Yes, it is her mark: first she makes a "traditional" version, then she start to play with the song and see where she can bring it in style, technique, arrangement, jumps, everything. Song coaches love her, because she can demonstrate just about everything you can do with a human voice.
Sohyang is one of the people who was recognized as a true singer in Korea, not a box-office singer, and there was even an anecdote that she refused to take medicine and sang the last song while battling ovarian cancer. Some context for you on this one - it's a singing contest (which she won on this occasion), she does her own arrangements (as others have said), and, if you listen to the lyrics, it is an encouraging, celebratory song. Letting someone know that they can lean on you, and that we will all need someone to lean on, especially during these times. She has a gospel singing background (as did Whitney Houston), and besides being a cancer survivor, So Hyang's desire isn't to be famous or wealthy, but rather to encourage and comfort her audience. She's had pneumonia numerous times, and still performed in spite her illnesses. She's a great example to me and many others, and one of So. Korea's great treasures.

She actually did this song live a few weeks ago in what appeared to be a virtual concert. Knowing all the health issues that she's had over the years, it was nice to see her healthy, and that she could still sing this song very well. Sohyang and Morissette Amon are my two favorite singers who I found last year.

You are right. One person said "If she is so good, how many awards has she won?" This is a singer who has turned down a contract with Sony last year and has decided that she does not want to seek fame or money, but to comfort people in difficult times. The American/UK music industry barely even know her; thanks to UA-cam to allow us to hear this fantastic singer. Vocal coaches (not the run of the mill "vocal coaches") who are knowledgeable, respected, and/or published (eg John Henny Vocal Studio, Roberto Delli Carri (Master teacher of vocal coaches), Elizabeth Zharoff from the Charismatic Voice, Beth Roars, etc.) rank her with Whitney and Mariah.
Tom, This is a long Comment. Sorry but it contains information and links that I think you will be very pleased to have. You have done five performances by Sohyang. Three of the five were at TV Contests. "Never Enough" was a video she made by request for an event opening and "I Have Nothing" was at a TV Concert. The others were all at Korean TV Contests. She HAS made each of those songs "her own". This approach is absolutely deliberate. The idea is to display all of you talents in one shot. Sohyang is so talented that she does all of the arrangements; music, chorus, orchestra, lighting, and costumes for these events. At "Immortal Songs Two", Michael Bolton was the Guest of Honor. They all did an interpretation of his hits. After "Lean On Me" he called her a virtuoso and asked her to go on tour with him. So, yes, she DOES interpret each of these classics in her own dynamic style - every time. At concert performances, she may present a song in a more more standard fashion but still is supported by chorus and orchestra. At "Begin Again Korea" performances, you will see that it is the complete opposite; she does her own songs or interpretations, but she is sitting in a chair supported by several other musicians and singers. This was the ending, last performance of IMMORTAL SONGS 2 and SO HYANG won the contest!! Michael Bolton was touring Korea and asked So Hyang to accompany him on the tour, oh, how could refuse. The TV show this performance is taken from,is basically a show where each week they have a theme, one week it’s ‘traditional’, another it was ‘ great American pop songs’ or as in this show, the songs of a particular artist, where artists perform their own version of one of their songs. Michael Bolton sang ‘lean on me’ (although it’s not his song) so Sohyang chose this song, needless to say she won the show. I saw the whole show & Sohyang was in a league of her own, enough to render Michael Bolton literally speechless when they went to him for his comments. When he regained his composure he simply said ‘that was spectacular’ & went on to say how she had risen to the role of ‘virtuoso’

You have to understand Korean culture, standing and screaming during a song is considered very disrespectful and its only been recently with the younger generation that standing and yelling at the end started. Use to be they would all sit and clap politely. I do know that in the unedited version of this, because KBS does tweak all live performances unfortunately- there is some audience screaming that they removed. If you stood and 'shook it up' you would be getting some looks particularly from the older generation lol.
I wonder if Koreans and Canadians are related? We Canadians tend to sit and smile at a performance and clap enthusiastically at the end but not too much dancing in the aisles. Americans are more known for letting their hair down during a performance, but since So Hyang is such a classy act and show I suspect even Americans would be on their more dignified behaviour when applauding her performances. Just my suspicions ... 😉

