Joe Barden (JBE) Modern Telecaster Pickups vs Fender Custom Josephina's in a Masterbuilt Thinline

  • (Also see addendum below) In a Thinline Tele, the Fender Custom Shop (hand wound by Jospehina) pickups sounded too thin an airy and just didn't cut through the band mix at all. So we compered them to and installed a set of Joe Barden Modern Telecaster pickups with a hot bridge. Punchy, midrange and hotter output tells the story. It's not that the Josephina's were bad, but they just weren't making it live or in studio. The JBEs do! Please check out this video whether you are simply a gear head or considering new pickups! Thanks for listening and God bless you!
Addendum: Two things: The neck position on the 4-way switch has the pickups in series, not parallel. Second, in the video, the bridge pickup sounds a tad flat and midrangy. All I did is back it away from the strings by 1/64 and it regained some Tele twang and brightened up a bit. Much better. I'm even more pleased!

Its so nice to see/hear someone do a demo "normal' video with just simple chords at first with a/b between the 2 different pickups. way better than someone actually trying to show how many notes they can play in 2-3 seconds. excellent demo video . thanks so much

THANK YOU so much for demonstrating the tone right out of the gate with strummed chords. I hate when the "lightning boys" do a demo and play so fast that I really can't get a feel for what I'm hearing. I love the JBE. Thanks again.

Really nice comparison! Where the text says “parallel” for the pickup/switch position, I believe you mean ‘series’. A standard Tele 3-way switch is parallel in the middle setting, and the 4-way switch adds a series config. Thanks for the great video!

Thank you for the informative comparison. In other videos I liked the Danny Gatton JB pickups which preserve the Tele character. I like the standard Telecaster bridge. It's very clear. The Barden neck could be awesome with a stock Bridge pickup. The stock Bridge would even them out. And if you want alot of gain you could flip to the neck pickup or both to cancel hum and get extra low end. I love soloing on a neck pickup with a bunch of gain. Or use the neck for rhythm with gain and add the bridge for solos when feedback dosnt get in the way as much. More low end and no hum neck with a standard Telecaster bridge could be an awesome combo. Especially using that neck pickup for jazz

Once you see a Telecaster Fender guitar, your imagination should hear a sound of its unique sound that been playing more than half of century. Thicker sound doesn't mean we can have a better sound.
