Underground is Kustrica's magnus opus - his career defining materpiece much how the 'Guernica' was Picassos! My favourite film of all time bar none! The best performance goes to Lazar Ristovski and the scene where his voice breaks as he's looking for his son Jovan - it tears my heart evertime!!! To his character, his son was his life and without him nothing else mattered. The final scene where Slavko Stimac gives the closing dialogue. For a Yugslav - it tears my heart to shreds!! How the land breaks apart a direct representation of how Yugoslavia tore apart!!! For all of the slapstck comedy, for all of the absurdity, the over the top overacting, this film delivers some of the best writing I have ever seen in any film, some amazing acting especially Ristovski and Stimac. Kusturica is a genius a true master of film. I've seen this film about 6-7 times over the last 15 years. And will continue to revisit this masterpiece every few years. Love this film so much. Up there with Pretty Village Pretty Flame!!
The song in the middle that you liked is a childrens song. Normally children would get in a circle hold hands and sing this song. For the film they have rock and rolled it a bit. The words are a bit like ring a ring a roses. And the tune is normally the same as that, the words though are a story along the theme of here comes an old man, he is bringing some eggs. It's one of the greatest war film ever made in the history of cinema. especially I loved the film so much because it broke the style of telling stories of war films which were being made in a very serotype way. It's a hidden gem every cinephile should watch this film once in a lifetime.😍😍😍
Movie is a almost allegorical reflection of what happened to our people and our country during the second half of 20th century. How ordinary man was suffered by betrayal of his own kin and how we as a society ended up crippled and unfit to live the new world because of the "underground" we were living in.
The Ringe ringe raja song was originally a children's song, turned into a modern version which happens to have the same motive as if it was made for the movie... Basically saying "Here comes The Guy" pointing out the ever-present trend of idolizing certain individuals and trusting them to insane measures.
That's not an analysis or a review, it's more like chatting about the film with a friend. Not quite useful and insightful, but it was good to reminisce about the film and get these vibes again.
I'm not Serbian; when we escaped from the USSR we settled with relatives in Jugoslavija and despite not being Croat, either, I wound up in the HVO during the Balkan Wars they depict here. First off... the very last scene "Once Upon A Time There Was A Country" makes me literally sob. The movie is magnificent. So powerful and memorable. I hate to say this, but the scene in the village during the 3rd act is INCREDIBLY true to life. Absolutely that sort of thing happened. But... this movie is so wonderful, a loving depiction - warts and all - of a dream that just wasn't able to be. My Slovenijan housemate's mum watched this with one of her sisters visiting from Slovenija (both are in their 80s, his mum escaped in the early 50s, his aunt stayed to the end) told me the scene with Natalja being tied to Blackie is considered to represent Croatia being forced to reunite with her Slavic family after the Germans left. My Croat friends say it's NOT, but... it does have a ring to it... Anyhow Ringe Ringe Raja is a 60s style version of a kid's song. Great video, guys!
I remember being quite confused about the historical clips during the movie, where Blacky is photoshopped into. It would be nice to have covered that aspect of the movie.

