'Not in Russia's interest' to start war with a NATO country, says Norway's PM • FRANCE 24 English

- Ahead of the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre gave an interview to FRANCE 24. The conflict has prompted warnings by senior Scandinavian defence officials about the threat of a war with Russia. Norway is a founding member of NATO, Finland joined the Alliance last year and Sweden is in the process of doing so. "I don't think it is in Russia's interest to engage war with a NATO country," the Norwegian premier told FRANCE 24. "But being part of NATO, being part of a collective security, we need to strengthen our capacity", he conceded.

They certainly were wrong this time. Russia drew a clear red line saying that Ukraine would never be allowed to join NATO. They thought that Putin would not be as determined as JFK was about his own red line in Cuba. The West was wrong.

It was not in Putin's interest to start Ukrainian war, it was not in Hamas interest to attack Israel, it was not in Saddam interest to Occupy Kuwait, etc All these people have/had different logic, don't put your own in there mind.
It's not in Russias interest to do a lot it has nevertheless gone ahead and mindlessly done.
For Russian “elites” it may be a win if they gain territory & are able to solidify further control over society, commoners lives aren’t important & may be something they don’t mind culling. There are plenty of ways for them to siphon more wealth from a degraded economy.

However, Russia is interested in starting a conflict with a NATO country with the aim of the dissolution of NATO. If Russia can somehow engage in warfare with a NATO country without art. 5 being applied, NATO is practically not a defensive alliance, and will disintegrate. NATO countries have to step up massively in Ukraine.
this begs the obvious question, is it then in NATO´s interest to do so? I highly doubt it!

We need to stop pretending that all societies/regimes think or act the same way as we do… heck a variety of thought & culture exists within “western” civilization. Particularly in the case of autocratic countries with State controlled media, a dangerous dynamic can surprise the “intellectuals”. If we fail to adequately support Ukraine, the entire globe along with ourselves will suffer, their will be repercussions, and accountability & reforms must occur regardless!

Russia is nowhere powerful as Soviet Union, but much more powerful than the cold war era China but today's China have become militarily and economically more powerful than the Soviet Union. Throughout the cold war US diplomacy have prevented the military union of the two reds (USSR and PRC), now the US diplomacy have failed terribly to prevent this relationship.

Per 15 january 144 billion pledged by EU Countries + EU Institutions, 40,6 billion by other countries not EU or US, 67,7 billion by US...Also has to be said that while EU send a lot of new equipment, new artillery systems etc due to sparse stockpiles, US send equipment claiming its worth is "billions" but that would've at best been scrap metal if not sent, if not only a burden to decomission and destroy

Sounds like Russia offered N Korea the chance to do some live combat testing of some of their weapon systems and the N Koreans wisely took advantage of this opportunity. Heads up to Japan and S Korea! Both countries need to watch how well the US Patriot systems deal with this threat cause if the PAC 3 ends up not very effective, Japan and S Korea will need to start re-thinking their ABM😅😅 defences

@@DurpThought Only because Norway is a much smaller coutry with fewer population. Poland spent the highest percentage of GDP on defence within NATO at 3.9% while Norway spent 1.6%
