Yes to knit “house” dresses! They are my daily go-to if I’m going to just be at home. But, most of them look chic if styled up with accessories and nice shoes to go out for the day, too. I think these are the most versatile items in my wardrobe, they’re really comfy and easy-care, too. Nada, I like this “buy this, not that” format, and would love to see more videos like this.

Hi Nada. Thank you for this! I totally agree with you - I like JJill and Talbots, but not everything they have. I have a question though - I love florals, but am not sure what an updated, contemporary floral would be. I tend to go for neutrals and classic style. that is totally me.
You can't go wrong with neutrals and classic. I will say that with florals the higher end brands tend to do them best, unfortunately, but a black and white or navy and white floral is generally a safe bet. :) Thanks so much for the comment!
Also Soft Surroundings in addition to the brands you named. I stopped shopping at these mature brands, everything is too long and droopy, the prints and colors (other than neutrals and basics like navy and olive) are just “off”. That oversized, chunky, colorful jewelry is awful, too. That frump factor went away when I started shopping at H&M instead, recommended to me by my always-stylish Mom, but I’m 62! I always thought they had only trendy teen clothes, but they have many updated classics.
Hi, I'm a new subscriber and this was a great video. I have always been a shopper :-) I go to Chicos often and always wait for good sales. Their sales are better than Talbots sales. I've never really liked floral prints and have stayed away from them for years. I like solids and stripes. With that being said, I'm glad I'm doing the right thing. What do you think about capris?
Thank you for the comment Bonnie! I appreciate it! I love hearing from a fellow shopper. Chico's does have amazing sales! Capris were on my "don't" list for a long time but there are some really chic wider leg styles in stores right now. They are called crops. I really like those. The key with a capri is that it has to hit on exactly the right spot on your leg, or it makes you look shorter. I hope that helps! I should do a vide on this!
I love Eileen Fisher for it’s quality, but yes, the styles can be shapeless and frumpy. Also, black and dark colors predominate in this brand, but I don’t like or wear them and most of the necklines are too high. I am just super careful about the styles I pick from EF. I just ordered my dream hoodie, a true-white cropped one from this brand, in 100% organic cotton. I have been looking for one like this, a true white, not ivory, and no polyester, for years. I don’t wear hoodies much, so I wanted the perfect one for me. I can’t wait to get it!
If you ever get to the Chicago area, Eileen Fischer has an outlet store out near the airport in Schaumburg. There are other great outlets out there like Saks Off Fifth and Nordstrom Rack.
Everything you are pointing out as nonfrunpy will only emphasize a menopause body. What would you suggest for someone who is round in the middle and thighs. Thanks
I am also going through menopause and I totally get that not all of these are for every shape. Look for tops with some structure and weight. Nothing too flimsy to cling to the tummy. I love a good lightweight cami under tops for a little control. Tucking a little bit at the sides and leaving the front untucked in a convex shape can sometimes be flattering to a tummy area. For thighs, go for a straight leg pant or an A-line skirt in a nice substantial fabric. I hope that helps! I might do a separate video on this!
Three-quarter sleeves are always frumpy, it’s much more stylish to get long sleeves and push or roll them up, plus they can be worn in colder weather, too, unlike 3/4 length, in which my arms freeze in winter. And, the consistently dumpy length of all these tops; they end at the leg break or below, dividing the body into unflattering vertical halves. But, they have too much fabric to tuck in successfully, these brands never have tops that work for me. It’s much more youthful- and modern-looking to tuck tops in, or wear short ones that end above the hipbone (for me that often means buying “cropped” styles).
I thought Talbots was good for suiting. Cleo and Laura. They might be Canadian stores. Are there any “sets” that look contemporary?
Talbots does have good suiting! Yes I do think sets that are more relaxed looking a bit less tailored can look really contemporary. There are a lot of cute sets right now. It's really combining two contemporary pieces together that looks the most modern. :)
So helpful. Unfortunately I tried Amazon Personal Shopper, and bought a blue and beige floral top. Bad choice, I think. Yikes.