It´s not cartoonish, it is simply balkan. I have the impression, that you are most inadequate to analyse this movie, the best of 1995, of one of the best directors of all time, whose name you cannot even pronounce, really disapponting... The guys aren´t cartoonish, they simply free, and do as they like, always ready to carry the consequences of their actions, should they go wrong (needless to say , that anyone would preffer to be one of them, instead of being like what you represent). It´s mostly about how the West/Nato (that you represent) destroyed the country and the people of an otherwise peacefull community, by inflaming fascism and racism, in order to create new markets, after making it defenseless to the invasions of said markets. "terrorize, divide and rule", or, in other words "USA, Britain, Germany" You first say, that the one is an electrician, then you say he´s a gangster... Why would a gangster need to be an electrician anyways??? That´s watching you turn off your brains (or simply, as already mentioned, being intellectually inadequate for the task). If you have no clue of the traditions and ethics of the Balkans, why even try (if not having a distinct agenda) ??? The underground caverns are created by the Natoic white-flesh-smugglers, that bring cheap working hands and and young, beautiful girls to the West, people that try to escape the hell the Nato created. (not literally having to smuggle people themselves, but the result is the same anyways. I have to point that out, cause, so long, you don´t seem willing of grasping it by your own). My country, despite being a natoic country itself, tried to name the natoic crimes in the region, at the beggining of the 1990´s war, like financing, arming and advising the terrorists, whose actions led to the war, and the splitting of the country But my country was very powerless for the task, and the rest of the western population was voluntarily closing its eyes. By the way, it wasn´t the government of my country that ever tried to veto the Nato-council, it were just the state/public-TV-journalists, which still had the priviledge of free speech back then (in comparison to now), and dared to display on national-TV (similar to the BBC, an independent, but state-financed entity, unlike private-TV), how weapons were delivered to the terrorists through the country´s western ports and through Albania (we are talking here about army-scale-deliveries, made by gigantic ships, and not the weapons that the Taliban or the ISIS uses). It was a scandal, that ended in anti-Nato-street-protests in my country, before the reports and the journalists disappeared forever. German universities, having the tradition of being in a country, that has already once admitted its mostrosities (unlike Britain/the US), were more critical on the subject, and have afterwards done tons of historical research, proving that many of the West´s "news" about the 1990´s war were constructed (pure propaganda), but this again, is just scientific research, that german politicians are allowed to ignore anyways (and british/US-politicians even more).

И ВОТ ТАК, ОГРОМНОЕ БОЛЬШИНСТВО ЛЮДЕЙ, ВОЛЬНО ИЛИ НЕ ВОЛЬНО СОГРЕШАЮТ (не вольно значит что, грех только у себя в уме, под действием той или иной порочной страсти, является таким же грехом), И ДЬЯВОЛ при земной жизни полностью ЗАВЛАДЕВАЕТ ДУШОЙ человека. ЧТО «ПРИВЕДЁТ», рано или поздно, любого ЧЕЛОВЕКА только к одному, К ПСИХИЧЕСКОМУ РАССТРОЙСТВУ, УБИЙСТВУ, или САМОУБИЙСТВУ. И к АДУ для ДУШИ после физической СМЕРТИ тела. И как надо понимать последние кадры этого фильма, когда все эти главные герои в огромной радости оторвались и поплыли на острове праздно торжествуя. Дело в том что БОГОХУЛЬСТВО считается для дьявола самым лучшим человеческим грехом, и за него он готов предоставлять человеку при земной жизни свои «дары»(деньги, слава и подобное), а главное обещает устроить им рай в аду. Так вот НИ В КОЕМ СЛУЧАЕ НЕ ПРЕЛЬЩАТЬСЯ этим. ВОТ для ВСЕХ две интересных РЕКОМЕНДАЦИИ от наших ПРАВОСЛАВНЫХ (ПРАВОСЛАВИЕ значит ПРАВИЛЬНОЕ СЛАВИЕ ГОСПОДА нашего ИИСУСА ХРИСТА) СВЯТЫХ ОТЦОВ, МОЖЕТ ПРИГОДИТЬСЯ. Первая звучит так : ДЬЯВОЛ ВЕЛИКИЙ ЛЖЕЦ, и ОБЯЗАТЕЛЬНО ОБМАНЕТ человека. «Чем усерднее «служит» ему ЧЕЛОВЕК, тем СТРАШНЕЕ БУДЕТ его земная СМЕРТЬ, а что будет с его ДУШОЙ , после СМЕРТИ тела, так и вообще представить СТРАШНО». И вторая РЕКОМЕНДАЦИЯ такова: «Если ЧЕЛОВЕК при земной жизни ХОЧЕТ ПОНЯТЬ что такое АД, можно попробовать МИЗИНЕЦ руки ПОДЕРЖАТЬ несколько секунд НАД открытым ОГНЁМ, вот «НА МИЗИНЕЦ» и ПОЧУВСТВУЕТЕ". И вот как БЫЛО БЫ ХОРОШО, ЧТОБЫ КАЖДЫЙ зритель ПОНИМАЛ это. НО ЭТО очень «тонкие» моменты, ПОНЯТЬ которые МОЖНО будет ТОЛЬКО ЧИТАЯ, И ГЛАВНОЕ, ИЗУЧАЯ КНИГУ ЖИЗНИ, СВЯТОЕ ЕВАНГЕЛИЕ.
