I met Howard Cossel at the Steelers hotel later in 1979 when they were in San Diego for a MNF game. He was a very nice man, especially to all the kids who were there. He shook my three-year old son's hand, jokingly asked my son if he was a Steeler fan (he was wearing a Steelers' jogging outfit) and congratulated him for being a Steeler fan.

Gary Cristani it’s pretty sad when old grumps always whine about how football used to be. My friggen goodness. I’m a child of the 70s, but modern football is far more entertaining! Doesn’t mean that old school football is bad. But modern football is just the natural evolution of players and coaches trying to beat the schemes of the past... and it is more beautiful today than it ever was!
I bet I'm half your age bud, the NFL sucks right now. You're obviously an easily entertained rube. You seem like the type of guy who likes superbowl commercials.
I haven't watched the NFL in 5 years. First flag of the game comes in at 20:00. Modern games would have been 5 flags at this point....including a phantom roughing the passer
And hopefully players are safer as a result. How many of these players developed crippling CTE symptoms afterwards when people stopped paying attention to them?
What a time to be a sports fan in Pittsburgh. Pops and the Bucs had just beaten the Orioles in the World Series, and now MNF at Three Rivers during a fourth Super Bowl title run for The Steelers.
R Martin absolutely. In the ‘70s, the pirates won two World Series and were always contending for another pennant. I’d argue that the pirates were the team of the decade. What a time indeed!

First event at Three Rivers since Game 5 of the World Series, when the Pirates started their comeback from the 3-1 deficit before winning the last two games in Baltimore.
I was at that game too Eric. I do believe that was my first game as well. I remember earlier in the day watching the Steelers earlier in the day against the Bengals. Those were good times. I was in my mid-20's then, and MNF was a big deal. You get off work and see the Goodyear blimp hovering over your city, knowing the big game was in town, it was exhilarating. We had a crew that met up every Monday night, we'd play poker, watch the game, drink, and smoke. Great times. As you can see, the game was a lot different then, as were we all. 40 years later, I'm trying to enjoy it like I used to, but it's changed so much, the rules are FUBAR, it's just not the same.
Classic MNF. Back when teams had to earn the right to play in primetime, and we on the east coast struggled to stay awake past halftime with that 9pm start time.
I was born in 1966 so this was my early teens and before. MNF was only night and show I was allowed to stay up that late til halftime and my family didn't have cable thus the halftime highlights with Cosell was my absolute favorite n the last thing I watched. Great times
I watched another one of these '70s MNF games last week. A gazillion penalties. Got boring after awhile. And this game had plenty of laundry, too. Refs are refs, what's the big deal?
I had to watch this game in Black and white because my parents couldn't afford a color TV. LOL. Great to finally see it in color almost 44 years later.
@@SteelcityinNY Seeing that first play of their first possession and it's a hand off to Franco.....man. I looked at it a lot differently than I had before.
@@exn641US Every time I watch that man I appreciate more and more of what he did on the field, what he meant to Steeler Nation …and Franco’s Army…and what he meant to the sport and community. The part I appreciate and respect most is when he went up against Hollywood Henderson and had words. Backing his quarterback, Bradshaw! Henderson said something to the effect of Bradshaw couldn’t spell cat if he gave him the C and the T. That pissed of Franco enough to do something he rarely did. But what he commonly did is run that ball like he did after that exchange of words. 🙂 Thats also where I learned that my favorite expression became “Eat shit, Cowboys”. Lol

I thought the same thing when I saw that Lake Plaid Olympic teaser. What came next wasn't just a surprise but it was truly a miracle on ice. The kids beat the unbeatable. Thanks for bringing this up. By the way, is it me or practically everyone on the thread, better behaved and can actually type with proper grammar.
Professional athletes were generally more gracious--and more articulate--back then. The two guys I blame most for the decline are Joe Namath and Deion Sanders.
By 1979, the Steelers weren't just a great team, they were a celebrity team. Mean Joe was doing his iconic Coke commercial, Bradshaw was making movies with Burt Reynolds, Swann was moonlighting in the broadcast booth. Franco, LC Greenwood, Jack Lambert, Mel Blount and others had their own commercials, esp. for Steel tires. Even the kicker, Matt Bahr, did a KFC commercial -- I mean, even the kicker has a TV spot. I think, along with age and injuries, one of their problems in '80 was that the team became a little bit distracted by all their success. Here, they are still hungry and ready to win another SB.
This was my second year being a die hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan... It was right after they defeated the hated cowboys the year before and I'm still a Pittsburgh Steeler now in 2023... I put in a lot of time with my squad....

