Having been born and raised in Venezuela, I have mixed feelings when I watch these videos. The Venezuela I knew was from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. I'm saddened to see the total abandonment of places like Margarita yet am happy to see the beauty of the country hasn't changed at all. And the genuine kindness of most of the Venezuelans that Kurt has met along the way. As well as the kindness and generosity he's extended to people he's met during his travels. Props to Kurt for having the "bolas" to go to places most "gringos" wouldn't dare go to like Petare. Never say never but I doubt I'll be going back to Venezuela any time soon. Thanks Kurt for posting these videos. They've brought so many great memories. Envious of the Polar's and Zulia's you've drained!

I went to Margarita on the ferry in 1998 when I went to visit my college friend Eduardo, who was from Caracas. Spent 5 days at a beach front resort close to the Aquarium and water park. The place was a booming party town. The year after, Eduardo’s family fled Venezuela and moved to Boston. They never returned.

Funny I'm visiting family in Panama and we just came back from Portabello which used to be a thriving Carribean beach town when the US military had a presence in the country. Sadly similar story but different circumstances.
My wife (then girlfriend) and I vacationed on Margarita Island in 1990. It was a lively, beautiful place. Great restaurants and hotels. Sad to see it in that condition. We had a fantastic time there. I hope things change in the future.
