My son decided to join the Mormon church so he could marry his LDS girlfriend. For the records, they both left the church after a couple of years. But, my wife and I who raised him, who changed his poopy diapers, who put him through school and comforted him when he cried, who taught him to be an honest caring adult. We were not worthy to simply sit in the audience and witness their marriage. What a crock of bull shit. Like I said, they both left the church soon after that.

@@paperbag3347 Thanks for the questions. I hope I am able to answer them. My sons girlfriend (wife) was raised pretty strict Mormon. We raised our son to think for himself, and we talked about the historic, documented facts about religion. But, he was free to follow what he thought the right way. We weren't going to brain wash him like religions with their children, but, we lived in Salt lake and most of his friends growing up were Mormons. His girlfriend was Mormon and, because we taught him to think for himself, we talked to him about religion, but it was his own decision. I would be no different than the religious fanatic's if I was to "prevent" him from joining the Mormons. Anyhow, when he was just out of high school and the hormones were raging, he joined the Momons because his girlfriend wanted him to. But, it wasn't long till his wife started questioning thing and together they both left the church. That was one of the best days in all of our lives, all of us were glad, not only my wife and I but he and his wife felt that awful elephant walk off of their back. They were so happy. He never really believed it and when his wife came to realize the crap of lies that she had been fed, she quickly left the church and was totally pissed off at the crap she had been fed. It was interesting how quickly she left the church. It was like she had been sheltered and never really looked into it, but when she grew up and started exploring other ideas, she very quickly was out. She said that what made her start thinking beyond just church things was hen she started listening to Ted Talks. They weren't anti Mormon or even anti religion, they simply showed her that there is a wonderful, exciting world out there that she had never known about. It really was a quick transition. Fortunately, she remained very close to her family and they seemed to be OK with her decision.
They are both happy, atheists with 3 kids that are being raised to think for themselves. Maybe they will join a cult (I mean church), but likely will stay free thinking free spirits. They are not being indoctrinated to believe, but are being taught to use critical thinking, reason tings and do what you have logically thought to be the best way. Funny how that kind of thinking has kept them away from religion!

I went thru the Mormon temple in '82'; a requirement for going on a Mormon mission! The Endowment was filled with mind control! The part that disturbed me most was the three forms of execution for revealing the signs and tokens give in the endowment! Symbolizing slitting ones throat, ones chest and ones stomach for revealing these hand gestures and accompanying phrases! I hear they have since be removed! I had a feeling of nausea after leaving the temple while contemplating these potential forms of execution! I had a testimony that the church was true, but this act chipped away at my testimony during my mission! Its tough to grow up in a nurturing society where people are so wonderful to you and then awaken to such an experience that is considered desirable and sacred within the religion! While others may love it and thrive in it, for me the realization it is a cult became overwhelming and a life style I couldn't live! A troubling mind control experience!

I was told by the bishop that I couldn't be helped by the him because I wasn't in his ward. When I got housing in April I returned to the church asking for rides for myself and my service dog. The elders quorum president ghosted me and wouldn't return my phone calls. I called the bishop, explained it to him, and promptly was ghosted by the bishop. I'll point out my service dog is of the pitbull breed and I did inform both of them of that. So to make a long story short, you deciding to not pay tithe to avoid homelessness was the best choice. At what point is a religion a pyramid scheme and at what point should federal officials change the laws? Voter elect politicians who may address such injustices in our future. Especially where by 2034 to 2036 only some 74 cents will be coming available for payout on every dollar of social security promised! Changes in the tax structure will be demanded by voters! The money had been in my account for less than 24 hours before being sent into the school's pockets. At the time, I couldn't afford to pay $2 to go to the movies with my friends because my art books and supplies cost hundreds of dollars every semester, and I had to scrape just to buy dollar store groceries. The tithing I had to pay was on $1800 and I didn't even have $10 most days until I got paid every other week at my $7/hour on-campus job (which I did in addition to full time schoolwork). Where was I supposed to get $180? It might as well have been a million.