Да и ПОРОЧНЫЕ СТРАСТИ это ГОРДЫНЯ, ТЩЕСЛАВИЕ, ЛУКАВСТВО, СЕБЯЛЮБИЕ, ТРУСОСТЬ, ЧЕЛОВЕКОУГОДИЕ, ЗАВИСТЬ, ЖАДНОСТЬ, ОСУЖДЕНИЕ, АЛЧНОСТЬ, СКУПОСТЬ, СРЕБРОЛЮБИЕ, ЛИЦЕМЕРИЕ, УНЫНИЕ, ЧРЕВОУГОДИЕ, ГНЕВ, РЕВНОСТЬ, ВОРОВСТВО, РАЗДРАЖЕНИЕ, ВЛАСТОЛЮБИЕ, ПОХОТЬ, ЛЮБОПЫТСТВО, ПЬЯНСТВО, КУРЕНИЕ, ПРЕЛЮБОДЕЯНИЕ, ОБИДЧИВОСТЬ, ЗАСТЕНЧИВОСТЬ, ХИТРОСТЬ, РАССЕЯННОСТЬ и т.д. и т.п. После, БОГ одел их в «одежды» что значит в тела, и ДАЛ ЗАПОВЕДЬ «ПЛОДИТЕСЬ и РАЗМНОЖАЙТЕСЬ» и заселяйте Землю. НО для размножения, В ПОЛОВЫЕ ОТНОШЕНИЯ ПРИХОДИЛОСЬ ВСТУПАТЬ БРАТУ С СЕСТРОЙ. И ЭТО было вызвано необходимостью а НЕ ПОХОТЬЮ. И ВОТ ПОЧЕМУ КАЖДЫЙ рождающийся ребёнок уже ГРЕШЕН. Только не физическое(физическое если вызвано похотью, между родными братьями и сёстрами), а так называемое ПЕРВОРОДНОЕ (ДУХОВНОЕ , ПРИЧИНА которого ГРЕХОПАДЕНИЕ) ПОВРЕЖДЕНИЕ(ГРЕХ, ПОРОЧНАЯ СТРАСТЬ) НА КАЖДОМ человеке при рождении. И У КАЖДОГО человека своя СОБСТВЕННАЯ СТРАСТЬ. И ЭТО БОЛЕЗНЬ, но БОЛЕЗНЬ прежде всего ДУХОВНОГО ПЛАНА. И именно ПОРОЧНЫЕ СТРАСТИ людей являются ПРИЧИНОЙ ВСЕХ БЕД, СТРАДАНИЙ, и РАЗРУШИТЕЛЬНЫХ ДЕЙСТВИЙ на Земле. А вот условия ОСВОБОЖДЕНИЯ ОТ этого ПЕРВОРОДНОГО ГРЕХА(ПОВРЕЖДЕНИЯ, СТРАСТИ) как раз и ЗАПИСАНЫ в КНИГЕ ЖИЗНИ, СВЯТОМ ЕВАНГЕЛИЕ. НО СНАЧАЛА , чтобы донести их людям, сам СЫН, БОГ СЛОВО ВОЧЕЛОВЕЧИЛСЯ(ИИСУС ХРИСТОС, имя ИИСУС означает СПАСИТЕЛЬ). А ЕГО за это РАСПЯЛИ. Но ОСТАЛОСЬ СВЯТОЕ ЕВАНГЕЛИЕ. Вот ЭТО и есть БОЖЕСТВЕННЫЕ УСЛОВИЯ , во первых ИЗБАВЛЕНИЯ ОТ ПЕРВОРОДНОГО ГРЕХА(а правильней сказать от ПОВРЕЖДЕНИЯ), И во вторых ДЛЯ СПАСЕНИЯ ДУШИ человеческой, ПОЛУЧЕНИЯ ЖИЗНИ ВЕЧНОЙ для ДУШИ, ПОСЛЕ физической СМЕРТИ тела , В ЦАРСТВИЕ НЕБЕСНОМ.
