As a 30-year owner of several different aircraft, my advice is to NEVER buy a $100,000 plane with $100,000. Instead, buy a $100,000 plane when you have $120,000, keeping $20,000 in reserve.

    • @YusssoM

This is also true for buying used cars and house too. You'll always need some more money to spend after your initial purchase.

@@BrainWearmouth personally, I've always banked 50% (so $50k), but that's just me. And I've used that $50k more times than not in the first year. $20k will just keep you flying at a basic level, with some deferred maintenance. $50k will handle most anything in the first year.

@@countryfence8111 Yeah that's more what I thought. I'd also imagine it varies from plane to plane? Newer/better condition is higher capital but less in reserve or cost of ownership?

Gosh dang it man, you're awesome. I've been wanting a plane my entire life. I recovered from homelessness and severe alcoholism a year ago not even close to having the $ for one at the moment, but having these videos Is super motivational. Not only are the graphics my favorite type of art style out there, the way you talk is like somebody giving purchasing advice IRL and its super enjoyable.
    Thank you!

  • @Orzorn

Its astounding how closely this lines up with my several years of "research" (read: longingly looking at planes on websites wishing I could one day buy one). Mooneys are simply too efficient to pass up, and Debonairs are not as sought after as their older brothers (sisters?) so they make for affordable yet stylish alternatives. Vikings, I would argue, do have some availability in the 65-80k price range with excellent avionics, but you have to look for a while. I saw one beautiful example go up on TradeAPlane for 65k and get snatched up within the week. The challenge with the Viking is knowing who to go to for maintenance, especially with regards to the wooden wings.
Overall, I think if I was buying my first ever plane and going for a four seater cross country, manual gear Mooney M20C is as easy as it would get. Plentiful, well known maintenance regiment, and very efficient.

My only retractable time is in an M20C. I learned in Grumman Cheetahs but rented the M20C for a family reunion in Arkansas. Eleven hours of driving one way thanks to little country roads or 5.5 on the Hobbs there and back. It was a no brainer and I've loved those planes ever since. It was magical to get high enough on a summer day to need cabin heat after sweltering in hot Texas summers in that Grumman.
Sadly, despite giving my wife the irrefutable argument that you can live in a plane, but you can't fly a house, I'm a home owner. 😢

A very cool video with beautiful drawings, as in all your content. As a bit of an aviation geek, I'm a big fan of your channel. But there's one small mistake: the manufacturer of the Wilga is not "P2L" but PZL - Państwowe Zakłady Lotnicze (it means "State Aviation Works" in Polish). I love the look and practicality of a (larger, door-having) Velocity over a Cozy.. but the controls are sloppy (cable vs rods) and if you watch any videos of them landing.. they almost always hit hard. Cozys, like Long-EZs have some increased AoA at landing speed.. but the Velocities seem to need to be flown into the runway in a very shallow approach. If you look at Velocity landing videos, you'll only see a few squeakers (several of them are by Velocity test pilots), and a lot of pilots edit their landings out of their videos completely. I've been to a few canard fly-ins and you can see the same pattern in the pattern in person: Lots of Velocitys being slammed into the runway, while the Rutan & Puffer canards display much more graceful control. Cozys are very, well, cozy.. but that actually improves visibility since there's less plane under you, blocking your view of all the peasants on the ground.

I’m never going to have enough money to buy some stupid 100 year old 45 mph flying airplane! Why the hell is everything so expect!? All these planes are super small and old! I just don’t get how they are still so expensive!

many many years ago... at 6'4", 270lbs.. 16years old.. i accumulated my private, instrument and commercial ticket in my family's 84 M20k.. comfy? let's say snug.. but fast.. and so much fun to fly.. once in, it was somewhat comfy.. about that time we started building a Glasair II RG... when the Glasair was complete i was 20.. my dad sold the Mooney I had logged 600 hours in.. and I started flying the Glasair.. then Snug went to REALLY SNUG... but the fun factor went through the roof.. i didn't care that i had to pull the seat cushion out and my headset still hit the gullwing doors.. i didn't care that pulling full up elevator meant crushing my nuts.. I showed 360 knots over the ground riding the gulfstream on the way back from Vegas on my honeymoon.. i could do 220kts true.. INVERTED.. or pull back to 55% eco cruise and still do 165kts and sip 7gph... i agree that a Glasair isn't a good x-country platform... it's a GREAT one... you just cant bring a lot of stuff.. but it's got smile factor that makes you not even care.. you wanna carry a bunch of stuff long distance, take the PC-12... all you really need is your girl and a credit card anyway.. by the way after i got married, we tracked down the same Mooney our family had.. bought it back.. put another 1000 hrs on it.. a new engine, paint, interior, and a panel update.. by then it was time for something pressurized with air conditioning, more payload and range.. the evolution looked like this.. M20K, B-60 duke, C-414, 690B, C90, PC-12, C551, PC-12 again..

This must be paid for, no one would pick the Zenith as the best for anything. That threw me for a loop. Now I can not trust this channel. don't get me wrong I haveing against the Zenith but the best for BC is not even close for under 100k
