Pop told me when I was 8 years old, you don’t carry a pistol around until you have a couple hundred rounds through it with different types of ammunition without any failures.
Actually the first thing you should do is, disassemble it, then hoppes number 9 solvent every part, wipe dry, oil heavily, then re-assemble it. The lubricants they put on it at the factory tend to dry out.
I agree partially. Bore solvent should only be used to clean the barrel (inside). It is too harsh for the other parts of the gun. Make sure all solvent is removed after cleaning (it is essentially acid). Damage can be done to the sights (especially tritium night sights) and the grips (especially wood or soft rubber grips). Do NOT heavily oil the gun! Apply only the amount of oil needed to high friction areas. What's better to use is high quality gun grease. It should not evaporate anywhere near as fast as oil. Whether you use grease, oil or a combination, remember not to overuse. This will cause oil to splash back onto you, your face, your clothing, your hands. It will also attract dirt, sand and dust which may cause malfunctioning of the weapon. Happy shooting ya'll!
You should do this also so you can get even more familiar with your particular firearm.....this video is more directed to new shooters so yeah...shoot the crap out of the gun, clean and disassemble it, but not only are you testing to see if the gun works, but testing to see if you can even shoot with any level of accuracy....pistol shooting is far harder than people think. I kind of liken it to fighting...most guys think they can go kick ass but have never been in a fight and/or have never trained...they'll quickly realize they don't know what the hell to do...same with handgun shooting...it's quite a bit more difficult than you think it is...to be able to shoot it accurately and efficiently anyway.
Yes, very true. ALWAYS clean the bore as well. I've discovered minor debris in the bore in at least a quarter of the guns I have bought over the years.
I'm brand new to firearms and the first thing I did was read the manual and watched videos on how to field strip my pistol. Purchased the gun brought it home, field stripped it, cleaned it, lubed it (Balistol) and then went to range and put 100 rounds down range. Purchased an FPC recently and did the same and have put 500 rounds through that so far. Great advice, have to know how it works and ensure the ammo will work with the firearm by putting rounds down range. Love your videos sir!
One humbling experience for me was going to a all Day tactical weapons class where you actually have to move and shoot at the same time and instantly on the first drill , I realized that I had never done this before and to make matters worse my Son-N-Law a USMC Iraq Veteran had signed us up for the advance tactical training course and every other participant was either ex-military / Police-ex military or for hire contractor the only other two non-military where doctors and had already taken the course multiple times and constantly attended to stay sharp ! So, I was the class clown with zero experience at moving and shooting and although I did start to get the hang of it by the end of the Day it was truly a humbling experience and strongly encourage anyone that has never had advanced field training to find a good instructor and start with the intro course !
That sounds fun. 🎉 I prob should find one near me. Rocked a course at my club years back with a ductwork you had to alternate shooting through the tube and then above it. Everyone before me kept sticking the pistol into the tube before shooting 🤷♂️

Chad, I have really taken your messages to heart. Actively training with my equipment everyday. My skills are getting sharper everyday and I have you (and others) to thank for the motivation to be as dangerous as I possibly can. Thank you sir, you are much appreciated!
Yep, right on point! I knew a guy who had an extensive gun collection (especially pistols) and he was constantly complaining about how NONE of his pistols would shoot good groups and he was frustrated. One day I got tired of him bitching about it and when he asked me why I only had two pistols I told him, look man, I have these because they fit my hand and are dependable and I have thousands of rounds fired through each them down range. You on the other hand have over twenty pistols and maybe a hundred rounds down range dicking around. It ain't the pistols brother it's you! THE NUT BEHIND THE BUTT!!!
NOV 10, 1775. Happy Birthday USMC. Semper Fi ! Also, Armistice Day originally celebrated our living Veterans of WW1. We salute all Veterans and thank them for their unselfish service .
Years ago, I bought a really nice pistol. Took it to the range and it kept jamming. Had to send it back to the factory. They polished the ramp that feeds the bullets into the barrel. Worked great after that.👍😎
I had a Glock 23 mag spring break and didn't know it was the magazine spring causing jams until I got home later, fixed it and haven't had a single jam since btw now my rotation is a gen 4 Glock 31 full size, has worked well Bottleneck Cartridges .357Sig feeds really good
Buy a good gun, good ammo and factory mags. Invest in training and practice with a good, concealable and comfortable holster. Shooting is a perishable skill. Thanks Frogman !!
Chad you are so right!! This just happened to me. I had an M&P Shield M2.0 that I had fired many times. Then I upgraded to the Shield Plus and began carrying it before firing it. Went to the range with it finally, and it fired the first round but then jammed. Then it mis-fired (weak pin strike) and jammed again. After this I was able to clear the chamber and fire off a few successfully, and it worked great the rest of the day. But I was shocked and realized that I had been carrying this thing for weeks believing that it would just work, when in fact, it would have most likely failed me when I needed it most. Thank you for this video, and for ALL of your videos. Very educational, informative and inspiring.
