Trump has made it very clear he will address Chinese threats. What he is also trying to do is WAKE UP Europe to start handlng issues like Ukraine themselves, which they can EASILY do - but England, constantly advising America without the power to do much about it, is I am sad to say, the most guilty today. We English should shut up and start talking seriously with France and Germany about what we need to do immediately about MASSIVE support for Ukraine. The midling efforts to date have infuriated the Americans, who have provided 2/3'rds of all military aid to-date, as well as covering Europe from Russia's nuclear threat.
Ambassador Gillmore is an excellent contributor - intelligent, sensible and articulate. And Jonathan is a really good interviewer. Greetings from Scotland.
The ambassador seems quite realistic overall wrt the threat of certain actors in the world. But his notion that Trump is a "strong" personality who won't be intimidated by Putin is laughable. Putin will do worse than intimidate Trump. He will flatter him. Manipulate him. Play him like a puppet on a string. In the years ahead, US policy is going to depend on strong personalities around Trump who can hopefully keep him somewhat grounded. Then, as a treat, he can have a military parade now and then. He loves that sh!t.
You might be right, but think on this. I feel a huge reason why Trump wanted to strange Ukraine was he didn’t want it still going on if he won. He wanted it to be Biden’s fiasco and not his. Now, Biden leaves with Ukraine strong and still in the fight. So, if he abandons Ukraine now, it will be his failure. And even if he tries to say it’s isn’t an American defeat, Russia, China and Europe are all gonna say it is. So will most Americans. Putin will crow loudly of his victory over the US- remember, he’s called this a proxy war against us from the beginning. So, a loss in Ukraine will be forever viewed as Trumps failure. And he knows that. And Trump hates to lose. He will try to bring Putin in for a peace that doesn’t make Trump look bad but Putin isn’t gonna bite. So, Trump being Trump he will get mad that Russia is embarrassing him and possibly decide to flood Ukraine with arms just to get back at him. Oh, and since he won’t want the US to pay for it, he will probably use Russian assets to do it. Let me know if you think that is a possibility
Yeah his choice of word to describe Trump in this context struck me as odd and confused me - considering the way trump fawns over authoritarian strongmen. I can't recall if he mentioned Trump's ego in this chat. I wouldn't use strong as a descriptor except to describe his ego (not the literal ego, but rather the degree to which Trump is driven by his egoism). Trump seems to demonstrate consistently his disdain for people who don't inflate his ego. One can hope for a "strong" response to Putin's likely very real disdain for Trump, if and when Trump ever recognizes it. My 2cents

Biden the biggest hater of Russia did not get you what you want despite they spent all of their military arsenals and associated with 52 countries but you are still losing. The west has nothing to intimidate the Russians while Russia hasn't fired a single shot at the west yet. This ambassador is a loser with a loud mouth who feels exceptional when he is facing his European vassals but facing the Russians he is just human beings like the Ukrainians.
I suspect Trump is in You-Know-Who's pocket and no ambassador will change that. If he wants Greenland and their rare metals, means he's given up hope he'll get Ukrainian rare metals as payment for military aid. Because he won't give them any, and moreover, will divert the attention of northern Europe, Ukraine's staunchest supporters.

