Depending on where you live, if there is an indeprndently owned bookstore check with them before you order from Amazon or Barnes and Noble
Every indeprnt bookstore ive been to will special order books if they dont have
They also support the local economy

I highly recommend Secondhand by Adam Minter. As someone who has been on my zero waste journey for about 7 years now, I will always recommend shopping secondhand first when you are looking for something. However, this book opened my eyes to the fact that the secondhand market is extremely flawed from the environmental racism that occurs to the fact that so much of what we donate ends up in a landfill. He showed through real-life examples and data how most of what we donate ends up being pushed to the Global South, Africa in particular, and sellers there either try to sell it in their local markets or it ends up in a landfill there. Unfortunately, there is so much that they end up not being able to sell so it ends up polluting their environment. Essential book for anyone beginning their zero waste journey, and yes, it absolutely needs to be intersectional! This book does a great job of showing that intersectionality in my opinion. This is why I'm trying to be more intentional with what I bring into my home and to use my local Buy Nothing group when I am decluttering.

I had this video in one tab and my Libby app in the other so I could tag all of these books! I have probably recommended it here before because I do so every chance I get, but Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer changed my life.

Thankyou so much for putting this together, I’ve been really hoping for some of your book opinions and recommendations. I’ve been looking for more environmental non fiction that isn’t catered to beginners and I really appreciate you added that element in to your explanations. :)

The book that really woke me up from being a casual environmentalist to taking action was The Uninhabitable Earth by David Wallace-Wells. It takes a hard, long look at what we’re in for if we do nothing and it was such a good wake up call, I read it twice back to back. I’ve also really recommend This Changes Everything by Naomi Klein, I’m reading it right now and really enjoying it. And finally, I’m going to probably be the thousandth person to say this, but read Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Absolutely necessary reading, especially for US-based environmentalists

I encourage your viewers to keep a reading journal 📓 of the books they are reading this year so you can make recommendations to your local library on next year’s Citywide Reads. They make lots of copies available for checkout so there are enough readers to get together to discuss, or have author events. I think 3 of nearby counties had a section of the Countywide Reads on environmental issues. Pro Tip: ask your library to sponsor a section next year on environmental issues or zero waste!
PS: comment on the beginners books, one reason to read a book about info if you already know the info is so you can make a recommendation about which good books are at your library.

I haven't read it but Silent Spring by Rachel Carson pops up in science textbooks so I want to read it. Between thrift stores, garage sales, Half-Price Books, etc, I will never buy a book full price again. This summer if anyone is in Minnesota, there is a HUGE book sale called the Book'em Book Sale. The past few years it was in an old Toys R Us building, so you can imagine how big that is without the shelving units

@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist I have so many. I've been putting out a recommendations list on my personal blog for the past three years if you'd like to see a complete list. My favorites would have to be Zero Waste Kids by Rob Greenfield, Gardening Lab for Kids by Renata Brown, and 101 Ways to be an Eco Hero by Kait Eaton.

@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist I hope you enjoy it. It isn't non-fiction though, and it may be very different from a lot other other books you've read. The best I can describe it is as surrealist poetry reflecting on the entanglement of climate, colonialism, and capitalism. It's written by a Nigerian artist.