One thing to add, be sure to shoot the ammo that you are going to be carrying. FMJ versus hollow points can experience different FTF / FTE depending on the gun / ammo combo. Your weapon may feed bulk ammo but not defensive purpose ammo.
yep.. i had a srpingfield xds in 45 that would shoot every bullet under the sun EXCEPT lawman hollow points. all my other 45s shoot it nicely but something on the ramp it wouldnt feed it
As a pistol instructor and the manager of a gun store, I can attest to this. Literally 90% of people will purchase a gun and immediately rely on/carry it for weeks, months or even years without ever shooting it. In a basic safety class I was running, this older gentleman brought his wheel gun from his nightstand drawer where it had been resting loaded without being touched for about 30 years. The ammo in the cylinder was so corroded that we couldnt even get them out of the cylinder. SMH
God bless our Heros God has given us as our protectors and leaders, fathers, husbands brothers, and friends. Love you all. Forever thankful! God knows! In Christ, We will go standing when God calls and God alone until then we are the blessed and beloved because we love Him back. Stay strong, stay courageous, and there are many many many always praying for you all out there. To all out there: Dont let the devil win. We have the power in One Name: Jesus Christ! Say it out loud, and evil runs! Amen!
I like to field strip it, run a few patches through the barrel, and fire at least 50 rounds. One of my favorite shotguns jammed first time shooting had to send it to be repaired. New to your channel Chadd nice topic to consider. Happy Birthday to the USMC!
Correct ✅️ I buy a NIB gun, clean, use a degreaser or Simple Green. Go over the barrel, mags. After that; add some CLP like Clenzoil, Slip 2000 EWL. Ballistol is good too, gun cleaning 🇩🇪.
Like you I am military trained and have seen all sorts of crazy things. Last 9mm I bought went straight to the range and I put over 200 rounds through it. Since I bought a couple extra mags I made sure every mag would properly seat and had enough spring tension to feed properly. 200 rounds told me a lot about the gun and then I field stripped, cleaned and reassembled. Doing that prevents issues down the road. Like the channel. The Chief
This is extremely good advice for people looking to get a new firearm or people who are new to guns. My EDC has been the same for 10 years and ive put well over 4,000 rounds through it. It goes everywhere i go. Basically my best friend.
Just bought a new firearm on Halloween. A Springfield Hellcat. I’m a 63 year old female. I’ve been to the outdoor range 3 times, and I’m getting used to it. I’ve disassembled it 4 times, to get it embedded in my memory, cleaned it up a bit, and oiled it with Hoppes 9, rubbed it around, and cleaned off with cotton patches. It was really dry. Especially the spring area. My right bicep was so sore for two days after. lol I love the size for my small size hands. I’m still buying different variations of holsters, belts, and tactical bags, trying to find the right one to be comfortable with. Thanks for the video. You nailed it. You have to become familiar with what you’ve bought.
Hoppes #9 should mostly be used to clean the bore and exterior of the barrel. There are other products to lubricate or “oil” metal to metal or places that experience friction.
Great advice. My gun was used, but the advice is still good. First thing I did was read the manual and learn how to use it and maintain it. Spent many days with it using "snap caps", familiarizing myself with its mechanics, and could "field strip" it and reassemble it with my eyes closed, behind my back, very quickly. (Didn't own any ammo yet). Read Massad Ayoob's _In The Gravest Extreme_ among others. Went to the range. Went to class.Etc.
NOPE! New toy means I gotta go pew pew it. Good reason to work on some drills. Happy Veterans day! Happy B-Day to the Marines. Thanks for your service Chadd.
Good tip Chadd and the second thing you do.....clean your weapon. Learn how to break it down and reassemble. Don't assume it's clean and properly lubricated coming from the store.
I just had this conversation with my brother-in-law, he is carrying a 380 with ball ammo never been fired, cleaned or anything. We went out cleaned it, lubed it and went straight to the range. Great info.
Good advise, I would add that It wouldn't hurt to swab the barrel bore out as well.Ive seen many a new gun ,rifles and handguns, with stuff in the bore. Happy Vets Day.
Pistols, rifles and shotguns apply. New TS-12 FTE causing live round to bypass feed ramp and enter frame of gun under the feed ramp, jamming everything. Great lesson in disassembly and finding the ammo it will eat.

Chad, i started getting my "War Box" ready. From one veteran to another: thank you for your service to country. I do appreciate your great knowledge and advice.
