Check the crowd, all those empty spaces and I think this was the match on the ICF programme. Not everything was great back then, many things but not everything.
I'd choose the games of the 70s and 80s every time,....muddy pitches, hardtackling,...warm beer, grounds had their own charm and quirkiness and identity,...now they are soulless bowls without any real character or atmosphere.........now the game is so money obssessed,.ruined by agents and mercenary greedy players,.....no the game may be awash with money,...but it's definitely not a better spectacle
@pbr streetgang Of course you're right in so many ways but if you have kids today would you have been very happy with them going away to Millwall, watching a match in the stand at Bradford, and many others,or a semi-final at Hillsborough?I think,if the will existed,we could have decent atmposphere at games today with safe standing and owners who cared about their fans and didn't just want to squeeze them as "customers."I,too, preferred the game in my youth but it had many bad aspects.
Got to love the Cobblers's Bukta kit, with its flappy collar and nipple chafing material. While Villa and several others had flashy V-collar and thin material, Northampton valiantly battle on with a kit supplier who were making designs for future TOFFSco products....
Interesting camera angle at 39.30 seeing the old Sixfields revealing the empty 4th side of the ground, which was, in fact, a cricket ground as well. Cameras never showed this side.
@@mrkipling2201 Yes I felt Frank`s legs were going around 1986 so he never stood a chance with Fergie, But Frank`s goals vs Everton 83, Barcelona 84, Anfield away 85 will go down in United Folklore!
Two All First Division FA Cup 3rd round ties, the ITV regions had the better games that weekend, showing Derby 2 Notts Forest 0, Charlton Ath 2 Ipswich Town 3 & Blackburn 1 Liverpool 2 (TT showed Sunderland v Manchester City which was 0-0)
Went to the Blackburn game, was just 10 years old. My old man was a Liverpool lad, me a rovers fan, I didn't speak to him all the way home :D Been trying to find highlights, thanks for mentioning it was only ITV regions. I'll keep trying...
remarkably good pitch at Northampton for february, especially when you compare it to the mudbath at Old Trafford. I remember that Mark walters goal, classy player he was, great first touch. It's a shame that english football is dead now, sold out little by little once Sky got the exclusive rights and all the sheep followed and bought their satellite dishes. Owned and played by foreigners now so no longer representing their communties, diving all the time, ultra light beach ball, human chess pieces moved by foreign managers and coaches, seems that german managers are the latest fashion, can't watch it anymore. Money changes everything.
Alan Devonshire young and with a head of hair !! See him at Maidenhead these days where he's the manager, he looks like a "Get orff of my land" farmer with a flat cap and worn out jacket and pants ! Strangely for a footballer (of any era) he doesn't drive. Does a great job at Maidenhead though.

That's a sad story. Brian Clough will always be the greatest manager in the history of football ⚽️ (in my opinion) but so much credit has to go to Peter Taylor for his scouting genius. Together they were unstoppable and the first 2 people to do it as a duo. They invented the assistant manager role 😎⚽️❤️
I loved big Ron but I don't think he was a good coach. by saying that I think you know what I mean. Champagne and Charlie are words that come to mind and the words not necessarily joined up. With the team we had we should have won the league..
Thanks for sharing this; memories of watching MOTD with my dear old Dad who passed away last year. Thank you!
When the fa cup was held in high esteem.
The good old days of match of the day before money and foreign investors ruined football as we knew it....miss those days

@@suffern63 This isn't the ICF programme match, but something did happen in United Road that day.
The football kits in the 80s are so much better than todays …like the football too !
Nice when teams full of British players, better atmosphere, better times, wish our country could still be like it was
distantvoices very true. I can’t even pronounce most of the players names now. Yet it’s supposed to be English football.
If you don’t like it leave.
Better hooligans too….
Blame all the governments since the late 70’s who’ve had their own agenda for that !

Early to mid 70's footie was the best!!
This football is very tame by comparison.
Such a shame we lost Steve coppell basically at his peak.
Tragic that!
mcbrando it certainly was. Playing career over at 28.
West Ham did not fancy it at all, And What a stupendous goal from Frank Stapleton!
mcbrando scored some important goals but fergie felt he was getting too old. Hence the decision to sell him to Ajax in the summer of 1987.

Ah the good old days before money ruined the game. Football was far more special and exciting in the old days. Never to return unfortunately.
Totally agree. Fa cup spoiled now. No one cares. But as a leicester fan, it was great to win it for the first time.
What a wonderful team man united were to watch then. Its like swarming red tide
Good old days. 1980-83, we used to meet at the student cafeteria (Salford University) to watch the MOTD.
34:11 Great to see an old fashioned crowd surge there. I'll never go to a match at one of today's soulless all-seater stadiums.
A police inspector moonlighting as a referee... They were the days, the days when the police got even less done than today.

Northampton Town playing at the old County Ground and getting just over 17K in terms of supporters. Now, you're lucky if you see 5 to 6K at Sixfields.
