    A quick interim THANK YOU for the response to the battery fund. Enormously kind. Alan shrugged when I told him.

    Make a mug or shirt with the marmot Alan on it and the text "Alan!!" Underneath (in orange off course) and I'll buy it.
    This grumpy old sailor wishes you all the best.

    My favourite part of the week is when a new chisel featuring Alan the soon to be Pillar Exploration vessel appears. I feel that Askam had transcended all boys fellow life boats by bravely stepping up and volunteering for this adventure. He couldn't be in more careful or considered hands then yours Alex. Bravo.

    To all those suggesting Lithium batteries, they're not so good in the cold. Charging below 0c will damage them. If only the arctic were warmer. Good old lead acid (in all it's various forms) is about as robust as you can get. - Keep up the good work Alex, I've been an avid viewer since day 1.

      Thank you for that important tidbit of info. I am sure there are quite a few wondering this same thing about the LiFePo4s.

      Thanks for that input. Indeed, cold charging lithium can knacker batteries, although charging most batteries below freezing isn't ideal.

      @xnademolicious 7 місяців тому +1

      The only positive thing about lead acid is that it's the most tolerant of short term neglect (even though it destroys them very quickly). It's otherwise just hot garbage. Emergency communication can be powered by primary batteries, and you can have one lead acid dedicated as a starter. Hotel loads should be lithium with low temp charging protection and internal heaters.

    Printed t shirts must always be available in black.
    Have I bought one? No.
    I'd like one eventually.
    Nevertheless I feel very strongly for black t shirts. And any rockers, rollers, or backstage controllers would agree.
    Love this friggin channel so much.

    Have you reached out to Anker or EcoFlow to see if they would sponsor you with a battery? They both have whole home capacity in one battery with inverters and solar inverters included. Thanks again for your time and effort in showing us this greatly fun content!

      I don't think power stations are a great fit for Alan. The Leoch 210Ah batteries were actually sponsored by Leoch UK in 2020, but I'm now short as I had to hand some over to my former team-mates.

    Sorry, but I don't understand how adding ballast weights above the waterline is going to reduce the rolling moment. More holes through the hull too. Anyway, good luck with it.

    • @PsRohrbaugh
      @PsRohrbaugh 7 місяців тому +5

      @@AlexHibbertOriginals I know there are fitment concerns but electrically I still think the best bet is a 12v alternator for the engine system, and a separate 24v alternator for the house loads. A bidirectional DC charger for emergencies only. But you know you have your engine electrical system isolated no matter what happens on the house side.

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals
      @AlexHibbertOriginals  7 місяців тому +2

      Good advice indeed. I've sketched out a load of ways to attach a second alternator, but the physical install is still a free space nightmare. It's not impossible, but not a rebuild I can do right now.
      I've considered swapping the starter and alternator for 24V so there's no 12V at all, but again that's a major re-jig for a system that functions ok at the mo. And it's hard to find 24V modules at the right spec for the Bukh (tooth size etc).

    • @AlexHibbertOriginals

      I had a long think about that. But the upper shell isn't that thick, and it would mean removing a whole section of the inner shell, mining out the foam, and then adding the mechnical fixings. I also don't want the shell being compromised in the event of an impact.

  • @brucechapman1946

      And, as I have just learned from reading the comments, will say one word back to you. No good in the cold. Ok, that was 5 words, apparently they are not suitable in high latitude conditions due to the cold. Lead acid of various types are suitable. I went and double checked… “Cold weather increases the internal resistance of lithium batteries. Higher resistance means the battery has to work harder to provide the same amount of power, which can lead to reduced output and efficiency. This increased resistance also makes the battery less responsive to charging, as the charge acceptance also decreases in colder temperatures.”

As a battery technology, in very high latitude temperatures, they are compromised too much … “Cold weather increases the internal resistance of lithium batteries. @@teeanahera8949 This! Teslas actually have heaters in their battery packs, because they can suffer permanent damage if used in too cold of weather. Alex has done a lot of research on battery tech for cold weather.
