Today, we explore 10 Unexpected Glitches in Speedrunning. In this video, the speedrunners came across various glitches that they had never seen before. These glitches can range from odd textures appearing on screen, to unexpected deaths. Sometimes unexpected glitches can actually save during a speedrun, but that will be covered by EZScape in a future Top 10 Accidental Skip Discoveries video. :)

It pains me to see a runner a couple hours in and a glitch fails them.
Call me crazy, but I think most runners enjoy it. Probably different if they are on PB pace, but it gives them a highlight. Definitely not the worst way a run can end.

I actually have personal experience with this. I was 10 seconds in my American Dad speedrun on GameCube and I failed the newspaper skip glitch and ended up under the map. I had to restart completely and lost all that time for nothing. Needless to say I quit speed running for good after that!

I remember playing lego Indiana Jones as a kid, and I was just wandering around the halls of the hub world and out of no where I get over a million coins. No clue what happened but I could buy anything in the game after that
Yeah that actually happened to me when I was speedrunning the game.
I wonder if you accidentally entered a cheat code? That happens in GTA sometimes, since some of the cheats are really simple and it doesn't care how slowly you enter them.

can confirm, if you hold the button down and release it somewhere else it doesn't click. If you have the button held down and release on the like it won't work either.

*Unexpected glitch you forgot: In the game called American Dad, a speed runner (who’s identity I cannot find anywhere) encountered a glitch that ruined his whole run. Pretty much, he couldn’t get out of bed and was stuck on that part of the intro for awhile before he had to eventually restart the game and ruining his run.*
There should be a speed running rule where if you encounter a run-ruining bug and have to go a bit back in progress, you have the right to rewind the stopwatch back to the time when you first arrived at that previous part
Example: you are playing a game and at the start of lvl 4, the time was at 30.5 minutes, then at 33.5 minutes a glitch happened and you had to restart the game and go back to the start of lvl 4,then you have the right to return the time to 30.5 minutes
@@mitth_raw_nuruodo that would be instantly abused to cheat, spliced runs aren't allowed generally. Perhaps in a segmented category.

Or just that brain dead lol it would basically turn everything into a segmented TAS, "I did the hard part now i gotta do another hard part, but if i do the first hard part perfect i can die, get to the second hard part and try again until i do that part perfect..."over and over, doing every segment optimally. Long story short, it turns into a TAS the tool assistant being the video you keep pausing, rewinding and recording until you get it perfect....that aint a speedrun. That a ridiculously slow, snail-pace muck run.

Explanation for his death:
The last snake block's hitbox must have smushed him, by having his hitbox between both the game must have thought he was crushed between two walls and therefore died.
That's what I thought. The blocks were moving and the game thought he was getting smushed even though he wasn't

I actually saw the glitch for Links Awakening 2019 on the stream when it happened. Chat went wild.
The snake blocks is pretty easy to understand. His small size made the game assume he was trapped between blocks, therefore crushed.
I've had that happen to me before and it's been known to be a thing for a while (like over a decade at least). Either that clip is really old or some people who didn't know.

I played this game pretty damn hardcore and tried the exact same recovery method this runner used however I died the exact same way.
I put it down to the Snake Blocks squashing you between each other as they changed direction, which would make it a pixel "perfect" death.

I got the tick-toc clock upwards glitch while playing SM64 multiplayer with a friend a few years ago, he was streaming to twitch we where doing all stars run. we had no idea what had happened. We thought it was a glitch in the multiplayer mod.

The jak dark glitch happened to me when I was a kid and scared the shit out of me. It happened in the very first town. What’s interesting is that looking through the goggles fixed it.

I actually remember a glitch my older brother experienced when playing Ocarina of Time on the GameCube, when I was in like preschool, and when he slashed a pot in the Water Temple, the game glitched out and basically crashed, showing the save icon glitching on the screen, while the room he was in was still showing, instead of a black void. We called it “The Pot of Death”. Don’t know if anyone else found it or not.

3:15 I've been killed very similarly by "snake blocks" in Sonic 2 when they normally are only capable of causing damage when impacting Sonic against the wall in Chemical Plant Zone. Only happened once and this was probably back in 1998ish. I never forgot.
Happens to me, too! It's actually intentional, if I'm correct. You just get crushed in between the blocks.
I haven't watched this channel in a few weeks and it makes me uncomfortable just how similar EZScape and Bescape sound

The SMB3 Glitch hapoened because the spiny lakitu threw was, for some reaskn, thought to be a koopa shell, and koopa shells trigger the end of a level
The Halo CE clip isnt even a glitch - that's just how the physics engine works in CE - if any vehicle is moving *at all* it's liable to to kill you.

If I had to take a guess as to why the Critical Wiggle is intentional, perhaps the devs had wanted to somewhat implement the disorientation one would likely feel when near death?

I've had that death that pidgy had happen to me a couple of times, so its definitely NOT the first time its ever happened, nor is my own cases the first most likely. It happens cause the block thats the tail disapears and immidiatly gets replaced with the new tail and if your on it at the exact moment its as if you were in the level geomety and get "squished".

I think the Lakitu threw a spike into the box that ends the level and because the spike counts as an entity, it ended the level for Mario.

*Possible explanation for snake blocks at **3:16* When sliding down the player model reached the "seam" of the lowest previously unmoving block (block A) exactly at the frame that the "folding in" block coming from the right (block B) reached the edge of where block A just then started to move, while the player was still holding "right" in order to keep sliding. The death may have resulted from this constellation:
The first block moves up one pixel, while the hitbox of block B is still one line of pixels away from its final position, resulting in a 1 pixel gap on the bottom left of the intersection of block A and B into which the top-right corner of the player's hitbox moves due to "right" being pressed. On the beginning of the next frame block B moves 1 pixel to the left before gravity is able to move the player 1 pixel down so the hitboxes of block B and the player intersect, which results in this rare death.

For the Snake Block glitch it's more likely something glitchy happened with collision that crushed Luigi. Maybe something similar to the way the moving blocks in Chemical Plant Zone sometimes kill Sonic when he hugs a wall in Sonic 2?

Let me tell y’all an unexplainable glitch that occurred in Paper Mario: Sticker Star. My older sister was playing Sticker Star, and in a desert level(I don’t know which one),and when she went inside a place with many rooms, she did a frame perfect jump by jumping right below a romp block, and falling right when the romp extended. Mario then landed a little off the edge of the platform. He suddenly fell through the ground as the camera closed up on him, and he fell into an endless pit. Some stacked pink and green squares appeared to the left of the screen. After that, the glitch became an instant game over. It never happened again, no matter the circumstance.

I am an old guy watching an old video, but just FYI.... that nonsense with the automatic brick track killing Mario is also a glitch in the SNES SMW. I got it as a child in castle 5 and screamed so loud I got sent to my room. Never saw it again.

I had that mario glitch happen to me twice as a kid, at least now i can show my buddy so i dont get called a liar, but I think 3 things are required based off what I can remember, speed, no damage, and stage clipping, I was running faster than normal runs, i took no damage the whole level and jump cliped through the bottoms of platforms while killing enemy's, I think it's the mix of all 3 of these which over loads the cartridge an glitches the end curtain. But this just a theory based off what I can remember hopefully it helps someone.
I am 99% certain I had the glitch occur to me when I was a child as well. As that was more than 30 years ago, the details are fuzzy to me as to what lead to it. I only remember it being really weird, how I couldn't jump at the end.

There's a few things in Mario kart 7 that could fit here. There's an unexplained run where the lap didn't count, and countless occasions where the character is randomly counted out of bounds
