Gouldian finches are easier to take care of. Of course they require a huge cage to fly around in since they aren't usually the type of bird you'd play with. They do require their cage to be cleaned and to be given fruits and veggies besides just seeds, just like every single bird!
Females have duller colors. The males a very brightly colored. For example, the breast of females is usually a dull pink to liliac color. Their green is more olive-grey-ish and for red face forms, a dull rusty red. ( black faces stay the same ) ( Caveats : Yellow backs and White backs are harder to tell apart. Also, there is a liliac mutation, so those males' breat is liliac and those females a very dull pale pink. On the other hand some breeders selected for more intensely colored females and those in black head forms are pretty hard to tell from males. The red face forms are easier to tell apart. ) Youngs cannot be told apart untill they moult into their adult feathers ( moult usually starts at around 4 months, and lasts at least one month, and cooler temps slow the moult down). Also, when they are in condition to breed, the males dance and sing, their beak becomes increasingly red. The beak of females in breeding conditions turn increasingly black. They don't sing and don't "jump" ( dance ). Both sexes with lower and shake their heads to greet and court. Gouldian finches are amasing jewels.
The dazzling colors on these finches are hard to believe. I wish beautiful birds like this could live in Washington State US.