@@YouAreStillNotablazewhat stymied support for Ukraine is the delayed response and slow drip of old junk sent to Ukraine by the Biden Administration. The Republicans in Congress were trying to tie support for Ukraine with securing the southern border. They didn’t appreciate how important an insecure border was to the Democrats. Each side was trying to outstrategize the other while Ukraine was in peril.
True but Biden did drag his feet for months. The US has not supplied any aircraft and only 31 tanks. This compared to over 700 tanks sent by Nato allies
I would like to bring to your attention that at the time of “$60B” being held in Congress, the White House had in hands ~$6B available to finance weapons delivery to Ukraine. But the president did not spend any $, while Ukrainians were bleeding and dying under Russian attacks. He just played political games. As of now he already admitted that he is not going be able to fulfill his obligations and promises to complete military shippings in full.
The most impressive guest. I'd been listening to every word of interview "holding my breath". Solid, factual, cool-headed. For me, the best Silicon Curtain so far.
Great interview! I agree with the Ambassador that it is 100% in the national security interests of the West and the United States to support Ukraine, but I am somewhat dubious that Donald Trump feels the same way, or that he can't be pushed around. Remember Helsinki?
@GoodMan_000 You'll get no argument from me that American corporations have too much power and control much of American government. However, that doesn't mean the Russian system is any better or more responsive to it's citizens. The opposite, in fact.
Yes, we need a global world order and respect for international law. Invading Denmark, Panama, and "annexing" Canada seems like an odd strategy to accomplish this. Americans have their own ethics and morals. The parallels to Germany in the 1930s are clear; we're just going to "annex" Poland, and we need Norway for our economic security. Sound familiar? I don't understand the 'it's just rhetoric', you mean he's a complete idiot to make these statements?
All Greenlanders want more autonomy. Some Greenlanders want independence. I don't believe it's Denmark standing in the way of that but rather serious questions about national security and economy. Faroe Islands and Åland Islands are in a roughly similar situation. Should Åland declare independence from Finland, I suspect that they'd very quickly become a Russian target. The islands have been demilitarized since the 1800's so it would be easy to build another Kaliningrad there, in the middle of the Baltic Sea, without Finland's protection. The question of national security aside, Finland doesn't have any particular attachment to the territory or even a reason to hold on to it. It's a quirk of history that it's a part of Finland in the first place. None of that means that Greenlanders want to become an overseas territory of the USA. That would likely mean less autonomy and poorer living standards. Wanting autonomy does not mean that you want to be annexed by another power. Wanting independence does not mean that you want to be controlled by someone else. The same goes for Ålanders. We have asked them, point blank, if they want to join Sweden. The answer is no. In an ideal world, they'd be independent but unfortunately for all of us, we don't live in an ideal world.
Did you notice that Denmark is part of the EU, and Nato ? So Greenland is too part of EU and Nato. I don't think Greenland population will have the power to change that. Catalonia, the Basque country, Scotland, Flanders, Corsica and northern Italy have all wanted independence at some point. But they quickly changed their minds when they realized what they'd be losing out on.

