phials.. so how can I do normal super (1 phial) on shield boost mode?
Wait, so by successfully using a guard point you hit the monster with a single phial burst only or does it deal some extra damage to the monster? Also, how would this work for elemental CBs, like if you guard a roar would the monster take random fire damage even if you didn't hit them directly?
Hi gaijin! I'm wondering what charge blade you're using against molten tigrex. It looks like the rathalos one, but it has gold on one side. Is it the final form of Axelion Blade?
+Oreolistening? Oreosure? you might be hittin R first which gives you no guard point. you need to hit x first. it's very slight but if you hit R first it will be guard to axe which has no moment for a guard point.
+comedyfan1095 Yes I found out that you're correct. I am doing it right, but it's not the easiest way to guard point. I have to press X then R a split second. Now I can guard point. Thank you for clarifying!
As a beginner to MH4U, I feel like these videos will help me so very much and definitely thank you for making them! Level 4 now, level 100 tomorrow!

you can practice on caravan though. Slightly easier but it's similar to G

Thanks a lot for the explanation, Buri13.
idk I might be wrong but 1 guard point blocks consecutive attacks like seregios 's happy feet combo
This is where all start before the Famous Guard point on MHGU/MHXX
Load up can be great too. Once you get the barrage earring it's easy to get and with charged shield that's two extra phials....
For impact charge blades artillery can be useful too.
Hey, just noticed when practicing, you don't need to combo to guardpoint from sword to axe, if you tap and release X and R very quickly (its a bit easier if you hit X first, then R, but its still gotta be like with a few frames), it will result in the delayed switch, also, pressing the kick button the on the touch screen when in sword mode also results in a guard point switch.
Mitchell Osborne Wait nvm, you said that already, duh.
Hi, Gaijin!
I really love your tutorials. They are awesome :)
Well, two things:
1) I used to miss the Super EAD (instead Ultra EAD), but a friend discovered something really nice: you can change in menu>options>orientation and set to "type 2".
GPs are different than regular blocking since:
1. You won't lose sharpness
2. You won't consume stamina
3. You can counter attack
If the axe's charged then the shield will burst dealing extra damage (not sure if ko or the same as the cb's phials).
SZJerkXVI Where are you people getting your info? GP isn't some magical block. You do lose sharpness.
ํAll of your videos are very useful. I really love charge blade. Thank you Gaijin hunter.
Did you know that pressing select puts you in a guard point. I've been using it since it came out a just found out.
OHHHHHHH LOL U HAVE TO PRESS X FIRST!!!! I GOT IT NOW! missed it because it goes by sooo fast.
you're the best Gaijin hunter xD keep up the good work !
I gave the CB a quick go, I just couldn't get my head round it, it's a pretty confusing weapon.
This is just what the Dr. ordered. Thanks!
What combo did you use to charge your shield at 5:30? I saw the axe for a brief second, then you pulled the sword back out and had the shield loaded... it has something to do with the shelling i guess...
I didn't know GP until I saw this video, it's been 50hrs using CB.
So that's why I accidentally blocked some attacks while morphing
Practicing GP took me few hours to get used to it while doing actual hunts
I just use the special button to GP, it's really nice like that, no chance of accidentaly guarding.
oh wow, i hadn't even thought of that, that's a super good idea!
Special button?
chernabogs scythe is an amazing charge blade and i use guard points all the time with it, reccomended for all hunters because its easy to get and you can get it early in g rank too
Nice Guide! My English is very poor, but I could learn about GP.
your Movie is very good! Thank you!
One day, I shall ascend to the level that is Chris-senpai.
Guard point isn't active on frame 1 of idle sword mode unsheathed to X + R, is it?
Aaron Care I've been playing non-stop since I made that comment, and I've learned a lot of things including guard point since then, thank you for taking the time to explain it though :]
superleetninja No problem :]
at 2:32 ,its not hit you from the side ,it just you press R too soon
Press R+X at the same time is a lot harder than the timing to GP for me, so I just use Start button instead.
(You can also use the kick action button, typically the START button or the touch pad, to do morph attack with gp frames.)
You can visually see the difference because the morph attack with gp has longer animation time compared to the gp-less morph attack.
