"The Way I Talk" is inspired by the plight of the farming community in Kentucky where I grew up, where big business and the laws that protect them have vast control over my community. It is a scary thing calling into question the very thing that put food on my table and is putting food on my niece’s table (she plays the little girl in the video). Isn't that the case for every person working a factory line who is afraid to unionize? Or a fast food employee afraid to take sick leave to care for her kid? We are all expected to be thankful, not question, and shut our mouths.
I made the video for this song with the help of the following people.

Lyrics:
oh sharecropper daughter
she sings the blues of a coal miner’s son
she said that i know what you're thinking when you hear the way i talk
when you hear the way i talk
when you hear the way i talk
she said that i know what you're thinking when you hear the way i talk
when you hear the way i talk
when you hear the way i talk
and her brother's back at home tending to her daddy's land
he's farming for the businessman
who takes the profit from his hand
with calculation to the dollar of a chemical demand
no not in years took from a man
will you try hard to comprehend
and her mother heard the devil on the midday radio
she listened to him tell her she should have some more to show
but he blamed it on her neighbor at the local dollar store
a tale as old as time to turn the poor against the poor
sharecropper daughter
she sings the blues
of a coal miner's son
sharecropper daughter
she sings the blues
of a coal miner's son

Everyone loves S.G.,we love her too.Greetings from coal miner's son/NovaScotia.
Can't wait to see this played at Laurel Cove on June 10, 2023.
S.G Goodman is a new original cross between Janis Joplin, and Loretta Lynn, with maybe a little Dolly Parton mixed in. Wonderful !
“And her brother’s back at home tendin’ to her daddy’s land
He’s farming for the business man, who takes the profit from his hand
With calculation to the dollar of a chemical demand
No not in years took from a man
Will you try hard to comprehend
And her mother heard the devil on the midday radio
She listened to him tell her she should have some more to show
But he blamed it on her neighbor at the local dollar store
A tale as old as time to turn the poor against the poor.”
Truly, some damn good lyrics.
Incredible lyrics. Love it.
Those are no ordinary lyrics. Very, very good. Major discovery for me. And so began my S.G. Goodman concert.
Great lyrics! And true
CDant remember more poignant lyrics - so succint
Great victim lyrics.
This tears at my flesh.
"… And her mother heard the devil on the midday radio
She listened to him tell her she should have some more to show
But he blamed it on her neighbor at the local dollar store
A tale as old as time to turn the poor against the poor"
Thank you for creating this.
I was just coming to comment on this exact verse. This is important music. Thank you, S.G. Goodman
I’ll be playing this on my show... we’re a non-profit community radio station in Knoxville, TN
Noah Bediance So , have you played it on your radio show yet ? If so , was it a huge hit ? Lots of positive response ? I'm really rooting for this young, brilliant woman . How lucky the first music agent (with integrity...) to promote her is/will be . Let's all cross fingers they don't try to change a thing ! Not a thing .
The PBS NEWSHOUR got me here...and for that, I'm grateful.
ditto
She absolutely captivated me at a Tyler Childers concert at the red rock amphitheater. She’s amazing.
This might be my record of the year for 2020. Instant classic.
She opened for Shakey Graves at a show in Philly last night, and blew me away. Her stand up comedy act was solid as well. Great sense of humor
That voice, the message.
This is way better than "Rich men North of Richmond"
Lol well ya
This song is the best! Better than space and time!
well this is a genre of music I didn't know I like, but apparently I really do
Amen. Good is good. Don't matter what the genre is. Check out Larkin Poe. 2 sisters from north Carolina. Straight up hillbilly blues. Incredible.
Love SGs style. Subscribed. 👍👍👍
@@madtownrick groovy 😊🤘
what genre would you call this?
@@Hope4MeAndYou I'd call it Americana. Wich is any and all roots music. Country, blues and rock and roll. It's kind of a catch all for anything you can play on a guitar. I've just discovered her personally today. I've listened to about 10 songs and I'm reminded of Joplin. Patsy Cline. Neil Young. Loretta Lynn. Willie Nelson. Muddy Waters. New Orleans. Appalachia. South west. Haight ashbury. She's an artist. Lot of people don't like the Americana name. Think it's lazy and not specific. I like it as a writer because it gives me more room to wander in. I'm not a writer for rolling stone or anything. Just an opinion. All my friends here in Nashville are musicians and writers. Some are hard core about being specific. I'm a little more layed back. Good is good. I'm not a rap fan but I love Tupac. 20 years ago My daughter said daddy just read the lyrics. Dude was a poet. This girl is an artist. No matter what you call it.
Hey! Thanks entire WellRed crew for having her on the show.
Oh, I love your voice. And the cadence with the message moves in and out of body at the same time, infinitely! Well done!
We are starting our poetry unit in my Introduction to Literature course next week. This will be a wonderful new addition to interpreting song lyrics as poetry. Such a beautiful voice and such a compelling message. Listen, agreeing to be featured on a national newscast takes serious courage-good on you. I hope more find their way to your music.
This is the perfect mix of amazing bass, guitar, and lyrics. This song is great on so many levels! I'll be listening to Ms. Goodman for years to come.
Just discovered this artist through an article in the New York times. she is Really Fantastic! going to have to get some of her CD's for sure! would love to see her live to. once this Covid goe saway. if it ever does!
How about go anyway? You gotta live life, man.
As a coal miner's son I say S.G is what we need more of these days...truth ! Hope they give you a chance,I'm sure they will when they see how well you connect...the music gets in the tiny crevices. This song has a North American Indian spirit. "I said Indian...respect",
This sounds like the intro of a new True Detective season. Goosebumps
She is so good at words . The female answer to Dillon .
“A tale as old as time, to turn the poor against the poor”
Didn’t even know who she was til they came into the restaurant where I work and were leaving and said they were musicians so I started googling had I known I woulda totally went to her show as well as paid for their food ❤
Instant love for this song - the beat is hypnotic 👍👍 We found this on Amazon music in a random line up of songs - everyone in the house stopped talking to listen properly and sway to the beat. ❤️❤️❤️
Underrated
I might stutter when i say maybe this person isnt just a gimmick
Had to come here after the Mountain Stage NPR.... I'm so happy to hear this. Lovely low down feel. Love it!

Shaina is a terrific talent! She delivers live as well!