The Ancient Christian Church ran its own Social Services Agency. The Ancient Church fed, clothed, and housed the "less fortunate". These Monies originated from the Tithe. The Tithe also paid for necessary items.
It was important to note that the Ancient Christian Church did not refuse access to services for failure to Tithe.
Rome hated the fact that Christians managed to do what they could not do (Does this sound familiar today - Govt shutting down Church based orgs and systems?).
I do agree that mandating a tithe (if you do not - no entry into the Church) is completely wrong. Also, one should not have to "prove their worth" to enter the Church. The whole idea behind worshiping a superior deity is to learn to be a better person and learn to hold said truths more (to one's personal life and thus physically represent that Religion's doctrines to the world).

The church taught me stuff like, material success is an indication that you're keeping the commandments, or being socially vibrant means that you're full of the spirit. There's hundreds of stuff like this and it places an unreasonable amount of pressure on members who don't have many of these traits or attributes naturally. I was totally exhausted trying to be what they wanted. Not only that but there's very little heart to heart compassion. They say nice things but it's basically scripted. If I was hurt, I could usually predict what they would say. And how can I blame them? They too were taught that who they are is not ok. You can be a quiet introvert who struggles with relationships, but you're not allowed to be comfortable in that state. You can lack ambition and still be a member, but don't expect any respect or acknowledgement that you exist. I really feel for those who were born into this organization. @@BrianTerrill Hello Brian, I am sorry that I did not see your reply until now. I barely check my youtube messages.
I am sorry that you have encountered some Evangelical Christians who boast in and clings to works. It is not uncommon.
I am a Lutheran pastor. Lutherans are not typical Evangelicals who urge people to "make decisions" or "live a worthy life." We interpret and understand the Scripture through the lens called "Law and Gospel". The LAW also accuses us. The LAW tells us what to do, and what not to do. The Law is like parenting, that we, as children, are given a ton of "do's" and "dont's". But the Law does not and cannot save us. Sure, maybe I don't cuss at people outwardly, but even as a pastor, I cuss at people in my heart. I have violated the LAW. The ladder of the LAW is too high and risky for me to climb to heaven. The condemnation of the LAW accuses me and more importantly, points me to Christ.
Now, Gospel kicks in. Gospel demands nothing. Absolutely nothing. Jesus comes to seek and save the sinners. Jesus alone saves. Have faith in Christ.
God does not need my good works, BUT my neighbors do.
God does not really care about my "sh*t, fu*k, cu*t," my neighbors do.
We do not try to do good to please God, we do that to love our neighbors.
Your evangelical friend mixed up Law and Gospel.
At the end, my friend, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, by his authority and in his stead, I declare the entire forgiveness of your sins, in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Brother, go in peace which Christ alone gives.

I left the LDS faith in 2013 and one of the most painful aspects of leaving was the acceptance that I would be barred from seeing my children get married. My daughter is getting married on May 6th and even though now I have accepted that I won’t witness the marriage it still hurts. This will be the second child of mine who’s wedding I’m banned from witnessing.
Its ironic that for a church that emphasizes the family is the only church that prohibits non believing parents from seeing their own children get married.
It also reminds me of the time when we both had temple recommends yet my wife was barred from seeing her brother get married simply because she forgot her recommend. Your right it’s all messed up. Even though the transition was painful I don’t regret leaving the LDS church for a moment.

Here's a question about the wife who forgot her Temple recommend? The husband who I assume is a high priesthood holder and other family members who are there all have to be honest and trustworthy to get there Temple recommends. So if the Husband and family members have to be honest and trustworthy, seems the temple worker could just say. Brother so and so do you give your word you wife is Temple worthy and has a recommend. Nope, not that simple. The church loves to punish and create lack of trust and call people out on the carpet because they fail. She didn't fail, she simply forgot her Temple recommend. Yet she was punished.

My wife had only been a member for just shy of a year when we got married, but she got special dispensation to be married in the temple. Meanwhile, her Methodist parents weren't there to see their only child get married, and the marriage event they had probably dreamed about since she was born just never happened. I didn't push her either way--but if we had it to do over again, they would have had the marriage situation they dreamed about, and we would have adjusted one way or another subsequently, regardless of "activity" or involvement with "the Church."

