In the 70s, the carrot cake is made packed with lots of radish/white carrots but not anymore. Hawkers remove carrots from the “kueh” to reduce costs and labour. Many bought the “kueh” made in factory using rice flour these days.😢 Quality has gone done. I can’t find those that I ate as a child. They shouldn’t be calling this dish white carrot cake since there aren’t any carrots. I like this episode and had fun watching the reviews of the carrot cake. It’s funny as I recall those I ate as a child was never burnt. Strange that people has become more accepting of burnt food these days . Thank u very much…
There's no fried carrot cake in the past. In the past, it was called 炒粿.... solely fried by the teochew. Only in the late 80s, hokkien people ventured into this trade, add a few strains of carrot into it and called it fried carrot cake
Bukit Timah is original version and taste much better. There was another original at Zion Road but not sure whether it is still there. Original version is crispy and normally costs more per plate.
Hi Eros, I only like to eat white carrot cake to me clementi hawker centre not so nice. I like the one at Boon Lay Place Food Village. That stall is facing the car park and the stall owner is a young guy. Yes by the way the way you show us how they fried the carrot cake very cute .👍👍👌👌👏👏💖💖
Would not say it is the best stall in Singapore, becos everyone has their own preference, but from a comfort food point of view as far as I m concerned, I will definitely eat whenever I m at clementi food center, been eating since the late 80s👍👍👍
There's another stall in Changi V, yet sells very good fried carrot cake. Especially with lots of garlic n dried chai po. It's a very good combination.
Among the two you introduce, I prefer the Bukit Timah hawker center, He Zhong carrot cake. I like it thick with golden crisy eggs on it. Another store is Zion Road 老吴 fried carrot cake, only sell in the evening. However the cake is softer and flatter. Yishun Blk 618 also got one store but sell until very "haolian". Their is white carrot cake with alot of radish on top. They will tell you to wait 60mins on weekdays and 90mins on weekends.
