Singapore, officially known as the Republic of Singapore, is an island country and city-state located in maritime Southeast Asia. It’s situated about one degree of latitude (137 kilometers or 85 miles) north of the equator, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.
Singapore’s territory comprises one main island, 63 satellite islands and islets, and one outlying islet. The combined area of these has increased by approximately 25% since the country’s independence as a result of extensive land reclamation projects. Despite having the second-highest population density in the world, Singapore is known for its numerous green and recreational spaces thanks to urban planning.
Singapore is a multicultural city with four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil. English is the lingua franca, used exclusively in numerous public services. The city is also known as the “Lion City” or “Garden City” for its many parks and tree-lined streets.
Economically, Singapore’s strategic position on the strait between the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, complemented by its deepwater harbor, has made it the largest port in Southeast Asia and one of the world’s greatest commercial centers. As of 2023, Singapore had an estimated GDP (PPP) of $753.273 billion and a per capita GDP of $133,107.
