If you'd rather watch the full-movie with me instead of the Cliff-Notes Version, you can do it here: player.odycdn.com/api/v4/streams/free/Soldier-of-Orange-(Full-Movie)/e05facb00f83be6daa32b43e3a3d558c8b6741e0/6025f2
I've seen the movie twice, this is the real history of our Country.
If you liked doing things this way, there are 2 other Dutch history movies that you should check out, and react to in this same way as well.
The "Michiel De Ruyter" movie, and "Oorlogswinter" (Which is about the Dutch resistance during the hunger winter of 1944)
@@jonastona Highly will not react to the farmers protests, riots etc. #TeamHighly
Hey Paul, don't forget you are the German for the native Americans 🤔
@@jonastona Recently we have been seeing requests for videos for example footage of MH17/Accidents/Funerals/Terrorist Attacks/Riots/Instigation to violence/protests/political things etc Highly will not be reacting to these videos. So please keep this in mind, Thank You. Suzette #TeamHighly
One of the best Dutch movies ever made. Even hearing the intro music gives me chills.
The best of the best. It’s comparable to the best hollywood movies.
My granddad avoided the first round of forced labour by changing his birthyear on his passport. The second round he was put on a train and managed to jump off with a friend in rural germanu. The german famer let them work on his farm in secret and they survived. Not all germans were bad. I bet most of them didn't want any of this to happen.
Much later, after he died of old age, we found out that he worked in resistance the years before he was sent off. He just never had the nerve to tell anyone cause my grandma would have killed him for taking the risk:)
To all the anonymous heroes!
Some trivia about the movie:
It's a true story, and the real guy co-directed the movie. He died in 2007.
The movie was directed by Paul Verhoeven, the same guy who directed movies like RoboCop and Basic Instinct. His most famous Dutch movie is _Turks Fruit,_ which is the most successful Dutch movie to this day, a record that has stood for nearly 50 years.
The Dutch age rating for this movie is 12+. I don't think it would still get that rating today.
Although romanticized, the film is based on the life of:
Siebren Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema (Surabaja, Java, April 3, 1917 - Ahualoa, Hawaii, September 26, 2007);
also known by his nickname Soldier of Orange, was a Dutch resistance fighter, war pilot, radio operator and writer.
Reserve-Captain-Pilot
Later Adjutant to Queen Wilhelmina.😉
he was later herald of arms at the coronation of Beatrix
Soldier of orange was a real person . The story was real. The Person who was the soldier of orange became a good friend of the royal family.
About 6 years ago they dug up a bunker here at the end of the boulevard near the dunes where I live and were highly surprised it was the bunker where Eric (Soldier of Orange) had spent a lot of time. I climbed down into the bunker (it was only for 2 hours accessible for visitors) and took a lot of photos. Nobody could tell me at that time what exactly the Soldier of Orange was doing there? A mission for spying on the Germans, or hiding from them? I should've checked out more about it afterwards. Saw the movie 3 times, btw.
Ofcourse they liked him. His heroe-stories became a part of them.
The Royals were save in Canada and the Queen and her GERMAN son in law were in London. "Be strong" she said over the radio. Just as strong as she and her family were? Yes I know her son in law was a pilot and worked with the allies. If he had time because he shared the bed with the daughter from the man who discovered Zyklon B. A new gas to kill Jews more quickly and the most important thing: faster. Not out of empathy, no because the old gas didn't kill the Jews quick enough. It had to kill them all and some baby's, imagine that, baby's were still alive after 10 minutes in the gas-chamber so they had to shoot them, through the head. And that was a waste of bullets.
Oh yes he was very real, after the war he went to the states
Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema
15:05 Everybody thinks they would be in the resistance but in reality you will never know on which side you will be. It is easy to say, not easy to do. Especially when you have children and being in the resistance would be a big threat to their lives.
Very true. The people joining the Dutch SS were often very anti communist. The enemy of my enemy is my friend etc. So for them the Germans were winners of the war and fighting the communist Russians and therefor the side they choose.
Its such a great movie ,and a lot of the cast members had a career in usa, rutger houwer, jeroen krabbe, derek de lint. The part that i never get out of my head afain was the scene about the torture and that screaming, and realizing this is just 1% of the real deal back then
the part where he signs up as sailor to escape to England when the German Officer want to check all members of the crew which just rolled out of the local bar, driving the German officer crazy always cracks me up
Respect for watching the subtitled version instead of the dubbed version!
edit: *about that rebuilding the country...*
Following the end of World War 2, the former Dutch East Indies declared their independence from The Netherlands.
So, just liberated from foreign occupation, we built up a force of 100,000 men and sent it to 'restore order' in 'our colony.'
In brief, it was a small Vietnam War without the massive air support.
Perhaps you might like to see the film 'Oerog,' based on the novel by the late, great Hella S. Haasse.