So I'll add that I can only wish that the same "no nonsense" approach was adopted by the politicians, especially here in Europe.
I thought he was far from clear when he talked about Trump. He must have heard Trump's refusal to use force to obtain Greenland, but he evaded the issue by pretending to appreciate that Trump had raised the issue of Greenland.
Maybe you forgot that this kind of diplomats from USA destabilise world causing bombing and regime changing for last 200 years. They use rules not law therefore no, i do not appreciate PPL WHO BREAK THE NECKS AND CALL IT DIPLOMACY
How can Trump be considered strong? He can't threaten military action, otherwise he would be involving the US in a war, which he has vowed to never do. He can't arm Ukraine more lest he use more American taxpayer money to fund a senseless, foreign war that we want no part of, which there is a mandate from the American voter not to do. What leverage does he have that would make him a strong negotiator in this scenario?
Trump does not have a mandate in any respect. He barely got elected. 1.5% more than your opponent and less than 50% of the electorate is not a mandate. More people voted against him than for him.
Amb. Gilmore has some clarity in external factors (need for NATO allies to increase defense spending and not "sleep" through the current crisis regarding putin and China), but falters when it comes to trump. trump is acting precisely as putin in in terms of dictating his "needs" regardless of aspirations of other countries (Greenland, Panama), and trump's frequent unhinged statements do nothing to inspire a sense of security from Western allies. Also, trump is NOT a strong personality - he is a bully impressed with his interpretation of strength, hence his bromances with putin, un, and similar. China is slightly different, perhaps he needs a clear 'bad guy" to blame for America's issues. A further reference to trump's weakness is how easily he was swayed by musk (I guess $277M does buy privileges), where before he railed at musk. trump is only strong with those he's got under his thumb, actually powerful personalities can roll over him.
I agree. All Putin has to do is stroke Trump's massive ego. He is SO easy to read and manipulate... I'm afraid Trump will be the downfall of both Ukraine and the NATO alliance.
Excellent interview by Jonathan with the ambassador! I just hope that his optimism re the forthcoming US administration is well founded and I hope that his comments act as a further wake up call for all of us in the West.
Don’t forget the republican house members consistently voted against funding to send arms shipments to Ukraine on the explicit orders of Trump, even though he didn’t hold any position in office. This aided the Russian war efforts.
Born and raised near The Iron Curtain. I dont want no imperialistic state that push against the fairly strange idea of people who can find their own idea what a human is. So what. Human kind is greedy, violent. Is there any hope at all?
Spot on! It's time for the Western public to be educated on history and its implications for the present and therefore the future. The Ambassador recognises the threat completely and has articulated it very well in this podcast.
Thank you for letting Amb. Gilmore share his competent opinion with your audience! Hope it will be heard by many people capable to make a difference! It is in interests of United States, the West, and entire World do not repeat mistakes of WWII beginning.
The irony of Putin’s written and public use of the genocidal phrase “the Ukrainian question” is that the REAL question is the Russian Question: unlike Nazi Germany the Russian Empire was never held accountable for its 20th Century mass murders, war crimes, genocides, ethnic cleansings, illegal invasions and occupations, mass deportations, etc. ad nauseam. SO instead of reforming after 1991 it regressed back into (many would say continued) its authoritarian, land imperialist, ethnic cleansing, mass murdering and Police State ways - which is THE PROBLEM and *therefore* the real question for the West is how to finally and forever solve this Russian Question/Problem. The *obvious* and *only* answer is the complete defeat of the Fascist Putin Regime which is the only thing that will force Russia to finally change and become somewhat normal. Or at least not perpetually obsessively land imperialist. Conservative GOP commenter here.
Fantastic interview, well informed and logical with truthful and honest insights discussed that made sense. I hope our UK Government were listening to this because they haven't woken up to the reality of what is happening. UK citizens should be concerned about their lack of urgency especially regarding increasing defence spending. They know we should be increasing it but they're not going to consider for another 5 years according to the Saturday Mail today. Imho if this is true the Government appears to be failing in its duty to protect the people. They have to act now.
Great to have a brilliant knowledgeable Republican supporter of Ukraine. I pray he can convince Trump and the new administration that helping Ukraine win will avoid WWIII and discourage China from invading Taiwan.
Mr. Gilmore says that Ukraine, as a sovereign, independent nation should be free to enter into military alliances with any country it chooses. If that is so, then why was the US in 1962 prepared to invade a sovereign, independent nation name Cuba and risk nuclear war for becoming an ally of the USSR which resulted in Soviet missiles placed in Cuba that could threaten the US? What if Mexico, a sovereign, independent nation entered into a military alliance with China that would allow for Chinese forces including missiles to be placed in a country right on our border? Would the US object to this or take any action to eliminate such a threat? According to Mr. Gilmore's view we (the US) would not be justified in taking any action at all! When it comes to nations' rights to enter into alliances, there is clearly a double standard - US security concerns justify taking whatever action it sees as necessary to eliminate the threat whereas if other countries (like Russia) act to eliminate the threat they are condemned as being brutal expansionist aggressors. After many years of NATO expansion following the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, Russia made it very clear years ago that it would consider NATO expansion into Ukraine (as well as Georgia and Belarus) as a serious existential threat to its security which it certainly is. Yet, according to MR. Gilmore such concerns on the part of Russia are phony excuses made to justify its aggressive expansionist goals. The US has a long and rich history of invading sovereign nations as well as facilitating coups in countries that we (the US) consider to be threats to either our security or to our business concerns (e.g. the overthrow of democratically elected Allende President of Chile to cite just one example). Yet, when the US acts in such a way I assume that Mr. Gilmore considers it completely justified. Why US policy makers cannot see the danger in taking such a position is baffling to me.
Yes, clear, sober answers (as someone else comments.). The only thing I think he is wrong about is in calling Trump “is stronger personality.” He is a showman and will judge his role in Ukraine according to whatever personal short-term ratings he can accrue in his show - - which does not have the kind of fixed principles that the ambassador espouses.
You are absolutely correct This is delusional at best He states Putin triggered the war America triggered the war lead by Victoria Newland and her cronies These people need to Do some homework and wake up This war never had to happen and there has been numerous times it could have been stopped without the loss of any lives or land All Ukraine had to do was stay out of NATO All of the land taken by Russia will Never be taken back now All what these people want is to make money selling weapons Listen to Daniel Davis Deep Dive. How Biden NATO and the west destroyed Ukraine
I think the problem is so bad that, regardless of Russia either losing or winning the war, it has been so costly and disrupting that any real benefit that can come from it either can't be capitalized on, or has gone with the wind at this point. The economy is in shambles, massive loss of manpower and materiel, all those people demanding pensions, being economically isolated. Its pretty grim.
"Russia is losing the war in Ukraine" by advancing further into Ukraine ? Is that the logic ? How delusional is James Gilmore ? BTW the projection of the American expansionist ambitions through Nato on Russia is completely laughable... who's expanding in Europe.. not Russia.. but NATO.

