      I used PlantNet to verify if I had found Poison Ivy. Unfortunately, I only did this after tearing out some of the plants. It turned out to be a wild berry plant (the name escapes me now). It had hairy stems, so that is something I now know to look for. My problem is that I DID develop poison ivy blisters, so I still need to figure out where the poison ivy is hiding in my wild corner of my yard (or my out-of-control garden).

    We have poison ivy in our back yard under all the fences. It comes off easy and roots are shallow. I trimmed the leaves back before, which pruned it to be even more productive!! PULL IT OUT. Follow the vines, get the big bulb nodes in the ground. Stay safe

    • @JimBobsGarden
      @JimBobsGarden  5 років тому +8

      Not sure that it would kill someone but you are completely correct about not burning poison ivy. The oils can be transmitted in the smoke and could be ingested into the lungs. Even if it didn't kill you I cant imagine the problems that a poison ivy rash in the lungs could cause. The way I dispose of my plants is to place them in an out of way place where they dry out and rot down. If you do not have such a location the best way is to bag them and put them out for the city to put in a landfill.

      Urushiol, the active antigen in poison ivy ( Toxicodendron radicans ), is frequently associated with type I and type III hypersensitivity reactions. These reactions most often result in cutaneous symptoms that vary in severity and may at times require medical interventions. Injuries involving other body systems associated with urushiol exposure are far less common. Here, we present 2 unrelated cases of urushiol respiratory exposure status after burning of poison ivy that resulted in cardiopulmonary arrest and ultimately death. In both cases, the history, circumstances, and autopsy findings are consistent with urushiol smoke inhalation having either caused or contributed to death. The cases are unique in that they represent the first cases of death related to poison ivy smoke exposure. Clinicians and forensic pathologists should be aware of the fact that urushiol smoke exposure may lead to morbidity and mortality.

    One more thing to keep it from coming back. Poison ivy thrives in acidic soil. Eastern PI does not grow in soil above a pH of 8.5. If you mix in pulverized lime with the soil where you rip it out, it's less likely to grow back. Not a solution if you want to grow other acidic soil plants, but helps if it's a border area you have no plans for.

    I applaud you for trying to pass along this information, but...
    I watched you touching your pants with the gloves, and then without them. It seems like you may have transferred that PI oil all over the place. I've heard it can stay on your clothes until you wash them with VERY hot water. If you don't, you could get PI several days/weeks/months later when you put them back on.
    I'm motivated to stay the Hell away from poison ivy. I got a really bad case about four years ago after touching some vines and not cleaning up right after. I was out of work for three days... my whole face was swollen... I looked like a gargoyle.

      Well I have had multiple cases of poison ivy in my childhood, too many to count. After shooting this video the only place I got it was on my wrists as my gloves did not cover that area. If you're super sensitive to it, definitely be aware of your clothing / gloves / shoes even and wash them separately if they come in contact. If super-sensitive, honestly the roundup approach is worth considering as you can avoid any clothing contact with the ivy. I use roundup on them occasionally, but I'm careful to just get the fluid on the ivy leaves only. Works, keeps roundup off other plants / surface of ground.

    Spray it with a jalapenos sauce water mix. 50, 50 mix. Anu hot sauce seems to work. Tje hotter the better. Strain the mix if your sprayer won't pass the mixure through the noozle to get out large solids..
    May take a few times with new shoots till the roots get starved out. Also have heard a vinegar water mix will kill the top portion down as well.

      I just asked my best friend who is a plant physiologist(doctorate degree and he spends almost every day assaying properties for the land conservancy. he knows just about every plant there is in the woods and how to deal with it.) vinegar kills the leaves not the roots. he recommends specific herbicides applied in a specific way. furthermore half these homemade chemicals are worse for the environment than the herbicides that he uses himself, and he is a devoted steward of the environment. mythinformation is a scary huge thing regarding this subject. NEVER BURN POISON IVY ps hot pepper is a deer/rabbit deterrent. pulling poison ivy can put the oil into the air too as well as mowing or chopping it. I have a drainage ditch on my property with a depression near it that used to have the drainage pipe from the pond that has been moved to a different spot. It is out of the way and there is no danger of contact or the vines being washed down the ditch so I throw it there to rot. I am hoping that it will rot down eventually and fill in the depression. It is interesting though that so far none of it has regrown in that area. The best bet however for most people is to bag it and put it out with the trash. It could be composted but then you could get the oils persisting in the compost and might then get a rash from handling your compost.

      Hey Bob! I just made a special trip to the garage just for you. I wanted to be sure I got the name right. I use "Roundup Poison Ivy & Heavy Brush Killer Plus". This stuff comes in a 1 gallon plastic container with a sprayer head. You just spray the leaves with it and in a couple of days the leaves are yellow, after a few more days the thing is completely dead. Most importantly, like he said in the video, it kills the poison ivy down at the root. I got a really bad dose of poison ivy when I first moved into this house long ago. I made a point to learn what this crap looked like and if I ever see even the slightest bit of it I blast it with this Roundup product and it never comes back. It used to be all over the place but with patience in just a couple of years I had gotten rid of it all, but I still keep a supply of this stuff around for the odd time that it shows up. Like just the other day I spotted a very small plant out on my property. I immediately nuked it. This was the first plant I've seen in about two years. This stuff has really worked well for me so I feel confident in recommending it. [EDIT ->] I would never in a million years do what the guy in the video is doing. Not for love, not for money not for NOTHING. You do not build up an immunity to it. It actually gets worse with each occurrence - same as with yellow jacket venom. Some people lose their sensitivity to it as they get older but I wouldn't gamble on that.
