I like to think of the transition from the first Chozo Ruins theme to this one as representing Samus (and the player) getting more comfortable with the Ruins.

I honestly wish some other "sci-fi" games would incorporate the concept or make new versions of it. Scanning everything was one of my favorite parts of the whole series, quality of info gathered be damned. It's actually a great feature from a design standpoint, allowing players who like to take things slowly and learn all there is to know to do so while also letting more action-focused players blaze through without having to scan anything aside from the mandatory puzzles/switches.

    • @MrCompassionate01
      @MrCompassionate01 2 роки тому +30

It's also a great way to convey story, lore and information without stopping the player. A lot of developers struggle to figure out how to tell players stuff and they try several solutions
Solution A: Audiolog pickups, but that means players either have to sit there listening to it patiently or play while listening, but the audio could get drowned out by gameplay
Solution B: NPCs talk to the player, but this has all the problems the audiologs have without the players having the option to turn it off, bad for repeat playthroughs
Solution C: Text logs, but that means the players need to sit totally still and read paragraphs of text instead of playing the game
Metroid Prime condenses all the worldbuilding, lore and story into 1 or 2 sentence textlogs split up into little peices all over the gameworld via the Scanning mechanic. Players can choose to use the scanner or not. If they choose to use the scanner they'll peice together an interesting little story about the world and ecosystem, if not they just play a super fun game.
Somehow in 2002 Metroid Prime solved the information conveyance problem videogame developers struggle with to this day without using a single NPC, audiolog or narrative cutscene.

Not only that, but if you scanned an enemy during a fight, you'd often discover a weak-point and have a new aim-point that made the fight easier. That and some useful information about their move set. IT really rewarded you for scanning everything as well as not jumping in guns blazing.

It's why I like Dark Souls. Optional story basically, you can just play for pure gameplay with minimal interuptions.

scanning everything like a crazy nerd was half the fun for me for the whole metroid prime series as a kid. learning about the world, slowly walking to take in the sights, but already ready to exploit an enemy's weakness

First I played Medal of Honor, Underground, Frontline, European Assault, Vanguard... I'm really good at FPS games, I love the games I just mentioned. But always tried to explore areas for hidden rooms, items and ammo. Then, one day, I played Metroid Prime... and I lost my heart. Now it belongs to Metroid and Samus. It was a nice transition due to the fact that I already had the skills needed for FPS games

I remember my first exposure to this track with the gameplay trailer of Metroid Prime. It was part of the extras within the Gamecube release of Ocarina of Time/Master Quest, if memory serves.
I remember the trailer as a montage of exploration, combat, and isolation on an alien hostile world. No narrating voice tracks, no context providing subtitles, just short interconnected segments of Samus using the various beams, visors, and morph ball modes. With this track in the background, I was in awe.
Then it ends, with Samus overwhelmed by the enemy on all sides, her visor glitching out with her death cry. Title reveal, release Date 2002, fade to black while the song ends.
Chills. Absolute Chills. Felt more like a grim sci fi horror game than action/adventure.
When I finally played Prime, it was a mind-blowing experience, through and through.
...Space Pirate Base still creeps me out, though. And the metroids still keep me on absolute edge (specially the hunter variants).

    >Take Samus's POV
    >Pursue Ridley after discovering he was at the space base orbiting the planet Tallon IV where a distress call was issued, with no other crew there
    >Land on the unknown planet
    >Explore everything by scanning the fauna and flora, as well as technological systems and control panels
    >Discover mysteries, including ruins and temples of an ancient civilization that seemed to inhabit, or at least use, the location as a base
    >Advance through ancient shrines and remains from a mysterious past with a contrast of advanced technology implemented
    >Do all this + continuing with more mysteries to decipher by reading prophecies and detecting more problems to solve
    >Progress and reestablish greater power and greater protection
    >Now, with less tension and more safety, explore the technological ruins with this banger:
(PS.: I swear, if Metroid ever gets a movie adaptation, Daft Punk needs to return just to make a absurdly badass sci-fi soundtrack again)

I used to wander the beginning areas of these ruins when I was like 2 years old. I don't think I went much of anywhere, but the art and music was captivating as I was developing my senses. And, I was really scared of the beetles that burst from the ground in the sand. So I stayed stuck around the first save station, endlessly blasting eye lazers and those flies. I grew up on this game.