The west has nothing to intimidate the Russians while Russia hasn't fired a single shot at the west yet. This ambassador is a loser with a loud mouth who feels exceptional when he is facing his European vassals but facing the Russians he is just human beings like the Ukrainians.
It would be the same.

The part that worried me is "US interests".
How about just "the right thing to do" instead.
One says if it were not in the USA interests, they would let Russia to continue
The other says they will do the right thing even if its NOT in their interests.
I know which stance I trust more.
The US is by nature isolationist and its forays into world geopolitics is always on the basis that it is in the American interest. Frankly, I would much prefer the US always acts in it own self interest as that is much more predictable than doing the 'right' thing. The definition of what the 'right thing to do' is will vary from administration to administration, from person to person even. Whereas there is seldom any argument on a hard-nosed accounting of what is in the interest of the United States.
@@dadananda EXCEPT when you are not in the USA. The USA too often ignores the fact that other countries have rights, the people in those countries have rights.

Sometimes the best way to convince isolationists that they should support someone is to prove that those action are in their best interests.

I feel like he spent so much time looking outward, he missed what is happening right on his doorstep.

He just lied about what's stymied support to Ukraine to protect his party.
@@YouAreStillNotablazewhat stymied support for Ukraine is the delayed response and slow drip of old junk sent to Ukraine by the Biden Administration. Congress approved a $65 billion aid package last April and as of November Ukraine had only received 10% of it. He's still only doling out little bits at a time.

An excellent conversation. There is hope. Thank you.
But it wasn't Biden who delayed support for Ukraine; it was Trump, MAGA and Speaker Mike Johnson who held up the 60 bn$ of aid.
Exactly.
There is a lot to be said about the quality of help and rules like no attacking russia proper with NATO sourced weapons.

Yes, Trump is a complete idiot.
Ohoh whe i see "global" order i see amarocan policeman...
No way.
Word!

Edit: I just noticed Jonathan said basically the same thing at the end of the podcast.
Thank you, Mr Gilmore.
We need you and others like you to talk sence to the poeple in charge ❤
100% correct. 🙂

I agree.., there is no way the west should offer Putin a cease fire…. Putin should be made to reap what he has sowed

Fantastic interview, well informed and logical with truthful and honest insights discussed that made sense. I hope our UK Government were listening to this because they haven't woken up to the reality of what is happening. Very good comment from Ambassador Gilmore, hopefully Trump and his inner circle listen to every word of his.
One of your most important interviews yet, Jonathan. A man at the grinding edges of the geopolitical tectonic plates. Thanks for that.
I remember Amb. Gilmore, he's always been one of the good guys.

Mr Gilmore, truly spoken from a great and wise person with deep insight.
When I think a video is really important I share it with all my friends. I am doing so with this one. I agree with every word
"Russia is losing the war in Ukraine" by advancing further into Ukraine ? Is that the logic ?
How delusional is James Gilmore ?
