    Love the FMR comps I have 3 of them. The RNC, the yellow Vintage one and the RNL leveler. All three are a GREAT VALUE!! The yellow 6A vintage one is a real secret weapon for drums and anything you want to sound more saturated and analog, its a feedback comp so you get that gooey low end we all like and it can shape a signal to sit perfectly in a mix, I use it on bass and background vocals all the time. The RNC was my go to tracking comp for years since it was so easy to dial in and compact enough t sit on the console so I could quickly patch it in for overdubs. But now I need to try this for myself, I never thought of it as a bus comp!!!

      I have been wanting the other compressors they make for a long time. It's probably time to shuffle some gear around and try them. Thanks for the recommendation. I want the yellow one, the PBC something 😎

      @@TwinCreekAudio All of them are great, and very reasonable in price so you can't go wrong with FMR comps or the preamps. They have 500 series modules as well if I remember correctly.

      @@joesalyers I'd defintely like to try the Leveler as well. I've always been a fan of their products. Very clever designs that produce high quality results.

    I use both RNLA and RNC even in my mastering chain. RNLA with lowest ration possible, but bigger than 1, low treshold to keep it compressing all the time. Give's nice glue and color without kiling the dynamics and transients, and next in the chain is RNC for everything else using supernice mode (manual says this mode is created particulary for mastering), depends on the situation.

      I don't have an RNLA but it sounds like your setup works really well. I will sometimes follow the RNC in super nice mode with an ART Dial Limiter to catch the peaks.

    This channel has been a wealth of good information. Thanks mate

      Thank you! I'm happy you find the videos useful. That's the main reason I started this channel. There just isn't enough information on some kinds of analog gear.

    Nice video as always! The FMR comps are super solid performer, a great value, and it's nice to see them get some love. All my best and cheers from South Wales, NY, USA! -chaz

      I've had my RNC so long I don't remember when I got it. Its always being used and I've used it in a few videos before but I recently rediscovered it. It's the compressor on my voice track in almost all of my videos as well. It completely lives up to its name. It's a really very nice compressor in my opinion.

    Dig it. I hardly ever use Super Nice mode for some reason- I tend to like to hear the comp working a bit. Kitty Cat approved!

      I use it in Super Nice Mode on my voice track for most videos set to compress quite bit. I like it on kick on non super nice mode.

    Hi there when i use both my unit's now ? the gain reduction meter lights light up fast and sort of hold's themselves slower when turning off any idea why ? like its not quick lights on and off ?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  4 місяці тому +1

      That sounds like the release time is too slow. It could also indicate a problem with the detector circuit or it could just be the meters if the audio doesn't show the problem.

      @@TwinCreekAudioThanks for your feed back ! Yes i messed around with it some more, and its fine with both units, yes the release if turned up too full was the reason, which of course shows in real time the slow release time ! thanks again ! this is what happens when i don't use my equipment more often LOL ! Also wanted to point out, if in nice mode its a little slower but i assume it could be because of the cascade mode being 2 or 3 compressors working together !

    I've just got my hands on one, I've had the RNLA for some years which sounds really good on the master. I'm using the RNC on an aux send on my mixwizard which took me a while to get my head around as there are no returns! I understand sidechaining but not quite got my head round it with hardware, how do you use it with the eq? Do you use an insert cable from a subgroup?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  Рік тому +2

      I have a cheap Radio Shack graphic EQ and I just connect the RNC sidechain to that with an insert cable. Gives me full control of the sidechain EQ and the audio doesn't pass through the EQ itself so it doesn't matter that it's a cheap EQ as much. I mainly use it to cut some low end out of the Compression detector like the High Pass options on a lot of the SSL Bus Compressor style plugins. The side chain connection on the RNC is there to allow you to EQ the detector of the compressor so basically to fine tune which frequencies you want compressed more or less. I run the RNC on the master bus though I will use other busses for things like parallel compression. I am actually working on a video today about that. Hope to have that out by tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest. Thanks so much for the question. I think it's a really interesting topic to discuss and something I use all the time with the RNC and other compressors.

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  8 місяців тому

      @dfasht1304 You are correct. The sidechain involves the detector circuit so no audio passes through it. It controls the compression circuit where the audio is processed. So yes, the compression acts on the entire signal but you can control which frequencies the detector uses and that changes how much the entire signal is compressed. a Multiband compressor will have different detector circuits for each band so those will compress each specified frequency range independently. The RNC isn't a a multiband compressor but it has a side chain connection for an external EQ which allows more control to fine tune the compression.

    Is the side chain stereo as well

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  25 днів тому

      @@montanamaxxamillion the way it's wired it has to be mono but it's a stereo compressor without a mono mode and the left and right settings, side chain etc would all be matching anyway.

  • @bob.bobman

    How do you setup the graphic eq as a side chain?

    • @TwinCreekAudio
      @TwinCreekAudio  7 місяців тому

      Connect the side chain output to the EQ input and the EQ out to the side chain input. Sometimes the side chain is on a single TRS jack so you'd use an insert cable.

    • @bob.bobman
      @bob.bobman 7 місяців тому

      @@TwinCreekAudio so from the back of the RNC I could run a trs cable from the Sidechain port to the input\output of an EQ (however that is configured on the EQ) correct? I just looked it up on FMR website they have nice diagram in the FAQ section. Thanks for the tip.