That story about their recommend being removed for accidentally seeing p*rn really shocked me. One time during a temple recommend interview, I told my bishop about my p*rnography addiction that I had struggled with for years. I thought that I wouldn’t be able to renew my recommend because I wasn’t worthy. But he just kind of shrugged and said that if I repented it would be ok. Then he gave me a new recommend. Offered me no help to recover from my addiction. He didn’t even tell me what the repentance process was for it. You would think that men called of God would be consistent if they’re doing His will. But every bishop I saw told me something different. It’s almost like they’re really just telling you their opinion and not words from God who is “always the same.” Not long after that, the bishop was excommunicated because it was revealed that he committed adultery. I went through all of this as a young teen, and now I have a hard time trusting the leaders in church anymore.

He told me not to do my calling, take the sacrament, speak or pray in church etc. until I renewed my recommend and he could not tell me when that might be. Ye Gawds I wish I had never went back again or even went back to church for that matter. Every Sunday I wondered WTH was wrong with ME! My mother , whom I loved dearly, paid her tithing every month without fail until she was 90. She never missed. Never once though, did she ever offer one of her grand kids a couple of hundred dollars to buy something that they wanted or needed as they grew up. I never said anything to her but it used to bother me how determined she was in making certain that the church got it's money but overlooked that the kids could have used that money once in awhile. Now all of a sudden the church leaders tell us, "the church doesn't need the money but you need the blessings of paying it". Ohhhhh, now the church doesn't need it, and I don't need the blessings. So now I can attend the temple without the necessary recommend?

My name is still on the rolls of the church but I consider myself an ex-Mormon. The topic of discernment is a good one. Someone I know was accused of child molestation by his wife when their marriage (at the temple) was falling apart. Having known that man since we were kids I didn't think he was capable of doing something like that. His now ex-wife was just trying to hurt him, and she did. But the bishop and everybody else in church believed her and not him. He even spent time in jail, his wife testifying against him. It never even bothered her, and she was a faithful Mormon. The bishop and his counselors were supposed to have the gift of discernment but they couldn't tell who was lying. So the man got excommunicated, went to jail, lost his job, and couldn't see his adopted son. The best thing to come out of this situation was his wife divorcing him. A true blessing, as was his excommunication, although he still believes in the church. As it turned out, the "victim" of the molestation, now grown up, denied that it had ever happened and said she was coerced into bearing false witness. She now hates the woman who put her up to it. But too late for the real victim, the falsely accused. Nothing happened to the ex-wife, neither at church nor with the police for her lying. What shook my faith years ago was when Mark Hofman sold counterfeit documents to the top church leadership. He fooled even the "prophet" himself. If their discernment is not real, what other things about the church are false?

The next day I woke up early and my father drove me over to the Chapel to meet everyone and then carpool up. I arrived a few minutes early but no one was there. We waited to tell about five after and no one ever showed up and we went home thinking “they are not getting in without the recommend.”
Turns out all the other youth thought it would be funny to leave even earlier and NOT tell me, so the whole gang drove up to the L.A. Temple which is about a 3-hour drive one way.

..... It’s been a day and I still can’t wrap my mind around this, they would make her pay, yet she would qualify for food from the bishops welfare house, wouldn’t it be easier just to let her keep the money, spare her having to ask for help from the church to feed her. - Manipulation tactics are a crime against humanity. Shame on them!

I know one case where an RM was getting married. His dad had not paid tithing for a while so was denied a temple recommend renewal. The bishop told him the only way to get the recommend was to pay back tithing owed. The stake president backed up the bishop. The father could not afford it. He had to borrow the money from the bank, pay the back tithing and get the recommend so he could attend his son's sealing at the temple.

Great video. I've always thought getting my schoolmates to go to SLC temple to baptize the dead was the creepiest thing. Then later in life a coworker told me he was going to do that for me and my sister. I said no and he said I had no choice.

To summarize: don’t marry in the temple. In fact, I can’t recommend joining. Seriously there are too many self righteous crazies. I’ve been through this baloney myself. Much happier out.

I feel so less alone by watching such videos and the comments.. I have been denied a temple recommend before my wedding because as a poor student, I could not tithe every month. I had to withdraw all my money left in order to be able to marry my husband. I started questioning my faith at this moment. I always did my best to be the best person possible and would be damned because of money? In the same time, a guy in my ward forced a young woman to have sex with him but could enter the temple because he paid properly (or at least said so).. for me it was so unfair. I left this church now and feel so free and blessed in my life and just wish my husband opens his eyes some day. But as long as he does not force me back and I don't force him out, we are fine ^^