I miss this shit! When football was a game and quarterbacks were treated like men! MNF used to be a huge deal. I remember this like it was yesterday. I was in eighth grade. "Turn out the lights the parties over."
Mr. Moody, thank you. Great quality and content. This was 1979, the year “North Dallas Forty” hit movie theaters (8/1/1979). The talk of the Steelers playing with pain and one guy with a “pinched nerve in his neck” is rough. The NFL fought hard against the film. (I just watched a video on “North Dallas Forty”, “On Any Given Sunday” and “Concussion”.)
I distinctly remember this MNF game. Being a Steelers diehard at 9 years old living in the Dallas Area, this dismantling of the Broncos on National TV said LOUDLY that the Steelers were primed for a THIRD Pitt vs Dallas Super Bowl in January 1980. The Steelers held their end of it. Anyway. Good memories. Thanks for posting.
3rd and long - still line up 2WRs on each side, at TE and RBs split in the backfield - no shotgun - QB under center. Wow how the game has changed since the 70's. Of course they played defense back then

I was lucky to see the STEEL CURTAIN play in Pittsburgh! Even though I am from NYC, born and lived there during the 70's! Best place in the world to grow up IMO
What a joy to watch the game when the referee call is final, no stupid reviews and delays. And the players actually look human, not the 400lbs freaks of nature of today
I remember this game!!!! I was a little guy that just loved Mean Joe Greene and was wearing my Steelers outfit with cheap plastic helmet and my dad was a hardcore Broncos fan. Now that I’m an old man I couldn’t resist becoming a Broncos fan since they drafted John Elway!

@@darrenmuse and you're seeing them currently. lots and lots of empties in Atlanta against Philly Sunday night. Shouldve been packed. but don't understand your point anyway
Good luck with that, not in today's social media controlled world.
What’s with all the military bullshit in the NFL now??!?!? None of that shit before the 90’s.
You are spot on bro. I had to look twice and make sure that I myself didn’t write it because I’ve been saying this for years. This is when football was truly football and not the egotistical overpaid selfish players of today. When players were class, not trash.
Its pretty sad when you have to watch old football games to see real football.
Yep. Many of these players had to work Summer jobs in the off-season. They certainly weren't overpaid, whining Nancy Boys.
I miss big running backs now every r back is small I get they went to the pass but I still miss it like cam would have been a better running back.
@Big Bill O'Reilly bro that's your opinion but it's not changing how I feel
What a fascinating game it used to be...
When everything about the game was great
Thank you
Should have left the old commercials in this lol they were great back in the day
Agree totally
They did, I just saw an old Miller Lite Commercial
I haven't watched the NFL in 5 years. First flag of the game comes in at 20:00. Modern games would have been 5 flags at this point....including a phantom roughing the passer
And hopefully players are safer as a result. How many of these players developed crippling CTE symptoms afterwards when people stopped paying attention to them?
These are the Steelers and MNF I fell in love with as a kid in the 70's
I did too! Man, I looked forward to watching these steelers and felt very much a part of them as a teenager!
What a time to be a sports fan in Pittsburgh. Pops and the Bucs had just beaten the Orioles in the World Series, and now MNF at Three Rivers during a fourth Super Bowl title run for The Steelers.
Penguins sucked.
Yes, but the Pittsburgh Pisces were great.
R Martin absolutely. In the ‘70s, the pirates won two World Series and were always contending for another pennant. I’d argue that the pirates were the team of the decade. What a time indeed!
@@rmartin7558 Fish That Saved Pittsburgh!
And the Miracle on Ice was just around the corner...
The golden age of pro football so many legends on both sides Craig Morton Randy Gradishar Haven Moses Rick Upchurch Norris Weese wow brings back so many memories of being a kid and a major Steeler fan
Way better than today crap nfl and players, heck even the commercials are better!!
Ah, that wunnerful brain damage acnecompany, how we miss it.
When football was FOOTBALL!
Id give my left nut to re-live the 80s
@@paulcavigliano6388 Players didnt whine about being on bad teams then and trying everything they could to get out of their contracts. The NFL has become a joke and it's almost unwatchable.
@@bullock4211 No Seth, it IS unwatchable. After being a fan for almost 40 years, I stopped watching football 2 years ago. Dont miss it at all.
@@paulcavigliano6388 So why are you here?
tuned in to see if jack lambert was wearing a watch while he played
no, he wasn't wearing a watch. and he didn't do somersaults and whirly-twirls every time he made a tackle. he also didn't earn very much money, lol.
Hahaha. Go suck it Odell
JOHN RMIREZ If anything he’d had a side arm.
Marketing hadn't taken the league over.
I didnt see anybody staring at their hands either ,as if they had a phone or something! Maybe a walkie-talkie! lol
These commercials are priceless, brings back memories
Classy players that you will never see again.
Wow!!! The late Three Rivers Stadium once Sacred Ground!!!
Back when MNF was a big event. It's sad now.
Back when there was no Netflix, UA-cam, internet, or video games and there were three channels on television. Different time.
@@Kaddywompous We had Atari back then, however cannot even compare that to what's out today.
Frank Gifford called it "monday football" as he was doing his first part....today they would have eaten him up
I certainly agree with you on this 😔
harold mccoy I agree with that, but we also tend to over-romanticize the past, especially our childhood, as well. Things are much better today in certain ways. The crime rate is dramatically lower for one example.
Love the behind the scenes production guys at the beginning. Today that would be a robot smoking an e-cig.
A horrible performance they kept on turning the ball overs. Not being about to make much sense of it my 9 year old self told my dad, " maybe their worried about the Pirates and couldn't concentrate. 🤣
This epic and iconic MNF instrumental is actually called "Heavy Action" from 1970 - Johnny Pearson is the composer.
That is so great!. Some good memories. Watched this at Hill AFB club.
I remember watching this game when I was 20. Pro football has changed and not for the better.
Steve Gardner
Yep. That Bruce Jenner commercial said it all.
What’s the real shame is kids now will never understand back then it was generally all for the love of the game. The fans and players expected sportsmanlike competition. Now it’s just $$

