  • While on vacation one of the UNVR hard drives started to degrade, let's replace it and expand the storage!

I gave up with the Seagate Skyhawk drives. Built an 8 bay Synology NAS with them for Surveillance Station. 3 of them failed within the first year, 4th failed within 18 months, 2 of the replacement drives again failed within 12 months. Switched to WD Purple drives and had no issues.

Interesting, good to know, I did think it was odd that drive failed so soon, barely over a year old, if anymore fail thats probably the route I'll go.

Thanks the video ! I am currently using 2 disks (RAID1), I added a third one a few months ago, I wanted to use it as a hot spare but it won't let me do so without earasing the whole volume. Do you know if "hot spare" mode is only for 3+1 disks but not for 2+1 ? Thanks.

RAID 1 should let you have a hot spare (as per RAID guidelines), but not sure about UNVR implementation.
In theory you can have two hot spares for RAID 1, I do know however if you want to change from RAID1 to RAID5 you will need to rebuild the array as it stripes the data differently.

@@JenxTech yes. The UNVR wants to rebuild the array to add a hot spare : does not make sense to me to loose my data in order to protect it :D

@@aRndBelgianGuy yeah that doesn't sound right. That's annoying. Wondering if it wants to convert to RAID5. Best to ask on the ui support forum

I think I’m right in saying you used to be based in Devon? I’ve got a bit of an odd question. Do you have an email address or other social media that I could get in contact with you on?

I worked in Bristol, UK for a bit, then London for a few years before moving to the US. @chrisjenx on Twitter (X what ever it's called).
