1974 F350 Custom - Will It Run Again?

  • This is a quick overview of our 1974 F350 Custom dually pickup. It's a beast... Currently sitting idle with a jumped timing chain (my armchair diagnosis), I've begun repairs by pulling off the PS pump and alternator. I'm hoping for no engine damage, so I can get it back in service for heavy hauling of debris... you know, the kind of stuff you wouldn't want in your plastic bed Tacoma!     I ran across the dreaded left hand thread lugs on ONE rim of my 1984 F250. Left Rear rim. I swapped in Right hand thread ones.

      Yeah, unfortunately had to sell it. My buddy will get it fixed up some day.

    Those tires make the truck now. Talk about increasing the value of the vehicle.
    Greasy acid flashback to 1978.
    My dad had run his '74 F250 Custom into the ground. Bought it new and never did any maintenance on it.
    Figured I'd get it going again for my use. Problem I ran into was that VIN showed it was an F350.
    So when it came to doing the calipers that turned into a challenge.
    And then there were the 'split rims'...
    Went to the boneyard and retrieved a set of springs for a F250, that helped very little.
    And don't get me going on the 360CI. Gallons to the mile...

    Now what you need to find is a nice 390 in a crate in the corner of a barn - somewhere. ☺️

      Will eventually turn it into a 390, have the crank already. Plenty part number goofs between F250 and F350. I Beam bushings called out for F350 were wrong, had to use ones called for F250. Numbers on truck confirm F350 custom, paint, engine, axle, etc.

    Beautiful truck, I had the chance to choose that exact truck or a 1986 f350 7.5. I ended up choosing the 7.5. Definitely was a hard choice.

      Faced with the same choice I think I would have chosen the same as you. For this vehicle there was no choice, it was given to me

    The NP435 and the T18 both have UNsynchronized 1st.(granny) gears ! The T19 (found in Int'l Scouts) has a Synchronized 1st. granny gear !

      Yeah, it's definitely unsynchronized in this one. Can't imagine shifting back into 1st once moving.

    8:21 that axle has shock mounts. I am sure from the factory it had shocks somewhere. Even my old Dodges the most notorious or war wagon riding pickups have shock absorbers. These trucks are made to work so load them up and work em like they should!

      I see where you mean, inboard near the diff. I don't remember there being anything on the body for the other end, but now I will have to get under there and look!

      @@EngineersWorkshop Well someone has been there before anyway. Supposed to just be Lh threads on Lh side. It may not even be the original axle to the truck.

      Engineers Workshop my1966 f 350 dually DOES NOT have rear shock mounts either. It never had them

    Nice truck. Years back you could get crate engines for fair prices but now god nos what they are. Be a good machine truck with a nice jib crane and an out rigger set. Even a drop deck trailer towed behind. I had planned on building one till my body said no.

      Got a 390 crank ready for it if there's damage. One way or another it will run again, as a 360 or 390

    25 years ago, I had a 1974 F100, 360 4spd. Not sure of the transmission. T-18, T-19, or NP435. First gear, pedal to the floor, it would only do 5 mph. This ole girl is nice

      Sounds like my NP 435. First gear is about 6.5 to 1. Goes about 5mph and sounds like the engine is going to explode...

    I just bought the same truck in black, but with a newer looking flatbed. Not sure if it's the orginal. It's in preety damn good condition, but still going to be putting in some work on it.

      75 was in far better shape. Nothing was Rotted out. You have a lot of work. It was also a Dump Bed.

    A true truck tire shop should be able to change them since many eighteen wheelers still use a “split” rim. These local small car tire shops or big box tire shops won’t do it they need a cage to put wheel in. It does take an experienced tire man to do it.

    That type of rim is a lock ring. They’re not a true split rim and really aren’t dangerous a good truck tire shop can easily change them.

      A shop here said no one would touch them. Since the fronts were solid, it was just a matter of finding four more. I still have the original rears if anyone wants them!

    Wow I have the twin to that truck almost down to the rust. Did Ford put the running boards on?

      I have no history for the vehicle, but they look aftermarket. Ford would have done a better job.

    I'm pretty sure I wouldn't trust that master cylinder for very long.... Nice truck though.

      So far it's holding fluid, no sinking pedal. Will replace if necessary. Thanks for the interest!

      Crank has a tight spot. Need to loosen valve train and see if it goes away. Not looking good though..