Thank God for "capitalism" - freedom
Those were good times. I was in my mid-20's then, and MNF was a big deal. You get off work and see the Goodyear blimp hovering over your city, knowing the big game was in town, it was exhilarating. We had a crew that met up every Monday night, we'd play poker, watch the game, drink, and smoke. Great times. As you can see, the game was a lot different then, as were we all. 40 years later, I'm trying to enjoy it like I used to, but it's changed so much, the rules are FUBAR, it's just not the same.
Yup the rules were better I wish they would go back to say 74
No complaints from me if they were 79
Thanks for the upload...and Rest In Peace Howard ...a real character, who gave broadcasts character
That's a really good way of describing Howard. You nailed it.
that's not resting ...that's not resting.
What a game. It's good to see Mike Kruczek in action again. He was QB for BC and my brother was RB for that Eagles team!
Classic Classic Classic !!! ....I was 16 on this night , WHAT A WONDERFUL TIME IT WAS TO BE YOUNG !!
Great video Virgil...I appreciate your love for good ol’school football. 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing 😃
It's awesome when you get to see these old games with such good video quality.
And commercials!
Great times
Thank you Virgil Moody! This brings back such good ole memories! I love it!
got to check out that new Datsun truck
When MNF was fun.
Havent heard the MNF intro music since 1979.
You should emigrate to Great Britain. Aldi use it on their commercials. The original version - and by far the best.
Why can’t it be like this today?
Because Three Rivers Stadium was torn down.
And ESPN sucks eggs.
Because every player is a "brand"
Very simple
Show me the $$$$$$$$$
Because somebody would be offended.
The introduction fires you up.
Great memories - can't watch todays WWE football - this is classic stuff. MNF was king! Three Rivers was always rocking back in those days.
Agreed. The NFL died during the early 2000’s.
I don't get it. Where are all the flags? ;)
Damn the Steelers were good back then. There will never be such an abundance of talent like that on a single team ever again.
You'd be right!
Lol
Maybe not in terms of names but I still think the 91 Redskins were better.
@@MaximusWolfe They do have three super bowls under their belts, but it’s the first time I have heard that one. With all due respect, and I do respect the Redskins/Commanders. Hopefully they are a team that gets back to glory soon.
0:05 I tell you, the US men's hockey team doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of beating the Soviets. They just destroyed a bunch of NHL all-stars if you can believe that. And all we've got are college kids? Something tells me this is going to go very wrong...
Yes. And president carter will beat reagan in November.
That music still makes me fired up for football! Used to beg to stay up just to watch halftime highlights ha
ah yes the waning days of the 70's..unfortunately the last great decade
As an Oriole fan I really appreciate the kind and gracious words of Willie Stargell in the halftime interview. What a gentleman full of class he was.
Professional athletes were generally more gracious--and more articulate--back then.
The two guys I blame most for the decline are Joe Namath and Deion Sanders.
No dreadlocks and no tattoos all over.
Here, they are still hungry and ready to win another SB.
was 15 back then, my dad and i watched every mondaynight gameand it was good times!!! that was real football
I can finally watch the end of the MNF games, they always ended too late and my parents made me got to bed.
Hope your family can watch it with you.
This was my second year being a die hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan... It was right after they defeated the hated cowboys the year before and I'm still a Pittsburgh Steeler now in 2023... I put in a lot of time with my squad....
Well the Cowboys got their revenge against the hated Steelers in Super Bowl XXX thanks to Larry Brown.

I miss this shit! When football was a game and quarterbacks were treated like men!
MNF used to be a huge deal. I remember this like it was yesterday. I was in eighth grade.
"Turn out the lights the parties over."
Listening to Howard Dandy and Frank is the reason I’m watching !
Rodney in a "taste great, less filling" commercial... great times.
And to think I was 24 when this aired. Probably watched. How time passes, all three of the sportscasters are gone now. They looked so young.
Because they were,lol

What a great video. Football was special. The announcers were great and the game was rugged. No babuskas allowed
Man, I miss those awesome Denver uniforms. 11:38: "Red Miller, the Den-ver coach."
Pittsburgh had their THIRD crack at the Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX but it didn't go so well thanks to Larry Brown.

I was born and raised and still living there. 70's and 80's a great time for sure!
What a joy to watch the game when the referee call is final, no stupid reviews and delays. And the players actually look human, not the 400lbs freaks of nature of today
Cosell was the greatest !! What an intro
I watched this as a teenager in 1979. I was Steeler crazy.