The 'assassin stalking' scene was undoubtedly shot in the courtyard of the Tower of London.
When I was there, I noticed that the courtyard next to the Norman-built castle, was kept in Victorian London style.
So instead of blocking of an entire street in the middle of London, they went for this location instead.
I haven't looked it up but as I said, when I was in London in 1986, I noticed how the courtyard before entering the castle looks very similar to the scene in this movie. And if you look more closely, you'll see it's a courtyard too, though not in medieval style like the castle but in early 20th century style.
did you know the name "jerrycan" came from the war it means: moffen blik or in english nazi can, this was a german invention. and the english/scottisch army called the germans jerrys. that's why they called it jerrycan
the siren you hear can still be heard on every first Monday of the month they test in the Netherlands at 12:00 am throughout the country
When my grandmother died last year, in the service it was mentioned that her husband and my grandfather that died in 1989 was at risk if being sent to work camps in Germany in the war. Due to the resistance he hid and so escaped to be send there and there was a change he would not come back. Almost no one of the family knew that including me. I can't imagine how it was to go through that but i am SOOOOO greatful of the resistance for hiding him.
Thumbs up right away. You committing to this is amazing. As said before, visit The Hague. Many of the filming locations are in The Hague and much still stands unchanged today
Thank you for this overview! Big Compliments for Vincent, Nice edited!
The Dutch Queen Wilhelmina became a kind of symbol for the occupied people in Holland. Even though she had fled to England but from there she held radio speeches which could be illegally listened to in Holland which was ver much appreciated. My grandfather went to England just before the occupation as part of a government plan to integrate Dutch merchant ships and their personal into the English army. My grandfather carried many soldiers and ammunition across the Atlantic while my grandmother with two kids stayed behind in occupied Holland. My grandmother too held the house of Orange in very high esteem. I sometimes wonder why but anyway that’s how it was like.
Wilhelmina's son-in-law was Prince Bernhard, the ex-SS man who later founded the Bilderberg Conference.😂
Great reaction....and Vincent thanks for editing the video 💥💥
This is the first time that i have seen this movie(soldaat van oranje) on this way i grew up like the soldier of Orange is almost holy I mean here in Holland we got a musical about it thanks for put it on line
Greetings from a free kingdom of the Netherlands(Holland)
I’m looking forward to see the full movie! This was too short! Even though I saw the movie several times, your reaction will give me a new perspective. Thanks Vincent for editing this teaser!
There were basically three groups: 1) the resistance 2) survivors, trying to get by 3) The collaborateurs.
Group 2 was the largest group. Families trying to stay alive. Feeding their children. Standing in line for food Avoiding German raids etc. Sometimes to scared for their families to enter the resistance. But sometimes also doing things like warning a Jewish family about an upcoming raid.
And then there was group 3. They were helping the Germans, ratting out the man of a family who was hiding to prevent being sent to a German war factory for forced labor, spying for the Germans. Sometimes a person would do this to protect their children.
Thanks for the extra info.
Being in the resistance came with extreme risks. If you were caught by the Germans then you would most likely be tortured for information and then you would be executed by firing squad and youre friends and family often aswell. Even if you're really careful you would not be safe. The resistance was operating in a network with a lot of branches. If someone in your branche or one close to you was caught. Then they were probably forced to work as a spy for the Germans. In most cases when you find out someone is a spy it is already too late. I think I would most likely be survivor, cause I wouldn't risk lives of my loved ones. But luckily I'm not in that situation at the moment and hope I will never be.
Lots more had to actively keep secrets and support the people who had people in hiding. Often whole villages were in on it and needed to be.
You forget about the groups who were unwillingly persecuted by the Germans like Jews and Gypsies. Not drawing attention to yourself was no option for them. The Germans set a whole system to work to slowly isolate them from the general population and then moved them out of the country to ‘work’ in Poland.
@@harmoholland7845 Some jews resisted, most tried not to draw attention to themselves and stay alive, but simply showed up for transport when they recieved the letter. Some tried to get delays, some went into hiding. In that respect they weren't very different from the other Dutch.
Basically during the German occupation only four or five percent of the population joined the resistance and also four or five percent of the population collaborated with the Germans. Most people tried to get on with their live although things were getting more and more difficult. Especially people who had the responsibility for children and family, for them it was not so easy to take risks. In Bloemendaal a coastal town were there is a honorary cemetery for members of the resistance, you immediately notice how young all these people were who died.
Never would have thought to see you react to my 2nd cousin's story, can't complain 🙏 The spirit to fight injustice still runs strong in our family 😁
There is a musical made from the book/movie, seen it many times, it's nothing like you've ever seen before. Stage is revolving around the scenes, including a beach and an airstrip! Intense, pure, raw. Set on a former military airfield. When ever you visit NL, this is a must go to (as a veteran). You're invited, happy to take you there as our guest.
