I came across some really nice ‘Surfite’ cabochons and had to grab them. Same concept as Fordite, except from the making of surfboards. You can imagine all the vibrant colors they use.
The stuff like this which has a lot of white in it is post-1978 material that I believe is now referred to as Detroitite. True Fordite is lead based and has more vibrant colors partly due to the lead, but also because car makers back then used a wider range of colors that were brighter. Todays cars are white, black, gray, silver. Detroitite while not processing the gloss and dazzling effects of Fordite nevertheless has an understated quality. I purchased some Fordite 40 years ago and still am not sure hoe I want to cut it.