You are right on Chad. I bought my daughter a smith and Wesson .22 compact to shoot and learn with and we went to shoot it that day and it would fire one round and then not fire and kept doing this. I tore it down and the firing pin spring was missing. Also I bought my wife one of those smith and Wesson ez .380 and the spring rod is plastic, I ended up machining a steel rod to replace it with and it works good now. These two reasons are why I bought myself a H&K VP9SK and went through it. I put a wolf 3lb. Trigger on it and a quick take down door on the rear of the slide to access the firing pin. You have to have a good functioning pistol at all times like Chad says. Let’s go!!!
I think you might be referring to the M&P shield ez cambered in .380. This gun is absolutely a marvel in engineering. My wife is small and pretty weak and can operate this gun like a champ. No jams ever. I highly recommend that for weak handed ppl, handicapped ect. Love the truck talks
I just bought my wife the same gun in 9mm. I added an aftermarket smaller aluminum grip safety. She shot it at the range last week and it worked out great.
Bought a Ruger lcrx 22 magnum last year, and had so many problems within the first hundred rounds I sent it back to the factory. Ruger’s gunsmith called me from Vermont to tell me they would replace it with any model lcrx they made, but he didn’t recommend getting another 22 mag. They sent me a new lcrx in .327 magnum. She’s a real fire breather, but she never lies, and works flawlessly.
I clean and oil it, mount the optic if I already have one for it. Sight it in and then do a few drills including some mag dumps. It's hard for me to understand how someone would buy a gun and not be itching to get on the range immediately, especially if it's for carry. That's just all kinds of insane to carry something that hasn't even been fired once.
Wow I have a friend who does that he took his new gun out to shoot after 2 yrs sitting and it does not fire right but no warranty left now. I take mine home clean the bore tear it down to the basics and check everything, then take it to the range and of course I have at least 1000 rounds of ammo as well as enough components to load 2 to 3k rounds for each caliber whenever I want. I never took a gun to carry without knowing everything about the gun including 1 500 round test fire.
100% Agree. Not only do they need to break in more often than not, but all of the sudden when an ejector pin that is mass produced grows wings out of the blue; whatcha gonna do? Can't wait till its go time.
☝Just picked my new first weapon today, 10th. Im getting an appointment with a tactical training company. Then practice, practice, practice at another place. Looking forward to have the knowlege to know what the heck I am doing. Lol. My Dad was U.S. Marine, Korean War and WW2. Died from ptsd effects. My Grandpa worked began working in the Coal mines of Ohio when he was 9 yrs old, til he joined Army went to Germany for WW1. I was born on an Air Force Base in the 50's. So my first question for the Tac Tainer is, do i gotta oil my weapon before the first shoot out-of-gate⁉️ For pete's sakes‼️🙄🙄🙄
I used to act like Chili does, I thought their was no way back, so I attended therapy. The therapist suggested mild to moderate water boarding and then I joined the military. He fixed me right up!
You’re right man. I’ve been carrying a Glock 43x for months now without shooting the damn thing. I assumed since I’ve owned a few Glocks that it would work. That’s unacceptable though. Thanks for making this video.
I ALWAYS take it apart, replace the MIM parts with forged parts, polish all mating parts and clean and lube, THEN re-assemble and carry IWB and dry fire- practicing my draw stroke, tac mag reloads, trigger control, and general manipulations. Then take it out and do various drills, with a timer
Sometimes these guns come with a heavy manufacturing grease on them to prevent rust on long term storage. This needs to be stripped off, cleaned and oiled to work at top performance. Love ya Chad. Thank you.
I run 800 rounds thru each handgun I buy without cleaning. Then I clean and go thru several different kinds of 124+p to see which ammo the gun likes. Just got back from the range today sighting in a rifle. Nothing like driving home with the smell of gunpowder floating around yourself lol
Preach brother.

Let’s go!!!
Yes sir you caught me, I’m doing that right this minute. Tomorrow I’m gonna go to the county range. Thank you for the wake up call
Exactly!! Same thing happened to me with my SA Ronin. I’m in the promos of working with my Beretta APX A1 compact.
My wife has the 9mm EZ and it has performed flawlessly for a year. Eats everything not one malfunction.
@@doctorgeneral4239 awesome!! keep going to the range!
This is good advice. But I'd add the same for your carry ammo. Always put a couple boxes of your carry ammo through your gun.
Happy vets day . And facts. So many people never fire their guns b4 they carry
I get around all this by manufacturing my own weapons (from scratch). I have my own machine shop.
Thank you for what you do. And Thank you for being a VETERAN.
Thanks for your service
100% Agree. Not only do they need to break in more often than not, but all of the sudden when an ejector pin that is mass produced grows wings out of the blue; whatcha gonna do? Can't wait till its go time.
Thank you for your sevice...god bless our veterans. Love the chili video..lol
100% agree 👍
Have bought several that did not work
Sound advice. Hope more folks listen
Love you guys. Thank you.
Learned that from, "The Ghost and the Darkness" when Remington said, "You went into battle with an unproven rifle?!"
😎 crucial yet common sense. Thanks!