Isn't Guard+2 "Greatly increases the likelihood of standing your ground when blocking an attack." and not a guarantee guts ( I thought it was used to be called survival) which prevents fainting only one time, and not everytime u get OHKO with hp at 60%
He hasn't had his morning coffee yet lol
hi gaijin, in minute 4:55 you done a Super discharge after block. im pressing R to block then X+A and i cant do super discharge.
im doing something wrong? you recomend me guard+2 or something? i have hg earplugs, honed blade, challenger +2, razor sharp.
Thanks
António Barbosa You cant do it with regular blocking
I think you just convinced me to play Charge Blade.
***** when GP activates you do blast damage if i remember correctly and if it's on the face it does KO/Elemental damage. so yeah it does actively do damage back to the monster when you block. that's why guard point is such a strong thing to master.
comedyfan1095 Impact not blast.
***** right, i typed the wrong thing
That specific CB though has to upgrade like over 10 times :O
on 5:20.. i saw using ultra without turning to shield to normal(still ur shield is yellow). how to do that? :D
Im quite sure R+A doesnt do anything though? Oh well.
+Adlan Raid (super late reply just cus) X+A with Yellow or Red aura on the phials charges them (Yellow=3 Red=5) You need phials to charge your Shield.
Thank you for the video for it has helped me immensely. However, I can't seem to know when to pull back the c-stick and press x to cancel the ultra. I believe you'd understand to why I can't simply just keep charging to get ultra and fail which would result in me charging the blade again. Again, thank you.
Helpful video as always, gaijin. Btw can you tell us what armor and skill (besides guard +)
you using when fighting molten please?
Hello sir. Could you put the buttons needed to press at the description? Like GP on axe and sword mode. I always forget something really fast. Lol.
Anyone know of another charge blade channel besides the one mentioned? I want to see more guard points.
Can anyone tell me the reason why people have book of combos with them in the field rather than their storage box?
LOL
for that move, I can do it easily with holding down (depend on direction of your character facing) the analog and tapping X. btw, nice tutorial, keep up the good work!
gaijin hunter yeah, I was going to say how do you do super instead of wasting all those phials?
so hard for me to master this sadly T^T
Hey Gaijin Hunter, does anyone know the damage value of the phial explosion of a charged shield gp and shield thrust?
Can you do this to Shah Dalamadurs massive flame breath attack?
While i was training GP against molten tigrex i noticed that my weapon's sharpness dropped when i blocked using GP, but i read that by using GP weapon's sharpness does NOT drop.. am i missing something?
So do you only get the defensive benefits from the Shield Boost by using gp, or do normal blocks also improve with the boost?
you get the boost with normal blocks but GP also get a small increase even over that.
Thanks I wasn't clear on that.
Are you going to cover optimal damage for this weapon? Love to see it
Hmm, my question is... do I need guard boost skill then?; the skill that allows unblockable attacks to become blockable....? or does that guard boost for CB build that in?
Is if i have artillery god and bombardier skill actice...how much dmg am i doing wth a chrge blade
Do you have any secifics on Guard Point in Monster Hunter World (with or without Iceborne)?
Usefulness of Guard skill, attacks that cannot/ should not be guarded, good practice "partners", et c.?
First of all, I love you, second of all I have two questions
1) does simply using R from idle when monster coming head on give GP?
2) how do you do super as your third A attack with shield being charged?
in order to perform a guard point, you MUST use the frames of animation with the shield in front of you during transformations, simply blocking doesn't work. it's really more of a "parry" than anything else. As for how to perform the super instead of the ultra discharge burst, you have to hold back on the control stick and press X during the part of the animation where the weapon is behind you, transforming and charging. Honestly, it takes some practice. I still can't really do it in the heat of the moment- timing is really tight.
This is me a lot of times. Lol
*****
There's an option called "Orientation", if you pick Type 2 it'll read your inputs in relation to your character's direction. What this means is that down+X will always work no matter where your camera is.
