  • A Black Music History class at San Diego City College had just learned about the Stono Rebellion of 1739 and the Negro Act of 1740, which banned slaves from having drums, among other oppressive measures. Without the drums to communicate, slaves began using their own bodies as a percussive instrument, which evolved into hambone or “Pattin’ Juba.”
Reporters from the City Times were invited to view a demonstration by Danny "Slapjazz" Barber of hambone at a recent class meeting. Produced by Orrin Iverson, with a story by Brenda Lino-Rojas on sdcitytimes.com.

I love seeing how it's performed live and how intricate it is!

Marie "Caldonia" Reynolds lived indigent on the streets of Cincinnati and would perform Juba, hambone, and play spoons and bones for spare change until she died in 1984. BB King would bring her onstage to dance during the song "Caldonia" whenever he was in town. BB helped pay for her burial.

We use to do this as kids in the early 80 cuz we really could not afford a radio or music instrument. Glad to see this.

What is funny is that I started doing this just kinda out of fun and yes im part Black and then I found out it was an actual cultural style.