И поэтому ИСТИННАЯ ВЕРА В БОГА, в первую очередь ЗАКЛЮЧАЕТСЯ В «БОРЬБЕ» каждого ЧЕЛОВЕКА, ПРИ ЗЕМНОЙ ЖИЗНИ, СО своими собственными ПОРОЧНЫМИ СТРАСТЯМИ, И только ТАК можно получить СПАСЕНИЕ для своей ДУШИ.
Ну А для того ЧТОБЫ ПОНЯТЬ ВСЁ что написано выше , И для ИСКРЕННЕГО ХРИСТИАНСКОГО ПОКАЯНИЯ, которое необходимо УСПЕТЬ(потому что ВРЕМЕНИ осталось очень МАЛО, ВОЗМОЖНО даже примерно 3 МЕСЯЦА, И ВСЁ(смотри СВЯТОЕ ЕВАНГЕЛИЕ от МАТФЕЯ, ГЛ. 24)) СДЕЛАТЬ при ЗЕМНОЙ ЖИЗНИ ЧЕЛОВЕКА, ПЕРВЫМ "шагом" БУДЕТ (и как об этом уже упоминалось выше) ЧТЕНИЕ и ГЛАВНОЕ, ИЗУЧЕНИЕ КНИГИ ЖИЗНИ, СВЯЩЕННОГО ПИСАНИЯ НОВЫЙ ЗАВЕТ. ✋🏻
It´s not cartoonish, it is simply balkan. I have the impression, that you are most inadequate to analyse this movie, the best of 1995, of one of the best directors of all time, whose name you cannot even pronounce, really disapponting... The guys aren´t cartoonish, they simply free, and do as they like, always ready to carry the consequences of their actions, should they go wrong (needless to say , that anyone would preffer to be one of them, instead of being like what you represent). It´s mostly about how the West/Nato (that you represent) destroyed the country and the people of an otherwise peacefull community, by inflaming fascism and racism, in order to create new markets, after making it defenseless to the invasions of said markets. "terrorize, divide and rule", or, in other words "USA, Britain, Germany"

The underground caverns are created by the Natoic white-flesh-smugglers, that bring cheap working hands and and young, beautiful girls to the West, people that try to escape the hell the Nato created. My country, despite being a natoic country itself, tried to name the natoic crimes in the region, at the beggining of the 1990´s war, like financing, arming and advising the terrorists, whose actions led to the war, and the splitting of the country But my country was very powerless for the task, and the rest of the western population was voluntarily closing its eyes. By the way, it wasn´t the government of my country that ever tried to veto the Nato-council, it were just the state/public-TV-journalists, which still had the priviledge of free speech back then (in comparison to now), and dared to display on national-TV (similar to the BBC, an independent, but state-financed entity, unlike private-TV), how weapons were delivered to the terrorists through the country´s western ports and through Albania (we are talking here about army-scale-deliveries, made by gigantic ships, and not the weapons that the Taliban or the ISIS uses). It was a scandal, that ended in anti-Nato-street-protests in my country, before the reports and the journalists disappeared forever.
German universities, having the tradition of being in a country, that has already once admitted its mostrosities (unlike Britain/the US), were more critical on the subject, and have afterwards done tons of historical research, proving that many of the West´s "news" about the 1990´s war were constructed (pure propaganda), but this again, is just scientific research, that german politicians are allowed to ignore anyways (and british/US-politicians even more).