Maybe you know Rutger Hauer (erik lanshof in the movie ).This Dutch actor was also actor in America. He was in the movie Blind Fury and Blade Runner
and "And Jeroen Krabbé was in "The living daylights" and "The fugitive"
And of course Paul verhoeven directed this(Robocop,Basic Instinct, Total Recal, Starship Troopers)
@@StevenQ74 Jeroen Krabbé also got robbed in Oceans 12, and his (real life) son (Martijn Krabbé) has a career in Dutch television, as presenter of the show (Voice of Holland etc) usually together with a female presenter -he shows he cares about the guests and loves doing this work, sometimes being more enthusiastic than participants/guests
@HXC!,their is now also an Musical Made of this true heroic story‘
one of the best dutch movie .
spetters is also a realy great movie .
Hazelhoff Roelfzema emigrated to the United States, where he obtained American nationality. From 1945 to 1965, he was married to Margaret "Midge" Cooper. From this first marriage his son was born, Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema jr.
In 1968 [source?] he married the interior designer Karin Steensma. He lived with her in Ahualoa near Honokaa, on the island of Hawaii. In 2006 he underwent heart surgery.[21] He died at home at the age of ninety. Some of his ashes have been transferred to the monument 'Voor hen dievallen', on the Schouwweg in Wassenaar, where these ashes are buried near an oak tree, located behind the monument with a grey-black tombstone with the inscription 'Vrij Onververd'.[
Interesting detail, I've got a simalair story from Norway, about a man called Max Manus, allso a tru story. Greetings from Rotterdam 👍
Haven't seen this film in decades, Rogier van Otterloo composed one of the best soundtracks ever. I've got "kippenvel" (literary chicken skin, in English: goose bumps).
Nice you are doing movies now too? :) maybe the movie michiel de ruyter (i think the english name is admiral) is something for you to react to.
Paul Verhoeven.Made big movies .in the usa ..
there´s also a musical based on this one playing near Leiden (Netherlands) Nice songs and really nice to see with moving stage
Yes...I've done another reaction about the musical like 2 days ago! Go check it out 🤗
Rutger Hauer AND Jeroen Krabbé directed by Paul Verhoeven.
Both had a good carrière in Hollywood
I thought it was an interesting war film, perhaps Paul Verhoeven's best film after "Black Book" (2006).
When the resistance killed an important German, a group of innocent people was executed.
Its a amazing mucical,I watch it 3 times
Time for more Dutch movies like "Turks Fruit" en "Schatjes"? ;)
Yes! Turks fruit!!
Turks fruit is a must see
I don't think that Turks Fruit is something he can safely react to "for a youtube channel".
Since about 80% of that movie crosses the youtube guidelines about nudity...
@@OfficialBassMarine he can with edits and some blurring 🤣
You not recognize the actor? Its young Rutger Houwer. He played many usa movies
The Netherlands were more or less overrun by the Germans. We were invaded by the German army and the Dutch army wasn’t strong enough to resist. Furthermore people kind of gave up, particularly when the Queen together with her family and the complete Dutch government all fled to England within a few days. Then when Rotterdam was bombed and flattened like you see in Ukraine today and the Germans threatened to do the same to other major cities like Amsterdam, then the Dutch army or at least what was left of it surrendered.
It’s a classic movie! Can you please react to the soldier of orange musical performance at the dutch musical awards?? Love your reactions btw!
You need to react to the new Defqon.1 Closing Ritual!!🤩 ITS INSANE
Sometimes I wonder: If there would be another war here, would I join the resistance? It's hard to think about that, because of the way the Germans punished. If they catched one woman or man from the resistance, they would shoot
10 "innocent" men for what the "resistance (wo) man" had done.
Then I look at my hand, at my ring.
The inscription says: Jo 14-10-1939.
My grandmothers engagementring. They married in 1942 because of the war.
Both of my grandfathers were in the resistance. And so automatically my grandmothers were too.
The ring. Ofcourse I would go in the resistance.
But the offer for the innocent people is like a worm in my brain.
@14:48 Self-preservation?
Great movie and story! As a sidenote: Since 2010 there also is a recordbreaking musical running of that same story/movie. It is played in a unique theatre (old hangar) where the audience revolves to each scene in a round theatre. The show includes real water/sea where actors even paddle a boat and actualy swim and a real Dacota airplane rols into the set! Maybe also nice to do a reaction on: ua-cam.com/video/bwyBvjtSyq4/v-deo.html
Dear Bafplus, Have already reacted to 2 videos about the musical, but thanks for the extra info. Here's the link ua-cam.com/video/qbuiH_kjN0k/v-deo.html enjoy
This movie is a real classic. Seen many times with a good story. Whit a better top actors of our country. Rutger Hauer, Jeroen Krabbe, Derek de Lint and many more
If you're into other Dutch World War II movies, I would like to recommend the following movies (with links to the English subtitled movie trailers):