Didnt know you could GP from idle. GP has always been hard to do for me since it was after a move but if it works just like eva its fine. All my sets have had eva1 since MHFU
yeah the opportunities more than triple once you add idle GP to your arsenal. there's just not enough time to always do an X swipe beforehand.
gaijin hunter Until watching your video I always did GP from idle and found doing the x-swipe beforehand actually harder lmao. Maybe its my old evasion habits kicking in.
gaijin hunter Can't you perform idle GP if you use special attack button?
Probably a really noob question.... but how do you do the last part of the 3 hit combo WITHOUT it draining all your phials? Obviously it doesnt do it when you havent got the red axe (not sure what else to call it), but when i have the red axe and do it, it gets rid of all my phials and reverts my axe to normal. I just saw you do it...and it does none of those things..you still have some phials and axe power.... help
gaijin hunter Do you have your Dokododo set with a different helm? the Dalamadur helm ish ugly in my female hunter.
Does gp in MHW follow the same principles? Like damaging a monster or stunning after the gp?
yes
When's the earliest you can fight the Molten Tigrex? I need to upgrade my Seregios equipment and I only need the Molten Tigrex parts to do it.
I can infer that they do due to the skill artillery novice that reads "increase dmg of charge blade impact phials"
Whow how do you go from GP to Super/Ultra burst? When I do it, i usually do x+a it'll do a shield stab, then x+a again to super/ultra. In your vids, it just goes from GP to Super/Ultra.
I think X+A from a guard can trigger Super/Ultra Burst. At least that's what the CB video said.
gaijin hunter , does auto guard affect guard points? because i seem to lose a tonne of sharpness even when timing right?(i know i should hvae chucked it a while ago, but i accidentally melded my good talisman)
Definitely not, but the advantage of a bow is being able to deal damage from a safer range reliably when a monster is NOT trapped/stunned/paralyzed.
Oh nice, I didn't know it negated the sharpness loss. That makes it worthwhile indeed
Joey Boom Yeah, it's too bad I suck at it though. I guess it'll just take more practice lol.
Hi Gaijinhunter,
just wanna ask, how do you change the super attack when on shield bosst mode..
when I'm on shield boost mode, my super always using the ultimate which is deplete my shield boost and all my phials..
so how can I do normal super (1 phial) on shield boost mode?
nvm.. you already explained on the other vid.. thanks. :D
Ciwen Gao link pls
jake saquisame you can search on his video, Charge Blade tutorial.. they explain it all on there..
is the window to guard different in mh4u than in world? because it seems that way
I've killed monsters and broken parts with guard points. But how much damage do guard points/phial bursts do?
Use the especial attack to make a GP, is waay more easy
Do guard points work on every monster? Is is vital to master them? I am trying out the CB. I used to use the glaive. Completely different play style.
Wait, so by successfully using a guard point you hit the monster with a single phial burst only or does it deal some extra damage to the monster? Also, how would this work for elemental CBs, like if you guard a roar would the monster take random fire damage even if you didn't hit them directly?
6:15 insert to be continued meme
Does the cb has to be a impact phial one to stun the monster with gp or elemental phial ones also stun?
why do you gp if you're in sns mode? can't you just block it or is the gp block better?
Hi gaijin!
I'm wondering what charge blade you're using against molten tigrex.
It looks like the rathalos one, but it has gold on one side.
Is it the final form of Axelion Blade?
ThePixelPancake It's the Rathalos one indeed
Its the propensity blade final upg of the axellion blade
I don't understand. I'm doing it correctly and it results in failure. It only works if I slash and THEN morph to axe. Am I doing something wrong?
+Oreolistening? Oreosure? you might be hittin R first which gives you no guard point. you need to hit x first. it's very slight but if you hit R first it will be guard to axe which has no moment for a guard point.
+comedyfan1095 Yes I found out that you're correct. I am doing it right, but it's not the easiest way to guard point. I have to press X then R a split second. Now I can guard point. Thank you for clarifying!
Oreolistening? Oreosure? no problem. happy hunting.
so essentially GP is r+x? I mean that's kinda what I was picking up so if I do anything I can basically cancel into GP at the appropriate time?
If you do r first then bad hunter!
Mfw I press r + x and press r a fraction of a second earlier than x. Edit: The delay it takes my finger to hit xr actually makes me gp properly lol
