- Watch the video to discover the historical importance of bronze casting in Benin and how this tradition continues today. The video shows bronze casters at work, sculpting and creating plaques using the lost wax process.
The Horniman currently has historical Benin plaques on display and two replica plaques in the Museum’s handling collection, including one like the one shown in the video, depicting an Oba with mudfish legs and feet.

The Horniman Museum and Gardens is an inspiring, surprising, family-friendly, free attraction in South London’s Forest Hill. We’ve been open since Victorian times, when Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to visitors. Since then, our collection has grown tenfold and includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium and natural history collection.
Unusually for such an important museum, you can see our collection up-close and face-to-face. You can even pick up, try on and play with some of our objects.

What's the crucible made of?
Hi Evan, we don't have a record of what this crucible was made from but other crucibles in our collection have been made of clay.
Most likely they use crucibles made of clay mixed with dust of broken pottery.

To think how far we were , to take time or have time to create such art. When all the west were tipping cows..;]
Uh...the west has been doing this since the discovery of Bronze, what are you talking about? Lmao
The small people aren’t important to the oba I learned in school

This is brass not bronze
It blows my mind that this process works at all. It just seems so sloppy. So many ways things can go wrong.
It's not to dissimilar to the method I use to cast aluminium I used to use a car battery but found a stripped down hairdryer linked to a old laptop power supply much more efficient sometimes the simplest methods are the easiest though it does go wrong from time to time that said I'm still learning
@@czeslawmeyer7871 I've also done some backyard aluminum casting and I'm going to try to recreate the Benin method, first in aluminum and then try it with bronze
Yeah I know right, I'm sure you have a method you personally invented that works better. Please share with us
@@Tu51ndBl4d3 School him!
They have been using this method for centuries and others adopted it.
Mmmm! Bronze casting in white pants and sandals