It was emotional just not heart-string tugging emotional. As far as the people not getting up there could be some cultural thing about that, I don't know for sure but maybe. She writes her own arrangements. She has never had formal training except a couple years ago she went to a symposium and workshop for two weeks under some whoopty do singer/songwriter. So Hyang learned to sing from Mariah Carey records and Whitney Huston too. Much like Morissette also did. I suspect both have perfect pitch. Like most creative people they will do things that we will be crazy over and some that we are not worthy yet to hear. How we react to music is personal and valid as long as it is not crowding someone else. I learned a long time ago that not everybody hears what I hear when listening to music. So to avoid getting my feelings hurt I always listen to my music by myself. Then I listen to others musical choices because I can almost always find something good about their choices. You might have guessed I spent and spend a lot of time by my self. Which used to bother me but now I've grown tired of trying to make friends. That certainly cuts down on the apologies I always seemed to have to make.

You are so right Whitney was awesome So Hyang is brilliant But you have to give it to So Hyang she is a better singer than Whitney especially live. And I can say that because I went to see Whitney Twice because I love her and I was so disappointed with her vocals. She just never had the control and power and energy to sing those amazing power ballads full out. She often would talk through the difficult notes or completely avoid them. Where So Hyang is fierce in her delivery and goes for every note with conviction and success. She was only really good vocally when she was young and it was a steady decline. It was so painful for me to see this that I had to leave the concert Whitney always looked nervous and removed from her experience to me as she got a little older and it was all over her. that being said I Love Whitney she is one of a kind but if your going for technical emotional powerhouse singing its So Hyang for me.
Whitney had the best voice in the world… You must be talking about the years when her voice was declining, you can’t summarize her whole career with that… Everything from the mid 90s to the end of her life was a steady vocal decline, for a lot of reasons including drugs and smoking.
So if you know her voice was declining, how could you say that she was inferior? It wasn’t because of age… Everyone knows that it was more than that… It was drugs and smoking… Anyway, I’m done. Some people just want to talk and make criticisms to sound smart. I can’t stop you.

There are more of Sohayng fans then there are haters. Some people can't accept that there can be many people of equal talent where it singing, painting or something else or are simply jealous.
You are right. One person said "If she is so good, how many awards has she won?" This is a singer who has turned down a contract with Sony last year and has decided that she does not want to seek fame or money, but to comfort people in difficult times. The American/UK music industry barely even know her; thanks to UA-cam to allow us to hear this fantastic singer. Vocal coaches (not the run of the mill "vocal coaches") who are knowledgeable, respected, and/or published (eg John Henny Vocal Studio, Roberto Delli Carri (Master teacher of vocal coaches), Elizabeth Zharoff from the Charismatic Voice, Beth Roars, etc.) rank her with Whitney and Mariah.
Tom, This is a long Comment. Sorry but it contains information and links that I think you will be very pleased to have.
You have done five performances by Sohyang. Three of the five were at TV Contests. "Never Enough" was a video she made by request for an event opening and "I Have Nothing" was at a TV Concert. The others were all at Korean TV Contests. She HAS made each of those songs "her own". This approach is absolutely deliberate. The idea is to display all of you talents in one shot. Sohyang is so talented that she does all of the arrangements; music, chorus, orchestra, lighting, and costumes for these events. At "Immortal Songs Two", Michael Bolton was the Guest of Honor. They all did an interpretation of his hits. After "Lean On Me" he called her a virtuoso and asked her to go on tour with him.
So, yes, she DOES interpret each of these classics in her own dynamic style - every time. At concert performances, she may present a song in a more more standard fashion but still is supported by chorus and orchestra. At "Begin Again Korea" performances, you will see that it is the complete opposite; she does her own songs or interpretations, but she is sitting in a chair supported by several other musicians and singers.

This was the ending, last performance of IMMORTAL SONGS 2 and SO HYANG won the contest!! Michael Bolton was touring Korea and asked So Hyang to accompany him on the tour, oh, how could refuse. Not sure how many but there is video of them singing together!! There were some big names in the competition to like the young guy they showed first after she started singing is Jay Park. The the lady next is Lena Park. Woman who puts right hand up to her ear is "AILEE", she sings a killer I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU and Blond surprised at high note is TAEYOEN!!

