Yes, depending on material and heat required there are other methods such as investment casting. There is also injection molding and forming processes.
Sorry for the slow answer, just back from holidays. We are using silica sand by SIL Industrial Minerals. It is water based and there is very little smoke making it a lot nicer than the oil mixes.
Sorry for the slow reply, I'm currently on holidays. I have forwarded an e-mail about your request. If I don't get a reply I'll check the shop when I'm back in two weeks. Thanks for your post.
Thanks for the video - much appreciated. Also the two on the vernier protractor and sin bar were excellent. Have had a vernier for a couple of years but was not using it to it's fullest capabilities until your video. Two questions: 1) how do you keep your shop so clean??? 2) when's the next video coming. Hi Rod from BC, Brad from Calgary! The shop is a school. Yes I need a new video, it is always about time. Any suggestions? Glad the videos were helpful, always appreciate the feedback.
machiningmoments Hi Brad from Calgary, Rod who grew up in Edmonton brrrrrrr. Have a great idea for a project which the students could use. Send me the schools mailing address and I will put the magazine with the article in it and send to you. Rod from Vancouver Island
realy impressive sir thanks for the video I've a question can you tell me on first step you hold the shape of the sand how does you do that like which ingredients you mixed with sand on first step
Awesome! Can you use this method to make fairly thin objects like 1.5-2mm or does it have to be done by pressure casting and with steel or whatever solid molds?
i'd like to ask if it is possible to make a re-entrant angled product using this process, sand casting? and also if it is possible to make a re-entrant angled product using a die casting process such as pressure die casting?
Hi Wildbill sorry for the slow reply, I'm currently on holidays. It is a silica sand that is water based rather than oil which is wonderful with the smoke. If you would like to know the brand name I'll be happy to get it for you when I get back. Thanks for your message.
This video does a good job explaining the fine details of this process and it makes it easy to understand. Good job and thanks
Glad it was helpful, I always appreciate the comments! Thank you

Excellent video, show how to do sand casting parts. Great Job.
Thank you
My pleasure, hope it helped. Thanks for your post.

Thanks for the vid! Now i think i know what the textbooks means when they say sand casting gives a poor surface finish.
Glad it was useful, thanks for leaving a note!
What kind of shop are you guys running? Are you narrarating for some students too? Very interesting!
thank you so much!
Its very useful to do my coursework.
Glad it helped!

Hi Rod, just received the magazine. Thank you!
very helpful video
Glad it helped, that's for stopping by!
excellent video mate !!! would like if u would do turning on a lathe!!! would be very important for me!! ITZ a request!!
Soham De What exactly would you like to see?
a video on machining & turning on lathes ( not cnc) , i mean a tutorial on machining a part (JOB) with calculations!!! Needed for Study !! Boss!!!
is there an alternative to this? other methods that can be used instead of sand or die casting?
realy impressive sir thanks for the video I've a question can you tell me on first step you hold the shape of the sand how does you do that like which ingredients you mixed with sand on first step
There are different recipes some have clay (bentonite), water mixed in with the sand.
Awesome! Can you use this method to make fairly thin objects like 1.5-2mm or does it have to be done by pressure casting and with steel or whatever solid molds?
Yes, typically thin material is pressed/formed.
i'd like to ask if it is possible to make a re-entrant angled product using this process, sand casting? and also if it is possible to make a re-entrant angled product using a die casting process such as pressure die casting?
I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "re-entrant angle".
anyone can tell me what can be used to create the cavity in the mould? not the plate not the metal
Casting sand is used. It is basically silica sand, bentonite, and clay binders.
thanks a lot..........

How is improve the sand casting surface finishing for aluminum casting...
Using a finer sand will improve the finish or machining after.
And pouring at the correct temperature. Pouring too hot results in a pebbly surface.
Can you cast a part with internal threads?
It could be done using a core.
Thanks, i have a test where i'm supposed to know this :P
Hope it helps!
what is used to create cavity in the mould? Need some help
刘源 ensc3002? "pattern" is the answer
Yes, thanks for your help, and I am from ENSC 3002 as well.
What would you like to know?
melting pot
pot
vat

I'm glad it was helpful, thanks for posting.
so what kind of sand is that?
thank you!!!
