Nick, thank you for sharing this story. This could actually be a mirror of what my son is going through in second grade...its a deep reminder of how everyone is different and some of us learn in a different way. Best of luck to you as I look forward to watching my own child shine through these struggles.
Beautiful story. My son is 8. From Kindi to year 1 he didn't engage at school and was behind. His kindergarten teacher told me "He'll do speech and drama and that sort of thing when he's older." She had him pegged. He'd been late to walk, late toiletting, late to string together a sentence, and I wondered how he would ever learn to read and write. In grade 1 he had a teacher who had made a personal investment in a new literacy program, incorporating song, story, movement etc. My son went from below average in reading to waaay above in what his teacher described as 'savant style'. He still preferred to run around the yard rather than take part in lessons. His teacher suggested cognitive testing. He was assessed as gifted, with some physical and social challenges. He's tried two schools, but they can't provide what he needs socially or academically. Now he home educates, and he leads his learning. His favourite topics at 8 years of age include genetics, biochemistry, history, writing, and theology. He's behind in math, but who knows - perhaps that's just marinading inside him like everything else has. I will never, ever judge a person's ability according to how they went at school, or how they perform in any one area. We are so full of potential as human beings, and sometimes it just needs recognition for it to be unleashed. We need to remember to see people - especially children - as whole, unique individuals.
Thanks for this.
Nick, you are a gifted writer.
Thank you Nick!
Absolutely liked this! Proud of you
Wow, good job Nick!!
Very well done! Thank you!
Lovely.
Everything I felt. And I turned into a pretty successful family man. Although all my teachers told me "if only he would apply himself, he could do so much more. " little did they know how much i was applying.
Hi Nick, I am so proud of you! As an advocate for Dyslexics as well as a tutor I hope to share your creation with your permission. I am thankful your parents found help for you! Good Luck I know you will do great in this world!
Thank you Shiela! I appreciate the kind words and I too am grateful I got such an amazing tutor so early on :) please do share it with anyone who'd benefit from it. That was the whole goal to bring awareness to each individual student and that they are seen and recognized for who they are and the genius they bring to world in their specific set of values.
This is very touching. I am a SPED teacher and I can relate. I will be sharing this to Special Education Philippines Facebook page. :)

Nick,
I love this piece. I understand where you are coming from and didn't learn until later in life that I was dyslexic. I am now in grad school and creating a course in digital story telling for 4-6 graders. I wanted to know if I could get permission to use your video in my course. Thank you for sharing it!
vanessa Chulak Hi Vanessa! Yes of course please do :) Nick

Well crafted story, Nick! I'd love to show the movie file to my digital storytelling students. Would that be OK with you? I'd need you to email it to me. --NAN