The TV show this performance is taken from,is basically a show where each week they have a theme, one week it’s ‘traditional’, another it was ‘ great American pop songs’ or as in this show, the songs of a particular artist, where artists perform their own version of one of their songs. Michael Bolton sang ‘lean on me’ (although it’s not his song) so Sohyang chose this song, needless to say she won the show. I saw the whole show & Sohyang was in a league of her own, enough to render Michael Bolton literally speechless when they went to him for his comments. When he regained his composure he simply said ‘that was spectacular’ & went on to say how she had risen to the role of ‘virtuoso’

After this MB asked Sohyang to go on tour with him and she turned him down except for a couple of places in SK. They sang 'The prayer' only on fan cam but still sounds good. I love MB but I think he looked constipated throughout this fan cam lol.

I think your wife enjoyed it, she’s just not all that expressive on the outside, but I can tell that she liked it.
You have to understand Korean culture, standing and screaming during a song is considered very disrespectful and its only been recently with the younger generation that standing and yelling at the end started. Use to be they would all sit and clap politely. I do know that in the unedited version of this, because KBS does tweak all live performances unfortunately- there is some audience screaming that they removed. If you stood and 'shook it up' you would be getting some looks particularly from the older generation lol.
I wonder if Koreans and Canadians are related? We Canadians tend to sit and smile at a performance and clap enthusiastically at the end but not too much dancing in the aisles. Americans are more known for letting their hair down during a performance, but since So Hyang is such a classy act and show I suspect even Americans would be on their more dignified behaviour when applauding her performances. Just my suspicions ... 😉

It was emotional just not heart-string tugging emotional. As far as the people not getting up there could be some cultural thing about that, I don't know for sure but maybe. She writes her own arrangements. She has never had formal training except a couple years ago she went to a symposium and workshop for two weeks under some whoopty do singer/songwriter. So Hyang learned to sing from Mariah Carey records and Whitney Huston too. Much like Morissette also did. I suspect both have perfect pitch. Like most creative people they will do things that we will be crazy over and some that we are not worthy yet to hear.
How we react to music is personal and valid as long as it is not crowding someone else. I learned a long time ago that not everybody hears what I hear when listening to music. So to avoid getting my feelings hurt I always listen to my music by myself. Then I listen to others musical choices because I can almost always find something good about their choices. You might have guessed I spent and spend a lot of time by my self. Which used to bother me but now I've grown tired of trying to make friends. That certainly cuts down on the apologies I always seemed to have to make.

You are so right Whitney was awesome So Hyang is brilliant But you have to give it to So Hyang she is a better singer than Whitney especially live. And I can say that because I went to see Whitney Twice because I love her and I was so disappointed with her vocals. She just never had the control and power and energy to sing those amazing power ballads full out. She often would talk through the difficult notes or completely avoid them. Where So Hyang is fierce in her delivery and goes for every note with conviction and success. She was only really good vocally when she was young and it was a steady decline. It was so painful for me to see this that I had to leave the concert Whitney always looked nervous and removed from her experience to me as she got a little older and it was all over her. that being said I Love Whitney she is one of a kind but if your going for technical emotional powerhouse singing its So Hyang for me.
Whitney had the best voice in the world… You must be talking about the years when her voice was declining, you can’t summarize her whole career with that… Everything from the mid 90s to the end of her life was a steady vocal decline, for a lot of reasons including drugs and smoking.
So if you know her voice was declining, how could you say that she was inferior? It wasn’t because of age… Everyone knows that it was more than that… It was drugs and smoking… Anyway, I’m done. Some people just want to talk and make criticisms to sound smart. I can’t stop you.
@@Rosannasfriend you're taking it personally it's just my opinion and it comes with the knowledge also that I had friends that produced her albums and for her to get through a song even when her voice was in better shape was grueling to get her to sound the way she sounded for the records whereas when you hear So Hyang all of her performance are mostly live and she just knocks it out of the ballpark which tells me she has a more reliable voice that's all I love Whitney I'm not bagging on Whitney I'm just sharing my experience
