When I recently watched Brady Haran‘s video on (the death of) Steven Weinberg, someone left a comment along the lines of „We must save Kip Thorne at all cost.“ Made me smile. The notion that some people are more precious than others. And we can sometimes agree on who they are. Today I listened to the „Fall of Civilizations“-Podcast (The Inca episode), and in it is a scene about the execution of the last Inca-King by the Spaniards in Peru, how the whole city square was black with more than ten thousand people all mourning and wailing for their last indigenous leader, and he raised his hands and clapped, and there was utter silence, and then he spoke his last words. Whenever I come here to your channel, you command my attention, and you bring forth my reverence. It’s a complete natural act. And yet the more ways I use to describe it, the less defensible it seems: you are an icon. An icon of wonder, of childlike innocence, calming my storm, renewing my spirit, refreshing my powers. When it’s late in the night as I watch your videos, they put me in an almost religious mood.
